Copy & Paste with transparent background
As far back as Designer Pro 11, you could copy and past an image with a transparent background.
I'm not sure about the in-between versions, but XDP16, XDP17 and Designer Pro+ don't seem to allow this.
The transparent section is pasted as a black background.
I'm sure I know the registry setting and I have changed that.
But, still cannot copy and past an image with a transparent background into XDP16, XDP17 and Designer Pro+.
Does anyone know if there's a fix for this?

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
Rik, no guarantees but in the Registry there is a setting Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xara\XtremePro Sub x64\17\Options\Clipboard\PasteAlpha.
Put its value to 1 when Pro+ is closed.
Other XDAs have similar paths.
Report back.

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
I just bought XWDP 17 during the cyber sales so this might affect me as well. I tried dragging & dropping (from Windows Explorer) and copying & pasting between open documents and from XDP 15 to XWDP 17. Transparency was kept in all instances. But when I checked the PasteAlpha registry key, it was set to '0' (this is also the case in XDP 15). So, there must be another setting involved as well....

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
Copying images with transparency should work, where are you copying the image from Rik?

Hi, Rob.
Try this site: wow emoji at DuckDuckGo
I can copy and paste one with a transparent background into DPX11 without any problems.
But, not into or DXP16 or DPX17 or Designer Pro+.
Acorn: That is the setting I changed. And restarted my Laptop and still no difference.

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
I have even tried Bhavesh's suggestion at https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...211#post604211.
@Rik & @Rob-Xar - I tried and failed.
If you use File > Import from Web address with https://www.techhunt.co.in/wp-conten.../Imoji-Wow.png, it works.
If you save to a file and drag into the XDA, it works.
If you copy from another application (IrfanView, Windows Snipping Tool, Affinity family), it fails.

Well, that doesn't seem to work for me. And I've used the link from my own web browser. And I've used the link from your post.
Neither work. I get an error that says 'There was a problem downloading the URL...'
And why add more and more steps into the workflow.
There should not be a need to save the file first and then have to import it... etc.
Copy & Paste should work,as it used to before.
I'm hoping this can be fixed.

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
I went to the image at https://www.techhunt.co.in/wp-conten.../Imoji-Wow.png that acorn posted, right clicked the image and selected copy image and pasted it into pro+ - no problem with transparency [and i have not changed registry key] - this was done in FireFox 83.0, maybe there is a browser issue here?

Strip off the Protocol (http// or https://).
Yet another Xara "feature".

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
You can set this with XaReg.
-
Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
copy/paste does not work in edge - get the black background Rik mentioned
not in a position to try chrome or other browser at the moment
@gary - I think that is the registry key change mentioned by acorn

Precisely. It is just a lot easier to make the change in RegEdit. And amazingly, more than 10 years after Bill Taylor (who created RegEdit along with John Horn and Steve Ledger) died it still works with all versions.

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
good to know gary... but I don't htink it is the answer to this issue :(

I'm using the same browser for XDP11 as I am for the other versions.
Yet, XDP11 works fine and the other versions do not.
UPDATE: If I copy and paste from MS Edge, it does not work. But, if I copy and paste from Firefox, it does work into Designer Pro+.

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
progress then... up to a point
it looks to me like in edge the website itself may be the culpret, but i am no expert, acorn would know more

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
@Xara...
The only browsers that work for me for transparency copy & paste are Firefox and ToR.
It is a FAIL with XaReg > Paste Bitmaps with Alpha.
It is a FAIL with Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xara\XtremePro Sub x64\17\Options\Clipboard\PasteAlpha.
It is a FAIL with a copy from another application (IrfanView, Windows Snipping Tool, Affinity family).
It works with a file drag from a folder.
It works with an Import from web address.
It works with a Placeholder > Replace with graphic file.

P.S. This Thread should be moved to the Dear Xara... Forum

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
This is mostly expected I believe
https://superuser.com/questions/2377...ground-instead
Snippet tool doesn't support transparency.
In these cases, you might have to save the file first and then open or import that into Xara (right-click > save or similar).
edit: if we don't have one I'll create an article for this
-
Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
so why does it work with firefox... ? [and apparently ToR]
-
Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
Depends on the application you are copying from, what information it provides to the clipboard.
-
Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
copying from firefox to an app is what we were discussing
you mention snippet tool - does this mean ffox does not use snippet ?
-
Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
No FireFox does not use the snippet tool. The snippet tool is a separate application that copies or saves a bitmap of whatever you have highlighted.
long story short, if copy / paste doesn't give the desired results, save the image or file and then open it up.
-
Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
yes rob of course
but you have not explained why it works in ffox, but not in edge.. edge uses the snippit tool then ?
what about other browsers
and if I try to copy/paste from affinity it ores not work at all - [edit from affinity to xda]
-
Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
I've said before - depends where you are copying it from, rather than what you are copying. You may get different results depending on where, as each application will provide different information to the clipboard.
In Xara for example, when you select something and copy, we'll create a bitmap copy for the clipboard, so you can paste and most applications will understand that.

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
I mentioned the Snipping Tool that Windows has, as in earlier versions, it handled the Alpha channel and could save out as a transparency.
It does not feature in any browser.
@Rob-Xar
I think your argument is somewhat circular.
I can open the original https://www.techhunt.co.in/wp-conten.../Imoji-Wow.png in any browser, Copy image and Paste into MS Word.
I can then Copy from MS Word and Paste into my XDA. Staging like this keeps the Alpha channel and it is transparent on the XDA design page.
If I can also bypass MS Word and Copy image and Paste directly and currently into XDPXv10, XP&GDv10, XDPXv11, XWDPv11, but thereafter it fails, the problem is not the browser, the Copy & Paste operation but the Xara-changed implementation. Perhaps when you just binned 32-bit support?

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
I have to agree with acorn - this as far as I can see is an issue with the XDA that does not happen with [some] other apps, so the question still is, why ?

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
It appears to import two different image files. Copy & Paste from FF imports a 32bit image with an alpha channel. Copy & Paste from Edge or Chrome imports a 24bit image without an alpha channel.
-
Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
so the browsers render the website differently
but it does not explain:

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
I have even dug out Safari and IE and tried.
Works into the older XPAs from a Safari Copy image.
Fails with IE & older XDAs' Preview.
It may be my XDAs all are x64(-bit) and have Paste Bitmaps with Alpha enabled.
Just checked with XaReg and only XWDPv12 was not so set. It FAILed when I set it.
Even tried with Xara Xtreme 5, that FAILed but I expected it to as it doesn't have an Alpha channel setting.
@Egg, all your Bitmap Properties views are demonstrating is that your XDA recognised FF but is rejecting the others' Alpha channel, thinking it garbage.
It looks like a refactoring exercise that failed to understand how the real world implemented the standard (badly) and that the prior iteration was more accommodating..

but it does not explain:
No it doesn't HD. Neither does it explain if I save the image from Chrome or Edge and import it into Xara it imports as a 32bit Standard Bitmap with an Alpha Channel but if I Copy & Paste it from either those two it imports as 24 bit JPG without Alpha Channel. I would think this is more a Windows issue than a specific browser issue.
EDIT: Cross-posting here Acorn. Googling this issue indicates it's far more widespread than XDA. It seems to occur within PS applications as well as others. Also whether Alpha Channels are being used (32bit) or Alphas are being applied to 24 bit channels.

Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
I have noticed that if the pasteboard is colored black for instance and this image is then saved as a png to the desktop and opened with something like Irfanview there seems to be a very definite black background whereas if the pasteboard is not colored and remains white the image exports correctly with no background. please correct me if I am wrong.
-
Re: Copy & Paste with transparent background
the black is when there is no alpha channel larry - without any information to define the transparency it defaults to black, ie 'no colour'
