I would like to purchase a Designer Pro X license, but I am afraid v17 will released a few months later. If I buy it now, will I get v17 for free?
Yes you will if v17.0 is released within the period of your Update service.
If you buy today you will get v16.3.1 and at the end of the Update Service it is most probably you will have v17.1, v17.2 or v17.3.
The problem then is if you then have a reinstall forced on you for whatever reason, you will revert to v16.3.1.
Personally, I would wait to the release of v17.1 even if v17.0 is expected by the end of March coming.
This is simply because any new major release always has bugs and if you buy in at v17.0 there is a chance that Xara will not make v17.1 just a bug release and you will be stuck with a buggy version until you are frustrated enough to renew.
In the next coming weeks download the trial of Xara Web Designer Premium for 30 days and then do the same for Xara Designer Pro X for the next 30 days. You can download and not register immediately.
If v17.0 is released in this period, you may be able to download trial versions all over and so get 4 months of practice and then buy in.

Also, see and read this.
If online content not available after 365 days, then I will lost the access to the Print and Web Components? Lost the access to the widgets unless I upgrade? If I cannot access to those widgets without upgrade, Designer Pro X only a drawing and photo editor which is useless to me, as I have CorelDraw Graphic Suite already.
You are able to Download all and store on your computer. All widgets are available to you and will work thereafter. Your problem is if your regressed version doesn't recognize the later widgets. You can cover yourself by keeping two copies active.
Acorn
Acorn do you mean version 16 is bug free :)
After download the content can I backup those widgets for future re-installation? What is the folder location of the download content?
Edit:
I think I found the location of the content based on this information
https://help.xara.com/article/113-wh...ontent-catalog
In my PC they are in AppData\Local\Xara\XtremePro\16\Cache\designs\eng
Can I import the cache back to Local Design Gallery if I reinstall the software?
Yes you can backup the content and widgets and use them later if the worst happens. The path you stated is correct and you need to simply copy the 'eng' folder to another location and copy it back again if needed. There is no installing of the content, just copy and paste in the right location.
John, the OP is an intelligent questioner and yet Xara's guide is still vague.
None of this covers the ability to Download all.Quote:
Note: Any templates or widgets that you have already used in your existing documents will continue to work and be editable, including the Xara Slideshow widget.
The Xara Desktop applications have wonderful capabilities but their marketing and delivery are still misaligned to hard reality.
Acorn
Acorn,
I will add that to my template text along with the link for the next time the question comes up.
@Acorn
And I am hoping that Magix will also update the advert web pages to make the Update Service front and centre, such that users read it and are aware of what it all means before purchase. This should include FAQ describing advantages, disadvantages, problems, flaws and mitigation for each product.
Would a Mod move this Thread to the Dear Xara Forum as a pre-sales Case Study or anti-pattern User Story.

Where i can find "whats new" Xara Designer 17 ? Because it is already out(I updated today), but there is no description of new features.
PS: http://dl03.magix.net/designerprox17_dlm.exe
thats quick off the mark - the manual link still points to ver 16.. don't think there are any release notes yet....
indeed - no record of it yet on the official help: https://help.xara.com/
it installed ok on my computer as a trial
I had a go with the v17.0 install.
The only difference i have for this installation it that it seems to block my prior installs of v16.3.1 so I can not run two versions of both at the same time.
I have found this essential previously when a version is that buggy that I have to revert back.
I reckon I'll just run v17.0 as a trial for now.
There is always a disappointment.

The MagiXara fandango:
- Download v17.0.
- [Queried] Deactivate second install of v16.n.
- Register v17.0.
- Run as administrator.
- Check over MS Registry settings you have previously changed and/or use XaReg to get things back to how you want them.
- Set up Custom Toolbars, change XML settings, reconsider blocking Magix "phone home" folders, etc.
- Check %localappdata%\Xara\XtremePro\17\Cache\ Properties: 250 files, 242 Folders, 2.83MB. Empty all bar First Look > Introduction.
- In Local Designs gallery, Right-click First Look folder and select Download All: Cache now (277 files, 3.53 MB).
- Basically, the Free Example Components Folder is populated (1 OCC page, 28 files, 713 kB).
- Repeat for other top level folders. Expect a long wait, so prioritise:
- Components (8 OCC pages, 3,014 files, 106 MB)
- Print (22 OCC pages, 8,391 files, 688 MB)
- Presentations (3 OCC pages, 1,174 files, 51.0 MB)
- Social Media (2 OCC pages, 362 files, 25.8 MB)
- Websites (51 OCC pages, TBA files, TBA MB) - a very long wait.
- (gosh) E-books (V17) (1 OCC page, 272 files, 33.1 MB)
- Sit down and discover what's new and what works.

Interesting that v17.0 is out with a Release Date of 12 March 2020 and Magix is still selling v16.
Doesn't exactly help those who might have bought in in the last few days as their Registration version will be v16.3 and they will "fall back" to that and not v17.0.
So the Magix strap line is Buy Now and regress back to v16.3.0, 25 October 2019.
Acorn
xara used to have a 'period of grace', I think it was a month...
is it really such a logistical difficulty that everything cannot all come out at once...
So I had three fails with the Websites download:
- %localappdata%\Xara\XtremePro\17\Cache\designs\eng \websites\retrowebsites\websitethemes\sculpture\ is missing sculpture_gallery_page.xar, Gallery Page, , P,,,,,,1072909896.
- %localappdata%\Xara\XtremePro\17\Cache\designs\eng \websites\retrowebsites\websitethemes\homestore reported homestore_website.xar, Website, , P,,,,,,744166725 as missing but it then appeared in the download. Perhaps the CRC is wrong.
- Ditto %localappdata%\Xara\XtremePro\17\Cache\designs\eng \websites\singlepagewebsites\cameras\cameras_theme colorscheme_default.xar.
All could be hiccoughs in the servers but #1 does appear to be missing.

Is it any wonder there is distrust of Magix. I updated to XDP16 in August last year and thought I better get my free upgrade to 17 after reading this thread. In Help/About I got this message...
Attachment 126581
... which made me see red! The wording of the paragraph at the bottom suggests that I MUST renew my subscription to get v17 - WRONG! I downloaded the demo, installed it and registered it with my v16 serial number. Bingo!
Is it a language barrier problem, or are Magix trying to trick people into paying more to get something they promised for free? Perhaps they have made their licensing system so convoluted even they can't understand it.
I have raised exactly the same point: https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...765#post621765.
