Grouping/multiple selecting popups
I've got a map of a shopping centre with a list of all the shops alongside - each shop shows a red dot on the map when clicked - the popup.
I need to hide/un-hide a lot of the popups at the same time to check they are correct. I know I can use the "all layers visible" or hidden, but is there any way to select multiple layers (probably not) or any clever way to manage a long list of popups? Even scrolling up and down to the mouse on layer and then back up to find a popup is a PITA

Re: Grouping/multiple selecting popups
LGF, why not use the Preview as this is what you are delivering?
If there is an error then correct the design and Preview the change.
You could try the following but it requires a fair bit of discipline.
Soft-Group each Shape Name with its Dot.
With All Layers Visible, when you click on either with the Selector Tool, you get a bounding box from the Shop to its Dot.
It is fairly easy to ignore all the other Shops and Dots..
The discipline?
You have to remember to Ctrl-Click on the Dot when moving it otherwise the Shop detail is dragged out of place.

How many popups are you talking about LGF?

Re: Grouping/multiple selecting popups
@LGF
You could create a 'marker' layer (at the top of the stack) that gives all the dots an identifier (probably numerical) and one that references each popup layer such shop1, shop2 and so on. This layer can be hidden when publishing but will always be there for future reference as shops change.
Personally, I would not use popups, but would follow an approach Acorn demonstrated a while back which is to give each shop its own page. When a dot-link is executed it brings that page into a placeholder on the main page.
The advantage is a visitor is not having to open and close popups, they simply hit one link after another and up pops the shop of choice.
Best demonstrated here: https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/Map/
You can too make the shop page (say) 500px x 500px and it gets a lot easier to create your mobile variant.
The XAR doc attached will give you the idea and cover the 'marker layer' referred to above.
Just a thought.

Thanks for the ideas - really much appreciated.
Will try out to see which works best.

LGF, I didn't like the whole concept of multiple layer or even pages so here is just one dot:
:pointAttachment 128412
The "dot" has a Name of dot. I used a rounded corner rectangle of size 16px with a 50:50 linear Fill of Red/Blue.
This avoid a bitmap.
Each Key (A, B, C) has a Link of form: javascript: $('#dot').css("left", "[mmm]px").css("top", "[nnn]px");
where [mmm] and [nnn] are distances from the Origin (0, 0) in pixels.
I Locked the Map background and Shops (a, b, c).
If you use the Guides Layer and Layer Properties > Guides > Guidelines, you can use the Vertical value for [mmm] and the Horizontal value for [nnn].
You need to remember that the "dot has a size and its position is set from top left.
If you want to centre the "dot" you therefore need to subtract 8 from each value.
No extra Layers!

Re: Grouping/multiple selecting popups
Can't understand what this is supposed to do Acorn. Should it move the dot? If i click on either A, B or C I just get
a new index page saying:

Typical. In using Pro+, it is a pain to cycle round my available browsers.
Change the Links to include void to avoid the new window in Firefox: e.g., javascript: void $('#dot').css("left", "661px").css("top", "472px");
The change is good for other browsers. IE failed like Firefox.

That works Acorn. I agree that the testing in other browsers is a pia as is testing in your default browser opening numerous windows. Still prefer the preview in in my default browser far more than the old IE method.

Re: Grouping/multiple selecting popups
I carried on with the current approach of using pop-ups as all the original work had been done - if I had to do the site again from scratch, I might well go a different route.
OK - the mobile version of the site has never had the shop index/map as looking at it on a phone is just too tiny.
So currently, beside the home and contact pages, I have a "shop index page" with links to each of the shops' websites.
Client understands the problem but is asking if there's any way at all to make the map and dot work.
I told him not as far as I could see, but maybe I'm wrong - is there another approach to this to do this? (without it being seriously complicated ;) )

LGF,
Yes is the answer based on my assumption each shop popup is showing details for each shop (be it an embedded website or otherwise).
If true, you can combine Acorn's method of moving the "dot" to its chosen coordinates AND simultaneously open the corresponding popup, calling it using Xara's internal reference - javascript: xr_cpu(n).
This is explained in the demo: https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/Map/
Remember to create a "UsesJQuery" name.
Ignore Shops 1 to 4 in the demo; this is an alternative to using popups (a page within a page concept) - In my original solution, I have NOT extended the dot locator for shops 1-4. My approach to your original challenge was that all locators are already visible (numbered the same as the shop index) - it was then a two-way link for accessing the shops (from the index or the numbered dot).
I would settle for delivering v1 of the your solution and get comfortable with this approach before delivering a v2 (with dots on the map).

Thanks very much for the reply Gary.
The nature of the shops and the layout, requires that the shops are grouped together into Categories and visitors need to be able to find particular shops -when a visitor clicks a link ( the shop name) they need to see a marker on the map and I just see how any method can work on a cellphone size screen.

LGF, it is quite effective but a lot of bucks for little bang.
It needs to include the Shop Name, Grid Reference and probably a Link out to the Shop page/site. The dot should not close when you click on the map.
The categories ought not to just close.
The Shop Index needs to have the Map/Grid references in their own column, not at the end of the Shop Name.
It would be a big undertaking.

This approach still avoids Layers.
Two simple functions to hide and toggle a Pin or a number of Pins. [toggle could be replace by show]
The code is in the Page Code body.
The triggers are JavaScript calls to the functions in the text list. A click toggle the Pin to show or to hide.
These can be even on the Pin itself; try TH2 > Pin(TH2) > click and follow the route.

@Acorn
The jquery works just great - so simple...
but there's a "physical" problem - I've made the type 13pt which is far too small but I can't fit anything larger.
Also, as you'll see, there are around 50 shops and scrolling down the list would make the map disappear....
I reckon the solution is to just see list of shops to the width of the page (which would allow the text to be much bigger) - and have the pins and the map on a "pop up" layer which fills the width of the browser - this would also make the map easier to read. Then a close button which lets you see the list of shops again.
What do you reckon? And many thanks once again for your work.
BTW: If I backspace on the first line to get rid of the "1" it shifts down to the next line and so on....?
I've uploaded the page as it stands to http://www.mikekaplandesign.com/Thesen

@LGF _ I think you can still go with Acorn's navigation menu: have the map fill the browser window and call the menu when required: https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/zMap
When you select a shop, (using Acorn's code) it shows the pin on the map. I extended the code to close the menu and see the map fill the browser window, to make it more visible - you can of course still expand the map.
Having the menu and the map in the same space, avoids the possibility that a visitor selects a shop/pin, but has to scroll to the map to see that pin. This issue and others do not become obvious until you view a site on different mobiles. Also, to make the mobile version legible on a compact mobile, the font sizes needed to increase.
I also added header anchors to the shop index categories to allow the visitor to toggle between a pin on the map and its shop index category.
The code has been extended with the menu given a class name "places" and there is a toggle on the link "List Places" that shows and hides the menu.
Should you want the menus to be permanently visible, you may need to use scrollTo to ensure the map and pins are are always in view. I also turned on Scale-to-Fit-Width (maximum 640px).
Just a thought on usability.

Re: Grouping/multiple selecting popups
I agree with you Gary. The site is overly large with virtually two duplicated menu's, one leading to location icons and the other leading to web links. I've been trying to combine them into a single menu whereby clicking a single menu will lead to a map with location icon from where you can click the icon to link to the webpage.
Siran supplied a great FAQ's accordian which I've messed about with to create an accordian menu with url links which saves menu space in this case.
If I get the time I might try to combine it to a single action, press the menu button to show location then press the location icon to view their website.

@LGF the standard menu provides an easy way to manage the navigation - I am guessing in your original design you may have created a popup for every shop (since that is how I think you originally managed the pins).
If you have that structure already, you could extend it to create a 'shop window' which pops-up immediately below the map: https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/zMap/
For each javascript link in the menu, I have added its corresponding popup (shop window).
Having each pin scroll to its category heading also gives you a 'kind-of' accordion operation, as does the sticky map return button which scrolls the map back into view.
The tricky bit here is you need the internal reference for each popup - I simply created reference list to keep track off the popups.
That's me done for maps :D
The real test with all this of course is to view it for usability on a mobile

Gary, a solid effort; the Shop Front is wizard as a concept.
It can be more readily implemented (without Layers) if you just add the same ClassName as the Pin so you have Pin/Shop Front. The Shop front needs a back-link to the map to complete the journey.
I set up a simple example of this with arrows and labels but you elevated it to its proper position.
I do like the red mannequin. It needs to be pointing.
I would personally go that little further and add an Anchor to every shop listing so on clicking the Pin the page srolls to the listing and the mannequin is there pointing.
Overall, I think this is a well-rounded approach that needs to be established as a Xara 'Map / You are Here' Template.

@Acorn - agreed including the shop window details with the location class (pin) works much better than popups; changed shops 34 & 35 as examples: https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/zMap/.
To make it visibly easy to edit the layout, I placed the two shop details on their own "class" layers which avoids stacking on the MouseOff layer. As long as there is no link to a "class" layer and it is visible, it seems to work OK.
The upside is that "Close Pins" clears the Shop Window too - the sticky red mannequin brings the map back into view.
I did look at condensing the full shop-index into an accordion style dropdown category menu, but the full index scrolls well and not sure it is worth faffing around with additional code.
Tested all this on an Xperia X Compact 4.6" screen - the shop index font size could maybe go to 23px.
@LGF - I have attached an updated XAR. - I think now you should be able to avoid all popups.
Gary
BTW: should have said the links to pins needs javascript: hidePins();showPin('LOC34')

@Gary - I blown away by your efforts to help solve this problem - thank you SO much! AND IT IS USABLE ON MOBILE!
Regarding the "internal reference for each pop up" - I'm a bit confused by "Ref> cpu(7)" - this is a link to Shop Popup1. Why does there have to be a link?
Sorry if this shows lack of understanding on my part, but why do I have to keep track of the layers - couldn't pin1 read 44 instead and the popup layer be renamed popup44?
All the shops are listed below the map so it's easy for me to see "who's who".
@Acorn - Thank you for all your thinking too! - like the idea of being able to go back the List of Places Menu...but I'll get this "simple version" working first.

why does the internal popup reference no.1 for instance, show Ref>cpu(7) and not (1) to correspond to popup layer1? Its "label" is used to trigger shop popup 1 at the same time (in addition to) the pin.....?

@LGF OK let's try to explain some things here:
1. The standard way to link to a popup is to link to the name you have given it in the P&L gallery. However, when you want to execute more than one action simultaneously, you would revert to using a JavaScript link. This requires you to identify Xara's internal reference for that popup (or if related to popup actions only see here: https://help.xara.com/article/26-und...d-web-features).
2. To find these, you would click on a standard popup – in my example REF> is the link to each popup. When you hover over that link (in a Chrome browser), in the bottom left of your screen you will see javascript: xr_cpu(n), where 'n' is the internal reference for that popup. It will be different for every popup across all variants and you must preview the complete site (note just the page) in order to get the correct reference. See: https://initiostar.co.uk/demo/HowTo/ - this was extended to help with the explanation (not for live use). I use the reference table to keep track of Xara's internal popup references.
3. The ONLY reason I created a shop popup is to create a Shop Window – without it just give each pin a class name 'hmtlclass=LOCx' and use the link javascript: showPin('LOCx'). Each pin then has a header anchor to its category.
4. Should you want to have the SHOP WINDOW, this can be a popup, OR a set of objects that are given the SAME class name as their associated pin. For the shop window popups, to show the pin AND open the shop window, this is two simultaneous actions and you need to use a javascript link to achieve that: showPin('LOCx'); xr_cpu(n).
5. Should you want to use a Class approach, you can as highlighted from the Clothing Jewellery link, simply create each shop window by giving any objects you want to appear in that space the same Class name as the pin to which they refer. As doing so would have all objects stacked on top of one another in the same space, I have used a visible layer for each class Shop Window - all objects on that layer have the same class name as the pin to which they refer. These layers must be visible when you publish.
6. All I did to switch from using a popup for Shops 34 & 35 was to create two layers, in this case with layer names of Class 35 and Class 34, The names could be anything, but it was easier to highlight I was using a class method for these two shops and to give them their shop number. Then, I copied and pasted the content from the popup to the Class layer and gave everything the class name associated with its pin.
Personally, I would switch to using Classes and not Popups (as per shops 34 & 35). You could try just removing any links to a previous popup, give all the objects the same class name as their pin and make it visible. Not tested it, but if it works would save you some time.

Re: Grouping/multiple selecting popups
Hi Gary - you really do go the extra mile...
I do understand the "mechanics" of the what bits of JS do, I was just wondering if what they are called(named) could be changed, but I see it's the "structure?" f the code.
I'm going to give the Classes a go for one category of shops and see how it comes out.
Many thanks,
Mike
EDIT:Sorry
I just wondering why the first Ref on the Popup Internal Reference is cpu7 - why not 1? What are Ref>cpu(1-6) being used for?
I will go the layers route but it would help a lot if the layer number eg: Beyond Boutique which is TH8, I want to call Class 8 - not class 35. And the name for the corresponding red dot to be htmlclass=LOC8
Many thanks,
Mike

Re: Grouping/multiple selecting popups
I've just worked out that I can label them corresponding shop numbers as long as I change all the names and LOC pins as well...:)
-
Re: Grouping/multiple selecting popups
That's true, you can use any names you want, but you cannot have duplicates. You can only have 1 x TH8. so you might need something like TH8A if there is more than one shop with the same label.

Re: Grouping/multiple selecting popups
I've been experimenting for a few days now on creating a location spot that didn't require a clear button. The canvas option looked promising however mobile browsers couldn't accomodate ctx.clearRectange so whilst it worked fine on a pc and cleared the spots it didn't on mobile browsers.
I'v gone a different route now, here's the result. Only the Accomodation section works at present. I'm having issue with local and global variable at present for links to the websites but I'll push on. It's a fun challenge.
NOTE: I've made no effort to locate the location spots in the real locations as I don't know where they are. However it's very simple to do so.

Re: Grouping/multiple selecting popups
Here's a link to the canvas method but it doesn't work on mobile browsers, all the location dots remain visible. Just click on any of the three orange buttons at the top. EDIT: Works okay in FF but not in Chrome of Edge!
