Hopefully Ivan and some others will dig this thread.
I used XARA when it first came out as a "Band-Aid" for trueSpace and Photoshop pieces that weren't quite right. After all this time, the three apps have become blurred in their outlines.
I'm opening this thread because I think "3D" is in the eye of the beholder. The tubes were drawn in XARA, and not modeled.
Does anyone else have peices that aren't strictly a product of rendering meshes with skin on 'em?
My Best,
Gare

Gary,
I don't have any pieces in 2d that looks like 3d. I simply have not been able to develop the talent to shade and light my 2d drawings in a realistic way.
That is why I found 3d so interesting. I could create something semi-realistic. I am not one that thinks art must be realistic looking to be art. But my taste/admiration goes toward artist who can create such pieces.
The stuff that Steve Newport (hope I got the name right) does in Xara blows me away. Some of it looks better than I can create will a 3d app.
2d, 3d or whatever it is the final art that I love not how it is made. I admire the talent of 2d, 3d, tradtional and digital artist. But I must admit I admire a 2d artist that can create works that look 3d the most.
Good job!

Hi Randy--
Yup, Steve Newport has got his eye(s) trained so well it is indeed difficult sometimes to tell his work from a "real" mesh model.
Drawing in 2D to achieve a 3D effect is not simple, however; that has not been my experience, at least. This piece took me a good two days using XARA.
Any other people? http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

lots of stuff that could fit this thread!
The one I attach was drawn in Xara X and it was a study trying to work with both 2d and 3d elements in the same drawing. I was trying to get each kind of element to inform the dimensionality of the other.

Hi Gary,
You are very adept in many apps.
I have a few pics made in Xara that may fall into this catagory.

Neat idea Gary, and I must confess I really don't have too many 2D worx which would fall into this category... this leaves me scratching my head in what I should create for this thread... I will have to get back to you on this one... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
great worx each of you... the orange has made me hungry/thirsty... the cup is now full of coffee and sitting on my desk, what a very nice candle there S, and those poweroutlet face plates are simply divine there Gary... [thumbs up all of you]

that's a lot of times my goal in creating pieces in Xara. But most of the stuff I've learned has come from reading or interacting in a digital 3D world. You definitely shouldn't limit yourself, or at least your knowledge, to one type of media or application. Every bit of info and experience will help you in the long run.

Hey nice stuff everybody!
Great thread too Gare, thanks.
I too have tons of stuff that fits this topic. I don't usually have much of a problem creating a 3D illusion using a 2D app. In fact, i 'seem' to have an aptitude for it. Don't really know why. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
I'm posting just 2 here, but i have a lot more in my gallery. So if anyone's interested further, i suggest you head over there. The images would eat up too much space here. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/eek.gif
This first one is an interface design, done using Xara 2; back in 2000. This is a low-res copy.

And this is an image i created, also with Xara 2, for a DJ friend of mine. It's the record player he always wanted, but never got.
I used some photos for visual reference, but i didn't trace over them. I just used my eyes, from scratch. I don't mind saying, i'm quite proud of this one because in the end it came out better than i'd hoped. Took about a week, working a little each night on it.
It looks great as a full-sized desktop image.
Sorry for the larger file size, but Jpg compression has killed the quality a lot here. I had to stop at 50%.
PS: oh and i forgot i wanted to add that the one thing i'm really NOT impressed about with Xara is how it just canNOT render clean tight-looking text at smaller sizes. That's always been a thorn in my side. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

These 2 are Photoshop, before I had 3D actual. The leaf is airbrushed and the Mech is a patchwork of textures and gradients.

Great thread thanks Gary for starting it.
Ross,Steve,Soquili, gidgit,Mark & kiwi ya'll have some great examples. Thanks for sharing, I for one can say I have really enjoyed looking at these.
I will post something just to contribute, but it is not 3d looking. the Candlestick is about the only thing that could possible look 3d.

I see a lot of great work here. Steve naturally, and the truntable by Mark is exquisite. You can't find them record spinners any more, can ya? My kid brother bought me a Panasonic years ago which does not look as good, but it spins my collection of 33's fine.
Here's a sort of extruded Fleur DeLis. XARa, natch'.

We seem to be fascinated with them Macintosh gelatin buttons, both on Mark's site and here.
I think this whole thing started with someone discovering AutoF/X's DreamSuite Gel filters for Photoshop!
Here's a variation of them that I'm using on my site. XARA, again.

Stu i really like that optical illusion one. That's looks really cool.
And Chuck that's a classic example of what vector graphics are all about -- clean lines, and a solid looking effect. Very nice. I myself have a hard time creating images that come across visually like that. Not sure why... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/confused.gif
Hey that's a great one Gare. Similar to some of the stuff i've seen ya do with Xara 3D. Cool colour scheme too.
Ok this thread has really started to get my blood flowing about this subject. So now i'm just going to unload a few more and stopw there. hahaa This COULD go on forever! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
All of the following were done using only Photoshop.
First one up is a CD Jewel Case.

A chrome ball with some environmental effects.
This one and the other glass ball effect were originally created to show someone on a Photoshop board i visit that these types of effects are indeed capable with only Photoshop, if you put in the time to really learn the program.
Note: it's a replication of a 3D image created/used on a Website called "whowe.com". They used 3DMax and Flash. So i take no credit for it's design.

I have this space scene with black hole I did entirely in PhotoImpact and used no 3d shapes

Wow, amazing work from everyone. Sorry I can't contribute, I used to use Xara quite a bit but I kind of "unlearned" the app from a lack of use. Now I open it and try to remember what I used to do with it! You guys have some really nice stuff here.
Mark, and everyone, that "whowe" site is simply amazing. I've simply never seen a more amazing combination of 3D and Flash. The thing is, I can't find the site anymore?? Does anyone (Mark) know what happened to it? I remember the guy who designed the 3D for the site posted in CGTalk, but I can't seem to find the post.
Anyways, nice work guys.

Sorry bout that! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Ya isn't it odd how a lot of the 3D artists here also do a lot of 3D stuff with a 2D app also? I find that an interesting tidbit.
Nice additions too everyone! http://boards.infopop.net/infopop/icons1/icon14.gif
