Help to remake a simple Logo element
Hello all, I'm a first time poster on Talk Graphics, very much out of my depth with how much Xara can do and how to use it effectively.
I've been lurking and learning for a few months now. Xara Desktop has been awesome at making super small size PDFs that look amazing.
Xara Cloud I'm not loving yet, but I appreciate it too, I have the Teams+ but am apprehensive about how my less tech capable Senior team mates will like it. I'm the problem solver, not the problem creator!
My issue for this post is to re-create my Mother's old logo and incorporate it into a new design.
What i need to do is a reverse of the attached image, so just the circle with the colors swapped.
Can I do that in Xara DP+? Or am I better of trying my luck with Inkscape?
Thank you so much for any help, seems to be a great group that I can learn a lot from.
I loved Xara 3D way back in 2000, all the new features are awesome, but a little daunting.

Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
I think this can be created in Designer Pro + using the Shape Tool. But it is very difficult to do from the size you posted. Do you have a better image? Or can you scan or photograph a printed document with the logo?

Thanks for the quick response.
Unfortunately no, I found and clipped the image from the "Wayback Machine" copy of the website.
I'm not looking for a 100% replica, it will be a small part of the new logo design.
Just something recognizable. I was hoping that you experts may know of a way to manipulate a circle to give me that effect.
Someone designed that logo in 1988, during the Windows 3.11 days, so probably some simple effect.
The new logo is SVG and nice and crisp and the central part is a globe currently.
I just wanted to surprise her with a version with the old logo reversed in place of the globe.

Hi Ojibwe, welcome to talkGraphics.
As Gary states your image is really to small to do much with but is this the effect you're after?

Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
For clarity I'll upload the SVG and PNG of what I want to incorporate it into.
Likely not needed. I'm thinking I may need to add a circle around the old logo design to keep it matching the globe portion.

Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
Pretty darn close Egg, is that modifiable? And of course, how did you do that?
It looks a bit stretched and anemic, but definitely on the right track.
Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
Loving the 2nd attempt much more, but no fading out.
It may be my eyes, but it looks like a fade out toward the edge.
I need crisp solid blue color, #00587C

That's why I said we'd need a larger original. Your attachment is way to small to recreate.

So XDP+ doesn't have shape manipulation tools?
Some effect that I can overlay on a circle to get the result I'm looking for?
In my OP, I mentioned Inkscape, I'm awful at that but have struggled through a few things now.
If not possible in Xara could someone give me an idea what to try in using Inkscape? I'm too scared of Gimp.
Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
Sorry Ojibwe, I'm losing you now. My point was your original attachment makes it almost impossible to recreate the logo, there's not enough detail.

In what way. I'm not following you?
Supply a decent sized original of your logo and then we can help. Other than that we're just guessing what you see as non-complience to the original.
As for Inkscape, Xara in the main can do most things Inkscape can do and can do far more than Inkscape can't acheive.
Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
I guess my OP wasn't clear enough. My intention was to re-create (from scratch) starting with a blue circle, using an effect to achieve the negative of the original.
Thus the opposite of the original logo, to incorporate into the design I uploaded with the wings, replacing the globe.
Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
As I commented earlier, your 2nd attempt was pretty much spot on, just too whispy rather than clearly defined edges.
I did ask how you achieved that. Maybe the quick response time is leading to missed messaging.
I'm not out to make a facsimile using the original, just something recognizable as an homage to the original logo.

Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
Okay Ojibwe, I think your original small image was creating issues with my understanding of your requirements. I was using feathering and linear fills to produce what I saw in the original.
This time I've gone back to a less complicated rendering.
Does this match what you're after?
Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
Yes that's what I am after!
Please do tell me how you achieved this.
I have a lot to learn to get the most out of Xara, but I'm willing and able.
Thanks Egg!

Great. However it's just after 6 in the morning here so I'm off to bed. Will get back to answer your questions tomorrow evening. Goodnight ;)

Hi Egg, hoping you can get me going on making that element as you were able.
Thank you.

Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
Again, thank you Egg, I've watched it through once so far, I'll try and emulate while watching next.
Any suggestions on rounding the points a little where they meet the outside of the circle?
I'm working on a LinkTree type webpage with variants currently, I'm not at the frustration point yet to ask for help.
If I do, I will be posting in the appropriate section.
Thanks for your video, tomorrow I'll tackle that logo project.
I do love the support I'm seeing on this forum.
Re: Help to remake a simple Logo element
Best way to round the points would be to make the 'cresents' slightly larger than the circle then group all cresents and shift select the circle an Ctrl+3 (Intersect shapes). You could go further and round these corner some more.
