adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
Hey in the latest version here I am adding text say on top of a circle and it gives me an outline around the object or image of light green, and I am not sure how to disable this function. Seems new. Anything I can do to avoid it? I just keep pressing ctrl-z to undo it when it happens.
Thanks!Attachment 121256

Ron, it is the latest, newest Text inside feature. Sadly, despite asking, you cannot disable it.
If you touch any shape while using the Text tool, the shape is immediately transformed into a Text Area wrapping the shape.
Xara makes it all better by letting you right-click and pick Text inside > Select (shape)!?!
Xara then fails to explain you could use Copy and Paste replacing Selection as an escape route.
I have also found that using the Page & Layers gallery, expanding the Text Area and selecting the inside shape and then right-clicking and picking Move to Current Layer, decouples the Text Area and shape; keeping both.
Ctrl+Z gets you out of the hole quite nicely.
Nice one Xara - not.

Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
Hi Ron, this is due to the new feature Text within a Shape or whatever it's called. If you have a shape selected, change to the text tool, and click over the previously selected shape it defaults to Text within a Shape. I don't find this very intuitive & probably confusing to newbies. I'd prefer to select both the text & the shape and have an Arrange / Fit text within Shape option, similar to Fit Text to Curve.

@Egg, do keep up.
Only seconds slower this time!

Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
Far better put than my explanation Acorn. Kludge springs to mind.
Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
What is sad is these kludges are found within hours of launch. The Xara developer (I hope not truly singular) is directed by the Xara designer and the usability is checked by the Xara tester. Kate Moir states this was one of the most asked for user requests. I cannot find any TG Post
Somehow it has morphed into a User Story:
As a Xara Desktop application user
I want to select any shape while using the Text tool
So that I can immediately add Text Inside to a new, enclosing text area that just contains the shape
So we end up with an enforced function where it could have been an elective one solely using the context menu (Add Text Inside).

regedit following ** at own risk, make a backup-copy of your registry before making any changes**
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xara\XtremePro x64\15\Options\TextTool
doubleclick the key : ClickToCreateTextInside and change the value from 1 to 0
Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
Cheers Haakoo and thanks for your suggestion/fix however I'm never happy messing about with the registry and it shouldn't be necessary either.
I prefer to use XaRegEdit created by the Bill Taylor aided by Steve Ledger (Edit: Forgot to add John Horn) to do these things but I don't believe this app is any longer being updated (?). Xara should have long ago produced their own version of Bills excellent app but they seem to prefer this hands off approach.
But more than that, Text inside a Shape is just another kludge, a Bad Bolt-on, a poorly implemented workaround.
Edit: The app seems to still be operative for V15.
Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
Yes Eric,my thoughts exactly about the usage of the registry.
But at least if someone has no need for the text in shape,it's here to find
And yes xara needs to fix,yet again, a pre-assumed feature with no on/off switch(sigh)

Thanks hakoo, not tried it as I am trying to be productive with v15.1 and note where I am not.
In passing, does the Registry change block Text Inside entirely? i.e., right-click context menu.

Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
The RightClick option remains working
When chosen by RightClick it is possible to have it anyway but no way to switch it off by RightClick
When altering yet another regkey : Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xara\XtremePro x64\15\Options\TextTool EnableTextInsideShape
you can switch off the textinshape option altogether.

It is amazing that Xara fails to add UI capability for these features, thinking it knows best.
Looking forward to a long prevarication spell before sanity kicks in.

I find XDP to be like a tropical jungle... there’s lots of cool stuff in there - if you happen to stumble across it. Don’t expect anything to work in a human-logic way though. Oh, and expect lots of intertwined stuff. Pulling on one thing will shake six others
Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
More complaints! I am so so glad I have not upgraded from P&GD11. after watching months of disgruntled members complaints. I will not go into them because you can read thread after thread of users dismay, frustration and anger. Whatever happend to Xara. When I first joined T.g. and using XaraXtreme, it was also simple and straight forward, a brilliant piece of software you downloaded and recieved good updates also if you wanted, purchase the Disc. From what I see now it's like trying to navigate a minefield and what you get does not work so well as well as some things implemented make no sense at all to me. Handrawn said in one of his posts he would not be upgrading untill he sees where Xara or Majix were heading and especially in the vector drawing area which has been sadly neglected, I will do the same, wait and see. There is something terribly wrong when you look on these forums and see it's like an abandoned ship. T.g use to be alive with posts and the XaraXone was humming. Why did Majix mess with the machine.

The should be nothing in the general functioning of the program, that the USER doesn't have total control over. Take the stretching/squashing issue. It was absolutely ridiculous that in a DESIGNER program the program knows better than the designer. If we're not free to use the program to design whatever/however we wish, what's the point of using it.
Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
Sigh yeahhhh so I just have to click outside of any objects when adding new text. Very annoying. What is wrong with the programmers? They should never change defaults because we bought this thing to work a specific way...
Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
Hmm. It only happens when an object has been selected and the text tool is passed over the selected object. It requires two intentional actions to convert the object. I do not find this intrusive, just different. IMHO.

Not quite, there is no hover action to display the green text area. That would be a good visual clue (Sharks ahead!); the cursor does change but it is imperceptible. Designers like to place a text object where they choose. It is now not possible to drag a Text Area that starts on top of a Shape.

Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
"It is now not possible to drag a Text Area that starts on top of a Shape."
I must be missing something. I draw a circle. I unselect it (V). I select Text tool (T). I click inside the circle and type text. I then select the selector tool (mouse, not V), which leaves the text selected and out of editing mode. At this point the circle is not selected, the text is, and there is no green outline. I can drag the text without changing the status of the circle. I am not a full time artist so maybe there is a loss of a shortcut that I am unaware of. Pardon the grammar.
Re: adding text sometimes gives the object behind it a light green outline?
Ok, the green border of the text area only shows that the text area ist empty. It shows also on a normal empty text area.
@DanDelix
You're right, to change the shape to a inside text area, the shape must selected before.
To deactivate we can change the registry entry like in post #7 from HAAKOO. Ok, this could be implemented in the properties.

and so on, and so on …
