I keep getting this error, intermittently.
I don't have the file open in any other programme.
In fact, I made sure that nothing else was open.
Any ideas as to why I get this, from time to time?

does it save if you give it another name and/or save it to a different place ?
some folders are restricted eg on system disk
It's not a folder issue.
I save to that folder using XDP11, without ever getting this error.
And it does save if I give it a different name.
Which is not good as there will be loads of files with different names and all that.
I wonder if anyone from Xara will look at this thread?
strictly speaking the fact that you can save to the folder from another program does not mean it is not a folder issue with the program you can't save from ;)
but that said
the next thought is that a background process is using it, which is likely a windows issue or settings outside of Xara; however you could try disabling xara's auto backup which might be conflicting, you never know...
Something to do with the splash screen image you created it looks like. Maybe there is conflict with the default image and the one you created?
I've used different splashscreens for almost all the other versions.
So, why would a splashscreen be causing an issue this time?
In any case, the programme starts successfully every time.
It's when I want to save some work, that the error occurs.
it wont be the spash screen if you are saving the .XAR when you get the error, as the splash screen is an image
did you ever try saving it under the same name to a different place
can you save a file with that name into the folder from ver 11?
is it just the splash screen that causes these errors?
did you make registry changes with one of the programs open?
Steve: It's not the splashscreen that's causing the problem.
I created the splashscreen many days ago and saved in the appropriate location.
It was since yesterday, that this error started to appear.
DPX16 starts every time without any problems.
I try and save a file I'm working on, and every now and then, I get that error. Not all the time.
Saving it in a different folder, as far as I can see, can't tell me and you anything. As I can save it in the same folder as long as I give it a different name.
It's only when I click on the 'Save' icon.
Not the 'Save as' icon.
However, next time it happens, I will try and save in a different folder.
ok well it sounds like a conflict to me - something is not letting you overwrite the existing file when you try to save, and that it likely a windows issue...
I just realised what you said, Gary.
A file you are working on and whatever name you give it, can't have anything to do with the error, surely?
And I have many, many files with 'splashscreen' in the name.
It would be the strangest problem in Xara's history, if a file name is going to give 'save' errors.
...possibly a Read Only file ?
Attachment 124583
The error is nothing to do with the file type or where it's being save.
As you can see from the attached image, the file name is different and the location is different.
Still keeps happening.
I wonder if anyone from Magix/Xara ever looks at these posts?
I don't think so.
Because, if they did, then I'm sure a responsible company would make contact and do something about this error.
Doesn't really inspire confidence, does it?
[EDIT] I've logged onto the Magix website and reported a technical issue. All I can do is hope, now.
its a mystery to me Rik
I assume this is a save to an existing file, not a new save
I hope Xara picks it up
If we're talking the same language, Steve?
Then, if it's a new file and you click on 'Save', then you are asked to give the file a name. To me, that's the same as 'Save as'.
The issue I'm having is with an existing file, where I make some changes/amendments/improvements, then I click on 'Save' and that's when the error appears.
And, as I said previously. It doesn't happen all the time.
And it has never happened with any previous versions.
On the Laptop I'm working on, I have XDP11 and that doesn't throw up this error, and has never done so.
rik - there is a difference between this happening in a new file when you press save and when you try to save a file you have opened and try to save [nothing to do with save as]
yes if it is a new file you have to either accept the default name or give it a specific one, but that is not explicit in the information that you gave, and is not the same as save as because there is no existing file to be overwritten
this is, I am sure, a windows issue not allowing an existing file to be overwritten
when you made changes in the registry you only made changes to the keys I mentioned?
did you disable all the automatic backups in both versions of the program ?
Hi Steve,
….options\CheckAssociations is the only thing I made changes to.
I reasonably confident with the registry, even though I may not know where all the options are.
sure just checking
have you just upgraded from say win 8, to win 10 - that might cause issues
a third-party antivirus/security program might be causing this, especially if you use more than one and or registry checkers/cleaners/tweakers … I'd say just the one [plus windows defender which is built into windows 10] is usually enough, the more you use the more scope for things actually going wrong if they conflict
and it might also be a corrupt/failing drive - you can use chkdsk to check for this:
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...windows-vista/
make sure you back up your drive first
and to check the windows system files in case there is an issue there:
https://www.howtogeek.com/222532/how...dism-commands/
again backup first
This is the reply I've had from Magix:
May I please check with you whether you have already tried to run the program with Administrator rights?
If not please go to start > Control Panel > Program and Features > Uninstall Xara Designer Pro, and then re-install.> After re-installing Xara, before starting it up, right-click on the program shortcut > Run as Administrator and then activate again. This should unlock all the contents.
The end part is a bit confusing to me. It says, "This should unlock all the contents."
I don't remember reporting that any contents were locked?!
Anyway, I'm just about to un-install, re-install and select run as administrator, as suggested.
right click and run as admin is a favourite cure-all on TG too :) - hope it works
Hello Rik!
I have had this solution after upgrading the subscription. With upgrading the
subscription they update things in the content catalogue and some things in
the programfolder. Here was error that changes the attribute on the windows
folder 'Program Files'.
Please check the Attribute of the folder Program Files. To do this:
1. Start the cmd.exe as Administrator
2. Change to the root cd C:\
3. Check the Attribute attrib "Program Files"
4. If it shows C:\Program Files you must change the Attribute of the folder
5. Change the Attribute with attrib R+ "Program Files"
6. Check again the Attribute attrib "Program Files"
7. Now it must show R C:\Program Files
Hope ist works.
Werner
Rik,
Are you saving your file into a folder that is automatically synchronised with a cloud drive service, like Google Drive, DropBox, or OneDrive? I get this problem sometimes when I'm saving big files into my Google Drive folder, and I think it's because the file is being uploaded to the cloud. Waiting a few minutes and trying again works.
