Designer Pro + vs Designer Pro
I read Robs post about Designer Pro +. did I read it right that Xara is going to be making the most updates/frequently to this + version and not Designer Pro? I thought that is why we paid to have this yearly service when we bought this Pro product that we would be getting regular updates through out the year.
Are these updates to the Plus version also going to come to the regular Pro version? My renewal date is fast approaching and I am really questioning what is going on.

Re: Designer Pro + vs Designer Pro
It is fairly simple. Pro+ is totally in Xara's gift so updates can be as frequent and actually have to match the changes in Xara Cloud+.
The other Xara Desktop applications (XDA) (XDPX, XWD(P) & XP&GD) are packaged by Magix.
Magix add in all their hooks and take around a fortnight to do so.
XDAs will be forced into the Update service profile of 3-5 releases in a year with Magix breathing heavily to ensure there is a major version release annually, regardless of merit.
I have made a personal choice to jump to the Xara Subscription model and lose Magix.
There is a cost but one I am comfortable with: https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...527#post623527.
In summary, most of the changes in Pro+ will eventually feed down into the XDAs.

Adding to this:
A new update to Pro+ was already released: https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...e-20-0-0-59369
Another update is in beta test: https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...a-Designer-Pro
We will continue to monitor and understand user reaction/feedback as we move forward.

Matt,
How long to think it will be before these updates from Pro + makes it's way into the normal Pro version?

Hi Ray,
Product release schedules are typically defined at a minimum of 12 months in advance with a strategic partner like Magix. To answer your question directly, not all updates will make it to all products and any changes to the established schedule is still being evaluated. Our focus right now is good, consistent updates for Xara Cloud and Designer Pro+ (and the beta test for 4k support). We've established a consistent product rhythm for Xara Cloud and, based on the positive response to the new Cloud+ offering, our goal is to achieve that with Designer Pro+. Maybe there is a new normal?
All the best,

Re: Designer Pro + vs Designer Pro
as in: the subscription only pro+ is now the normal designer pro ?
'strategic partner' [love the way you put that :)] magix is tactically sidelined....

Matt, none of the above answered Ray's (and Gary's and others') ask about why would people bother with a second-rate service and stay with Pro or even consider a jump to Pro+ at greater cost if there is not some clarity about what is in it for them? What you actually have just implied is you'll develop Pro+. That might be new but it's not normal.

-
Re: Designer Pro + vs Designer Pro
So @Matt ,you're getting back on your promise to have more frequent updates for the xda version? sad!
Had a go at the online version and designer pro+ version.
Only the pricing is a dumb business approach;
From the corona outbreak most vendors decide to lower prices to make self employed and small businesses have some breathing space.
Could have been a great marketing opportunity here.
The teams+ version should be from 1 person and up and have an add member subscription attached to it.
Or add another role like editor(all rights but no admin rights)
Now you could say"have a go at the normal pro+ version" but this would double the cost if a team consists of two.
Also why this so called business approach,as if all you have are big agencies with teams of more than 3,they probably are using apps from the mud company.
But you're nothing like the mud company and have yet to gain some ground(you've got history but no merit) to be a real player in a very crowded field.
The online editor is actually nothing great other then adding images, change text and color and rearrange stuff.
With the xda bundled it may work but like said above it's to expensive to start with.

@haakoo
I'll use this opportunity to update you (and others) on Xara:
Xara had a Covid-19 Here2Help 50% discount on plans sold directly by us since March. The active promotion of this campaign has stopped this week. Also, the Xara team did an amazing job of creating C-19 flyers and posters that people and businesses could use to educate others. We did our best to give help where we could to organizations in need on the front lines.
Xara has an offer for existing Desktop users considering the new Cloud+ offerings. 50% discount on year 1. This is still ongoing. For TG, the 50% offer was available from Day 1 of launch. https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...and-Xara-Cloud (If you have an active update service or any questions about pricing for your situation, then feel free to contact us through normal sales channels. There is a direct chat on www.xara.com, and in Xara Cloud and the Pro+ support page for Xara paying customers). We've been happy to be extremely flexible with anyone wanting to cancel or reduce costs due to the crises. (and even businesses that need only 2 users). Just contact us.
There will be releases of the Desktop versions via Magix. No one from Xara has suggested otherwise.
As for features and fixes across Pro+ vs the other Desktop versions, roadmaps and build schedules are established many months in advance as I noted above. When working with partners, especially strategic ones like Magix where the products are tightly integrated into the partner's workflow like installation, registration, updating, licensing, etc., these plans do not change 'on a dime'.
Take care and all the best,
Matt

Matt, can I add in that I received the offer and extended it to TGers. A pity Kate's TG Announcement passed many by. I saw the C19 Flyers and found they did have a use, so thank you.
I am unsure if my particular circumstances around the discount was ever resolved:
Quote:
Simply enter coupon TALKGRAPHICS during purchase to get 50% off Year 1 (existing Xara Cloud subscribers contact us)
. I came into Xara Cloud from a completely different direction. Perhaps your generosity has already been received but it is worth asking again! (https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...690#post617690).
Good luck with Xara Cloud+ and Xara Pro+.
I still believe TGers need your explicit endorsement that Xara XDAs (XDPX, XWD(P)), XP&GD) are still in your sights for substantial upgrades.
As an aside, dare I assume that your partnership with Magix has excluded you from the potential mailing list of XDA purchasers as Magix effectively owns these customers?
I am assuming this as your marketing campaign is very haphazard as are your update notifications. You don't PUSH information as much as you should and you have little information for others to PULL.

Re: Designer Pro + vs Designer Pro
Likely, Pro or Pro+ will be an individual decision one makes based on one's own requirements.
I manage a handful of websites, but it is not my primary business. I have used Pro (and 365 back to WD 6). For me the original attraction to Xara was the ability to do most web-things within a single package, albeit with extra HTML/CSS and third party widgets on some occasions.
The conundrum on what to do for the future (for me at least) is this: I do not have any requirements for Cloud or Cloud+ and see little merit for subscribing to a service I am not going to use. Pro v17 added little of any significance to v16.3 either, but both fulfil my immediate needs. It would be good to see the bugs sorted out!
- I have to accept on face value Xara's commitment to provide further updates and bug fixes through Magix; maybe enhancements being made in Pro+ will eventually trickle down to Pro too - we'll see.
- I don't have an issue with a subscription service (it used to be called an Annual Licence Fee years back and was often bundled with an Annual Support Fee).
- I'll not delve off into the marketing issues between Xara and Magix either (but they are clear to me as someone who has been in software sales and marketing since '76).
- A published author/partner collective roadmap would help, especially since Xara claim one exits.
My preferred outcome would be to subscribe(at the right price) to Xara for Pro+ . Rationale: (1) they are the software author and hence a better route to support and (2) I would avoid Magix's cross-selling initiatives and nag-upgrade pop-ups; the latest of which fails to even install on my system.
I'll be test driving the Beta Pro+ DPI this week (on a 4K 26in) – Interesting! Having just successfully completed 4K scaling for my own company's software it will make a good comparison.

Thank you Matt for your response;
I did like the easy sharing between the two parts but feel the online editor is lacking to much(take a look at photopea, gravit designer)
The dpi+ is just the xda we all know and love, shame it isn't the desktop version for us all, with a choice to opt in for the online addition.
The benefits of the teams pro+ version and willingness to pay,the threshold makes it just to much to make the jump.
You suggest to get in touch with the sales department to have some dispensation by request,my feeling is it shouldn't have this threshold in the first place.
I agree with acorn on this;the marketing and presence could have been more, take a look at the men and women in Nottingham, they are playing the game and not completely there yet but are noticed by many.
I hope the development will prosper and bring a brighter future for xara so we can enjoy working with one or the other.(xda or xda/pro+)

Re: Designer Pro + vs Designer Pro
This is all very confusing! I currently have Designer Pro X via Magic and I have been fairly disappointed with them since they took over the sales and support. Upgrades are more complex than they were before and their support is very poor. The one bug report I submitted via them was completely misunderstood and I have not bothered since. I use Designer constantly and want to keep up to date with the latest features and would welcome some better support. However, I have no interest whatsoever in the cloud version. I've just had notice of my renewal for the update service through Magix for £99 and if I use the discount code mentioned earlier here then I could change to Xara Cloud and Designer Pro Plus for approx. £101 for the first year so it is very tempting to switch. However, in future years presumably I'd have to pay the full cost of the Cloud service which at over £200 for a year seems very expensive when I have no interest in the cloud part of the service. I really don't know what to do!

I'm sure sales will be flexible when the renewal comes round, and actively monitors offers and feedback they get from it. You can send us a message in Intercom on our website and we can help :)

Re: Designer Pro + vs Designer Pro
In the last few days I had the opportunity to trial Pro+ HiDPI Beta1 and Beta 2 and compare both against Pro v16.3 and Pro v17 on two different high-resolution displays 3840px x 2160px x 150% magnification 26in (Dell AIO Desktop) and 3200px x 1800px x 225% magnification (Dell XP13 Laptop).
To be objective, I started with the v16 release notes (noting the dates added on the Contents page) http://releasenotes.xara.hosting/designer-pro-x16/; similarly I went through the same for v17 http://releasenotes.xara.hosting/web-designer-17/
From there I headed over to the Xara website pricing/ product comparatives. Line-by-line, I reviewed the marketing message/capability with my functional understanding of Pro X (specifically as a stand-alone desktop product as Pro v17 is today).
Everyone can make their own judgement by doing their own analysis, but to help, I extracted the Xara comparatives and added my own assessment of what is today possible with the current Pro v17. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...1pA/edit#gid=0
In some cases it would require some thought, but by example if you wanted to create a library of assets, it is easy to do this with own host service /cloud provider.
Summary Conclusions:
1. Functionally, in stand-alone mode, there are a few real differences between v16.3, v17 and Pro+ (for now); most have work-arounds even if you have to use a little HTML/CSS.
2. Where you do not have a requirement for Cloud, one has to trust Xara will not unnecessarily limit the inclusion of enhancements, that under their current agreement, would be provided by Magix.
3. As said in various other threads on the the same subject, I would prefer to track the product author and contract direct, but I can live with the alternative, if the former becomes commercially unacceptable.
There will never be a better time to unravel the marketing myths with some reality - however without a clear product published roadmap we are all left second guessing what the outcome will be.

I ask this because when testing the beta version, I tried opening a file from June 2016 and it reported several live FX were missing which I wasn't expecting.
The 'Pro+' beta version didn't keep me awake all night, but did display without the blurriness that the current versions do. To be honest I don't think the ability for a program to display correctly should be a selling point, it just should be (and for all versions).

Re: Designer Pro + vs Designer Pro
So, Do we report bugs to Magix or Xara? I feel there is some information that is withheld back from us users. The clarity of all this is foggy at best. My guess is that Magix contract with selling Xara will come to an end and Xara will remain with the cloud. So people like myself who are using Xara pro 17 will be left high and dry. This is why I use other tools in my box, never rely on one software, they all look after their own interest and not their users. Sorry but after decades of using Xara I have all the right to express myself here.

Magix sees the Xara Desktop Applications (XDA) as a Cash Cow so Matt Bolton is contracted to deliver 3 to 4 version updates a year, ensuring one is a "major" release so Magix can market the XDAs all over again, catching the unwary in its shoddy marketing strategy. The XDAs will therefore continue.
Xara will develop against its flagship Pro+ (& Cloud+) first off so updates will be more frequent and comprehensive. Ultimately as all are derived from the same code base there cannot be too much variance as that would cascade development, testing and delivery issues. Each XDA & Pro+ is effectively the same underlying engine with the User Interface pared back: any .XAR / .WEB file is editable in all XDAs, it is just the functionality to do so has been crippled out.
You report XDA faults through Magix - https://support2.magix.com/customer/.
You report Pro+/Cloud+ faults through Xara, probably using Intercom on the web is better than https://xara.com/contact-us/.

Well, XARA. I give up. I downloaded what I thought was an upgrade to XDP17 and it's call Pro+. Worked fine then have to log in to some freakin' website to gain access. This is all within my subscription service. Xara/Magix whatever you call yourselves - you have lost me. I'm now going over to Affinity and will not look back. I am sick of the goal posts constantly being moved, heightened, narrowed and removed. The way you change things, reword things and generally don't give a sh!t about long term users, you should be ashamed. All you care about is the almighty $. XDP is a simple, easy to use program - Affinity has some other challenges, but it is a living, breathing beast - XDP is an old, tired and expensive relic.
I won't even kiss you goodbye - just have to spit out the horrid taste you've left in my mouth.

Pnchdara, you have fallen into the mire around Magix's marketing and Xara's hope of cleaving away from their partner. It is a b***hfest of many years' fester and you are one of the many.
If you want your upgrade go to https://www.magix.com/gb/photo-graph...-designer-pro/ and pick the Free trial button towards the bottom of the page. This allows you to use your current licence number and purchase email address to register, provided you are withing the Update service cover.
If you are not you can repurchase with the Upgrade button.
Xara Design Pro+ & Xara Cloud+ are Xara's alternative route.
For a better understanding, read my notes inhttps://www.talkgraphics.com/showthread.php?83565-Casual-Notes-on-Xara-Cloud-and-Xara-Pro-Combo.

Thanks Acorn. I too will miss the valuable talent such as yourself, gwpriester, angelize and all the others. I can't express my disappointment - however that being said, look at Inkscape, GIMP, Chasys, Krita, Scribus, Blender and Paint.Net to name some excellent alternative freeware (donations accepted), then there's Photoline, Serif Affinity (Designer, Photo and Publisher - all living, breathing projects) and Resolve (slightly different category). There's a plethora of alternatives. Getting on their bandwagons is just a different way of looking at things and changing workflow slightly. (Plenty of help out there)
Mentioning the various ways to buy/upgrade these Xara/Magix products reminds me of the magic roundabouts at Hemmel Hempstead - the Plough Roundabout - I'd bet the team at Xara arbitrarily drive around this weird set of rings and randomly take an exit and there they'd open a mysterious envelope that magically determines the way they'll try and exploit money from their customer base.... gotta see some dumb humour in it.
I wish all you guys the best. 2020 will have changed may peoples lives. Make sure your seat belts are fastened when Xara/Magix take their fizzy drive around the roundabouts.

It's actually really simple, inside lane to go to the next roundabout, outside lane to turn off at that exit. All the lanes are clearly marked as well, it's much faster than a set of traffic lights. The only issue is when you come across drivers who don't know how roundabouts work and pick the right lane for everything (which you find everywhere...).
Anyway, if you need help with getting DP+ running or finding the update for version 17, you can go to our website, www.xara.com and use the intercom button at the bottom right. We can help.
Thanks

Re: Designer Pro + vs Designer Pro
My account/contract understanding here is this:
Where I have an existing Xara product (and not a new derivative with a + sign or Cloud association), my account/contract is with Magix, my support comes from Magix. If I want to upgrade (to a non +, non Cloud release), I head over to the Magix website for any of the products listed below.
Attachment 127270
I login to my account (email and password). I have 3 options: I can download a trial version (e.g. Pro v17), I can upgrade (e.g v16.3 to v17 ) provided I have subscribed to THEIR annual upgrade service (UPS), or I can purchase a perpetual licence whereupon I have THEIR UPS for 12 months thereafter.
Should I want to upgrade to Xara's + or cloud combo derivatives, I would contact Xara, otherwise everything is with Magix. Magix controls my activation keys not Xara.

Re: Designer Pro + vs Designer Pro
do I detect irony in your post Rob?
You have to admit the whole nomenclature of the product range, added to the fact that the legacy desktop programs are not actually sold by Xara any more, is bound to be confusing for some

It is confusing from the outside, especially to existing users. I myself am not fond of the current presentation of our products in this manner, but I'm sure this will improve in the future.

Well it should not be too difficult for Xara to clearly explain what Xara/ Magix is responsible for (products and services.) - TG members are continually helping route enquirers to the right location.
I have my doubts whether it is much clearer internally within Xara - here is a straight extract from the Xara website (albeit with my added comparison with Pro v17) : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...1pA/edit#gid=0
I understand what Xara trying to do by matching product functionality to the way in which a 'new customer' might want to use it. But wow, is this really the best that can be done? How about rationalising marketing of the new product set into 'Pro' and 'ProCloud'?
As to the Xara website itself - others are better qualified than me here, but for all techo gizmos deployed and leaving aside the fancy animation (just check its impact with Google Lighthouse on performance); surely the talent in Xara could have been deployed to enhance your own website capabilities?
