Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
As Diep Anh - my colleague at Magix - announced yesterday ( https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...aphic-Designer) we’ve released an update to Photo & Graphic Designer. This is a regular Update Service update but note it won’t be delivered thru the auto-update, you need to download the trial and install it. It’s free if your Update Service is current. You’ll also be able to run the 7 day trial again, even if you’ve done so before since v11.
This is a big update for Photo & Graphic Designer. As you’ll see from Diep Anh’s post we’ve migrated some of the pro design and performance features from Designer Pro (as requested here on TG!), but we’ve also added a new ‘magic resize’ (auto-fit) feature which we hope you’ll find a great time saver. The release notes detail everything that's new @ http://releasenotes.xara.hosting/pho...phic-designer/, and you can download the trial on magix.com (http://www.magix.com/us/xara-photo-graphic-designer/ if you are in the US, click the 'Free Trial' button) or xara.com @ http://www.xara.com/photo-graphic-designer/download/.
Take a look, we'd love to hear your feedback.

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
First thing I notice is the ongoing product identity crisis. :)
Will have a look at both updates today.
-
Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Yes, the product catalog pot has been stirred, and PGD is now part of the family of Magix photo products - so it co-ordinates with them rather than the other Designer titles :)
Look forward to your feedback.

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Hi all,
I've just upgraded to this latest version and appear to have lost the ability to export in PDF format, despite there being an "Export PDF" option. If I try to use it, the program throws up an error "Internal program error 5107.2.fi.gs". Also, if I try to use "Export As..." there is no PDF option in the dropdown list. Also I have found that I can no longer import PSD files despite the help files telling me I can do it!! If I try, I get a message that says "Can't open that file type".
Anybody else getting the same or is it just my installation that's corrupt?

Are you sure you did the "run as administrator"?

I did everything the way I have always done. I've used Xara products for years and never had any issues before. Plus, there should be no need to run the program as an administrator for it to work properly.

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
You only have to do this once so that Windows is instructed by you that, simply put, the software you want to run is trusted and can have access to all resources as needed.

Tried uninstalling and re-running the installer as the administrator. It's still not working. The only thing I can think of is that I installed the 64 bit version but I have Web Designer Premium v.12 in 64 bit and don't have any problems running that. That version doesn't support PDF files but it lets me work with PSD files just fine.

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
What Grace and I suggested was to run the program as administrator and not reinstall it.
Do you have Windows 32-bit and install 64-bit programs?

Yep... tried that too.
I'm running a Windows 8.1 and it appears to support 64 bit just fine. Am going to try installing the 32 bit version this morning but can't see how that is the issue as Web Designer runs just fine, as I said before.
EDIT: Just put my laptop on and double checked. I'm running a 64 bit system (and can remember checking when I put Web Designer Pro on) so I'm not going to try installing the 32 bit version.

Same results here exactly as you've described with update to PGD 64. Ran as administrator after installing and a couple more times since. 'Save as Type', 'Settings', 'Export', 'Cancel' are all non functional in the 'Export PDF' option.
Cannot import PSD via File > Import or drag and drop.

So it's not just me then!! Thank you for posting Julia. I'm actually quite relieved as I couldn't for the life of me work out what I was doing wrong. I wouldn't class myself as a computer whiz but I'm no muppet either!!

Same error code here (with 64-bit version) - just in case you needed any further confirmation!
Attachment 119369
I've also found several old .xar files don't open in the latest update (v15) - I'm just left with a pasteboard. A quick work around so far has been to open in v12 and then export as a .xar file.

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Just about to use it to design a birthday card. Hopefully I won't come across any other issues!!

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
sounds to me like the portring across of designer pro features to this latest release of photo and graphics designer has broken the PDF/PSD export/import
I can't rememnber what PDF features P&G had, but it could certainly import PSD
I now get these same issues too when I try with the new version

perhaps... but this is windows being windows, and is to do with the security permissions and protocol settings on a given computer; it's not a xara issue, just something some people have to do, some of the time

I noticed the flip does not work, at least I do not understand how it works at the moment.

That works fine for me...the exact same way it always has.
The only issue I've come across so far is the PDF/PSD one.

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
I'm not a seasoned PGD user; having only downgraded to 12.7 in June rather than upgrading XDP (or whatever it's called these days). However, I think the update needed more work before release.
In addition to the pdf export and psd import issues, svg, RAW and Word no longer appear on the File > Import list. Drag and drop produces no results attempting to import .svg and produces 'Can't open this file type' error with docx. I didn't test RAW.
svg and psd do not appear on the Export list.
Horizontal/vertical flip work correctly here.

RAW can be imported and edited, but it does throw up a message saying "No filters that were designed for this type of file have been found. The import will continue using the most compatible filter, although the image may not appear as intended."
EDIT: Just noticed that it imports them and the files display just fine, it imports them at a much smaller resolution (1024x768 at 96dpi) despite having the option set to import files at their full size. PGD v.12 reduces my files from 180dpi to 96dpi but they are still at the full resolution of 4000x3000

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Hi,
It sounds very much like none of the filters are registered which would cause the problems you are seeing. 9/10 if you close the program down and then right-clicking the program shortcut > Run as Administrator would fix this.
If this doesn't work then you can try manually registering the filters, this is a little complex to do but I'll try to make it as easy as possible:
1) Close down Xara
2) Go to start, type 'CMD', then right-click on the command prompt app > Run as Administrator.
3) Open the filters folder of Xara, within the installation directory normally located at: C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Photo Graphic Designer\15\Filters\ENG
4) Copy the whole path of the filter, for PSD for example: C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Photo Graphic Designer\15\Filters\ENG\PSDFilter.dll
5) In CMD type:
regsvr32 "[right-click and it should paste the path]"
so it would look like this for example: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Photo Graphic Designer\15\Filters\ENG\PSDFilter.dll"
Attachment 119378
(In my image the path is for the 32 bit version of PGD)
and press enter. You should get a confirmation dialog afterwards that the filter has been registered. The PDF filter is located in the PDFXfilter folder, and is called 'PDFXFilter.dll'.

Try opening Xara and importing / exporting now.
Thanks
Rob

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Sorry to say manually registering the dll files for the PDF and PSD filters didn't work, despite getting the 'successful' message for both. Also, there was no PSDFilter.dll file in the folder. I had to copy it across from v.12, along with a few others that I noticed were missing.
All this said, surely your customers shouldn't be expected to go to such measures to get a program to function properly? I've never even had to tell a Xara product to run as administrator before, let alone try all this malarky.
-
Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
If your missing the filter completely then it would explain why you are getting this error message. These should be installed along with the program, did you get any error messages when installing Xara?
Can you link me the URL you downloaded V15 from so I can see what installer they are using?
-
Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Hi Rob
I can confirm that the regsvr32 routine does not make any difference to the PDF working, and there is no PSD dll file anywhere in the photo and graphic design \15\ subfolder tree
I'd say something is wrong with the installation process
FWIW: right click and run once as administrator brings the program into sync with windows, when windows policies or protocols, [often as modified by a windows update or a third party app - eg AV/firewall], prevent some part of the process from registering correctly first time - it's a local computer issue; and although it does not happen to most of us and I can't remember it happening to me with a xara program, it has with SAI.
that said, althouigh it does fix some issues, it's not fixing this one
I'm running the latest fall creators version of windows 10 pro - ver 1709 build 16299.64 if this helps

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
I had no issues when installing the program, registering it or downloading the content installer.
I installed it twice.
The first download was from within my Magix control panel, and then when that threw up the errors I uninstalled it and then downloaded the trial from here: http://www.xara.com/uk/photo-graphic-designer/download/
What's really frustrating is that my install of v.12 has been reverted back to the Feb 2017 version as I initially followed these instructions on this webpage:
"If you are an owner of the previous versions of Photo & Graphic Designer, you can download the trial below and unlock it with your serial number (you may also need to select 'download content' in the Help menu after unlocking):"
Incredibly misleading don't you think?
I didn't think it would be an issue when I realised what I had done as when I started the program it told me there were updates available. Unfortunately, after downloading this updates I get a message that says I already have the most up to date version on my laptop!
-
Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
EDIT: Rob just seen your last post
I downloaded from here: http://www.xara.com/uk/photo-graphic-designer/download/ - [the trial version as I don't have a current 365 licence, just curious about the latest 'fun packed' features... ;)]
I didn't get error messages either during installation - it was installed clean, once, on a computer OS image that has not had P&G installed before - it is in '7 day' trial mode
-
Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Sorry just looking into this now. Looks like some filters missing from the 64 bit version. If you download the 32bit this *should* include the correct filters. I'm emailing the installation team now.
Apologies for this and thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Will the 32 bit version run ok on a 64 bit system? Or is the 64 bit likely to be fixed any time soon? If so, I'll wait.

Hi Vikas
Looks like it's down to some missing files in the 64 bit version so nothing any of us can do to fix it. I guess we have to wait for Xara to re-upload the corrected installation program. Either that or you can try the 32 bit version which Rob says "SHOULD" have all the files in.

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Yes, you can run 32 bit programs on a 64 bit operating system but just not visa versa.
-
Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Yay! I appear to have a fully working v.15, albeit the 32-bit version!!!
One thing I have noticed is a distinct lack of comments from Xara or Magix, either on the download page and on Facebook, about errors being found in the 64-bit version and an advisory not to install it at this time. Not all of your customers are going to find their way to these forums to find out why their installation isn't working properly.
-
Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
I haven't seen any errors in the program that would prevent anyone using it who didn't happen to need PDF/PSD
not wise either to go around announcing things until you actually know what the ins and outs are I would have thought
-
Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
Yes your are right. I got confused in the discussion.
Anyway, waiting for update from Xara for 64 bit OS. Hope they will resolve it ASAP.

There are other issues too. With exporting as a Word document for example. In the upgrade blurb they mention increased support for documents of this type, so to then have that not work in 64-bit but continue to allow people to download and install it is wrong.
-
Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
what happens if you try to export as 'word document'? - that would be .DOCX ?
-
Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
With the 32-bit version you can import a .docx file and edit it. You can also export to .docx and then open that in Word and edit it. Neither of these options work in the 64-bit version.

This also works seamlessly in v12, 64-bit for Xara Web Designer Premium but fails for v15. It would be 'nice' to find out when the next release is due for XPGD & XWDP.

Re: Photo & Graphic Designer Updated
yes it would :)
re .DOCX ok - but what I said before still applies
however that said, of late, Xara's beta testing does seem to have missed a lot of stuf.... wait! maybe we are the beta testers..>:)
