How do I email a Xara presentation/website
Good morning designers,
I am not sure which section this should be posted on. I use XDPX to produce presentations (I am allergic to PowerPoint and avoid it like the plague).
I have produced a simple standalone website that I run in a browser to provide a presentation to work colleagues (via Zoom) - works beautifully.
I want to send the complete presentation which is of the form: a folder called "index_htm_files" and an "index.htm" file to friends via email.
To load the presentation/website I right-click on the HTML file and select an appropriate browser - works on 99.9% of computers.
However, I wanted to send the complete presentation/website to a colleague via email and get the warning:
The following message to XXXXXXXX.org.uk was undeliverable. The reason for the problem: 550 5.7.1 Blocked by email filter (XXXXXXXX)
How can I send complete websites by email?
I prefer not to load the files to this thread as they contain controversial/private material relating to business issues.
Kind regards
Martin
PS Temporarily I just exported the presentation as a scrollable .pdf but this does not have the impact of a 'live' clickable screen.

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
first thing I would do is try zipping it - it is possible somewhere in your email system or their's a file type is blocked for privacy/security reasons - sending a zip should fix that

Apologies to everyone. I meant to add that I had already zipped the folder - Outlook will not allow folders to be added as attachments.
I guess that it is refused because it contains javascript files etc. I would like a workaround. I have sent scripts via email by changing the extension and then changing it back again, but this can get corrupted.

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
You could upload the zipped files to OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive and send the link for them to download.

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
Excuse me for replying to my own text.
I just tried experimenting by changing the 'zip' extension to 'abc' then back again on the recipient computer before unzipping and it worked a treat - simples!
I agree that the idea of using OneDrive etc is a brilliant option (I use pCloud) so for larger files, this is the way to go. But for small files, it seems that a simple cheat is to change the extension, probably a security risk but not sure.
Many thanks again for your help.

i was going to suggest encryption container next but i guess changing the file type does a good job of hiding content

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
I might be missing something here but, why not publish the small site as a website and share the link?
-
Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
i'm guessing this is intranet rather than internet so not out in the wild - private business was mentioned

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
Why not post the presentation to a subfolder on a website, then email a link. Far easier. It's what I do all the time with websites needing client approval before going live.
So it might be..
https://www.yourwebsite.com/presentations/presentation1
Simple.

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
Zip the rendered presentation, index_htm_file/ folder and index.htm.
Use https://emaillargefile.com or one of many other free services: https://www.howtogeek.com/133761/the...g-large-files/

Asking users to install a website on their computer in order to view a presentation, must be one of the clumsiest ways to disseminate information.

Assume you only have email and no access to the internet. Assume you cannot install applications like PowerPoint. A browser solution may be all can use. Not clumsy, a lifesaver.
You can run a Xara presentation from a memory stick or CD.

Martin - Maybe you can clarify what you are trying to accomplish here. We have many suggestions but need more input from you.

Email but no internet.. ..right.
Dropbox but no internet.. ..right
Everyone is going to be happy to install a website so they can see the presentation.. ..right. How do I see this on my iPad again? How does this work on my phone again?
This is a VERY poor way to distribute a presentation.
Better as a PDF if you want to rule out a web connection.
If you have a web connection then a web presentation is fine.

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
Unless I'm missing something you don't install a website you simply open the index.htm.
If it were a presentation, you would open it.
If it were a PDF, you would open it.
If it were a website, you would open it.
No installation.
There's also the presumption that the site will be viewed at the same location it was downloaded. Maybe they need a portable solution to be used in premises with no Internet connection.
Using a portable site isn't clumsy at all.

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
I can quite easily transfer an email from my galaxy phone or tab to my computer if the latter is not connected to the internet; - mind you I could tether the computer and phone so that the computer uses the mobile to connect to the internet, although there would be a cost if it went over bandwidth

If you send the website via email it will be a zip file or a collection of file attachments that you will have to copy somewhere or leave in a downloads folder. Then you have to locate the index file and click on it.
That's my point, it's not click and go.

We can agree to disagree.
BTW has anyone actually exported a Xara website and tried to run it with the network connection disconnected?

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
By way of an example here is a supersite/ presentation (attached); it could be on laptop or USB stick, or it could have been emailed in advance (depending on size).
In this case, yes, you have to download the files from TG, but if you were the author giving a presentation, it would be have been exported to your local device, and a USB stick could be distributed to a member of your audience.
No different between this and PowerPoint - in fact this presentation template was created from a Microsoft PowerPoint example: https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/Presentation/

With a powerpoint file I just click to run it. That's not the case for a zip file.
I would NEVER supply a presentation to a client in this manner, or any audience.
If I was presenting myself and chose to use a website as a presentation, then it would be an option, but I suspect that Xara requires a net connection to display properly.
Did you try it with the network disconnected?

Yes and it works as expected. The only reason I provided a .zip was to upload it to TG. Drop the two sets of files into any local folder and its one-click on the .htm file.
Give it a go.

I'm not saying it's not possible, I'm just saying it's a clumsy solution. Ever had an iPad owner discussing folders? Probably the same on Android devices. We should never assume out target audience has the technical ability that we do and if we have something to communicate we should make that so simple to access rather than suit our own convenience.
Anyway, we've flogged this to death, it's not my problem and the court of TG public opinion does not agree with me.

My daughter used to submit her homework (English and Art) in exactly that manner for 4 years. One of her submissions had source links to various newspapers. The teacher contacted me and mentioned the links didn't work. She was looking at the site whilst travelling home on the train. They magically started working again when she arrived home.

pauland you are missing the obvious. You are not installing a website, you are placing a number of files in a local filestore or running the same from media. I did not suggest I had Dropbox in my scenario.
In the real world I have had to arrive at a lecture with no advance knowledge of the set-up. PowerPoint available was many versions behind by own one, no external devices were allowed, media was sanitised on arrival. A PDF wouldn't cut it.
iPads and mobiles have browsers. "How do I see this on my iPad again? How does this work on my phone again?" equally apply to a PDF or PowerPoint file.
I used to "install a website" (integrate) into Enterprise SharePoint as the end-users did not want to break out into PowerPoint. The same client blocked all Internet access as well.

That is the whole benefit of a static website with relative linking; it will run from anywhere.

Well, imagine I sent that to my mother and her iPad and said "look at my presentation?".
It's not about how clever you are but making a message accessible to the recipient without requiring any technical knowledge.
We aren't going to agree and we can leave it there.

It depends on what external libraries or fonts it may need to load (or not load).

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
We're also skipping a significant point that was mentioned early on. Riftvalley said he wanted to email to his friends and the contents were private. His intention isn't to scatter this to the general public. Having it easily available on different devices with users of varying degrees of technical know how is not the issue.
The poor guy just wanted to send an email with an attachment.

Re: How do I email a Xara presentation/website
I think that is very relevant - I can see where Paul is coming from, but I don't think this a case where the info is being disseminated to the uninitiated; not to 'people in general'
Besides options are good; this is just another option
