My first book of fiction
Over the pandemic year I have been working on a collection of 16 short stories. My first book of fiction. It was a challenge and I am very happy with the results. I even surprised Mary who has now written 4 novels. The book was designed and produced in Designer Pro+ and is now available on Amazon. 16 stories, 171 pages.

I think that cover illustration is great Gary. Well done!

Re: My first book of fiction
nerver seen this kind of dial before.
great!
would like to see it on my watch ;-)

Re: My first book of fiction
I can only take credit for finding the cover photo. It was a lucky find on Shutterstock. I was looking for bracket clock photos and came across this distorted dial photo which works perfectly with the title story.

Re: My first book of fiction
:-bd well done
do we lucky TGers get a discount ;)

Re: My first book of fiction
Amazon always discounts books. :) I'll sign it for you next time you're in Albuquerque. How's that?
-
Re: My first book of fiction
a kind offer, but the likelyhood of me ever visiting the US again is remote, although I have been to albuquerque in the past [as you may remember me mentioning] but I think before you moved off the west coast :D

Re: My first book of fiction
Love the cover design GP.

Re: My first book of fiction
Congratulations, Gary! Big achievement. Did you also involve an editor?
Nice cover too!

Absolutely. I had the right number of commas, it's just they were all in the wrong places. :O My wife who has now written 5 books (all that I have art directed and produced) also helped with the editing and made several suggestions that really helped.

Re: My first book of fiction
$15 does not seem a bad price, although $7.24 to post over this side of the pond ;)
I have the right letters but not always in the right order; hey eric, one of a kind

All the best with the book, Gary.

Editing is also a craft and sometimes even an art.

Re: My first book of fiction
Maybe the sequel will be "50 vector shades of Gary"..

Re: My first book of fiction
I have to admit, it's been a few years since I read a book for pleasure. Not for want of desire, but for lack of time.
I'm living permanently outside of the US, so Amazon's offerings are different here. Do you plan to offer your opus as an on-line book in the future? Some of the descriptions are very intriguing.
Congratulations and best of luck.

Re: My first book of fiction
Excellent well done. Perhaps the first of many!
A non-fiction idea could be a collection of your tutorials, “The Joy of X”. ;)

That's the saddest thing.

That's a poor excuse. My wife has a very busy life and still manages to read several fiction books every week.
Books are so important.

Re: My first book of fiction
gcellison - The book should have international distribution as it is a print on demand book. If you can access Amazon then you should be able to purchase the book.
About 35 years ago, Mary and I started listening to Books on Tape while we drove in and out of the city to work. Then when we started to work from home I started reading a loud, Fiction in the morning and non-fiction at night. I'm not a great reader but being mildly dyslexic, my mind tends to wander and if I read a loud I am forced to concentrate on the words on the page. So it's 45 minutes to an hour of fiction with our coffee in the morning and 45-60 minutes of non-fiction with a glass of wine before dinner. We have managed to read a ton of books this way, plus Mary always has several books going at once.

Re: My first book of fiction
The little flourish under the chapter title is a spiral with a line attached to each end. It ties into the twister photo on the cover.

Re: My first book of fiction
Congratulations Gary! Stay cool in this heat dome we’re under. Hot on the Saskatchewan prairies as well.

Re: My first book of fiction
Thanks Bill. Actually our heat wave ended when the west coast started to heat up. It's only 66F here at the moment and we have had light rain for most of the day.

Re: My first book of fiction - Timey-Whimey Book Cover
@GaryP, inspired by your book cover and Dr Who, I tried my best at recreating the spiralling clock face.
Far harder that it seems and it felt rude to let it just start so there is a Yin-Yang element included, or is it parallel universes or even black & white holes?
I certainly discovered Xara's Spiral is not really up to it.
I tried Scatter Brushes and Blends and Moulds, all with mixed results.
I hope someone can develop or suggest a better approach.

Re: My first book of fiction
That's amazingly close.
To be honest, I found the image, I did not create it. I was doing a search for antique bracket clocks on Shutterstock and when I saw this image, actually a series of related images, I said, this is perfect for the story. And if anybody actually buys the book and reads the title story, you will see how well the image complements the story.

Re: My first book of fiction
Cheers Egg, the second I Posted about Xara's Spirals not being that hot, I found the way to stack lots of them properly.
Do not use any scaling, centering or size factoring.
Ignore what Xara declare a spiral's centre is.
All (ALL) you need do is Clone and pull in/out the Wind around centre control, keeping it at 0deg.
Smart!? Counter-intuitive, more like. A control that has no built-in constraints or dimensioning.
