Difficulty selecting text
I've just opened a page I deigned last week on a different machine (just loaded the software onto it). It looks fine, but when I try to select text to edit it each word seems to occupy its own text box. I'm used to using ctrl/shift/end for example to select a whole section, or shift/down arrow for a selection, or even that newfangled idea, the mouse, but none of these work. I can only select a word or two, and a red line appears under the selection. What am I doing wrong please?

Best attach the xar/web file :)

Re: Difficulty selecting text
Really? are you saying that you can select text easily, and the images flow?
Re: Difficulty selecting text
Well what I'm finding is a dog's breakfast.
You have a NavBar where all the text is the same colour as the buttons on both layers.
You have the NavBar way off the actual page will a pile of text that is 28/12 pt and bold to boot.
You then have two clones of the text block that are overlapping and almost all on the page.
If there are images, they're not in this design file.
All the text is selectable: double-click picks a word; triple-click, the paragraph and quadruple-click the block.
Click-drag across the text select the range of text.
Ctrl+A, the block.
All when using the Text tool.

Re: Difficulty selecting text
Try the attached.
As Acorn so indelicately pointed out, everything was somehow way off the page and there was some duplicate text on the actual page. I added a background color to make it easier to see the page. And for my taste, the text looks cleaner without the bold face.
Re: Difficulty selecting text
Indelicate! Moi?
I'll try to be less heavy.
You have a 74 x 80 px image from a 10MB master file and the end result is illegible.
The master itself is a scan that has had no cleaning up and would be vastly improved if you recreated a vector version of it.
Doing so would mean that the represented logo would render far better for the end user in their browser.
Do not rely on what you see in your Xara design page, it always has to face the light of day in as many browsers and devices as possible.
Xara makes this far easier than more other applications that I have had to use so do spend a little more time in designing your pages.
Do not try and correct your page, start afresh and break it into stages: NavBar, Logo, Text: font, size, alignment. Aim for an overall balance.
Is the font in the logo, the text block and the NavBar all the same with the same weight of correct emphasis and so on.
Only when you understand the harmony of the page's element, can you call it a design

Re: Difficulty selecting text
Garys file still has each word in individual spans.
I've cleaned the text up here so it doesn't have individual spans for each word, just each line of text.
Re: Difficulty selecting text
By the way, I changed the text by selecting it and applying Normal Text to it. This removes the line/word break-ups and you can change Normal Text to suit.
Re: Difficulty selecting text
Well between all us old folk, we have cleared up the issue.
The question is, how did things go so far off the rails? Was the text imported from a PDF?
Egg - I am not sure what you are referring to. I found three sets of body copy, two overlapping on the page and one floating well above the page on the pasteboard. But I did not have any problems selecting the text, or double, triple, or quadruple clicking to select a word, line, or entire paragraph. Near as I can tell, the text was in one text area. Ctrl A selected the entire block of copy.

Re: Difficulty selecting text
Here's a logo version. No drop shadow like the original has--but it shouldn't had it especially at the size it is.
This logo will work at the size of the on in the .web file, which is about the same size as on the present web site for the organization. If it was to be used in a larger size much larger than perhaps double the size, the drawing should be worked on.
As well, the font is different, though close and likely fine at this size. I couldn't identify the font from the present logo with the drop shadow and crude from the scan.

The reason the words have individual SPANs is the block of text is fully justified. This is normal and nothing about it is wrong. Setting the text to left, centred or right justified allows lines to be in SPANs as all the glyphs are calculated from a datum point so positioning is fully calculated by the browser rendering engine. Xara gets itself into this "problem" as it attempts to apply WYSIWYG to text paragraphs, causing all this fragmentation for full justification and the breaking up of URLs across words and line breaks.

Re: Difficulty selecting text
Acorn - That was my thinking but just before I fell into a deep sleep, there was something in Egg's epic video that implied after applying a Normal Text style to the text that it became blocks of text, though upon awakening and trying this for myself, it still appeared to be as before.
That said, is brocsman is still here and has not run screaming into the night, if you take the text tool and highlight the text in your first button, and change the color the text color will change on all of the buttons.
Re: Difficulty selecting text
Thanks for the clarification Acorn :) I never use justified text. This explains why changing the text to Normal Text removes this issue as it's left aligned text.
Re: Difficulty selecting text
Thanks guys. I know it's a complete mess. I've never used a tool like this before, and I must find time to watch some tutorials. I shall work through your files, comments and advice, and I'll try not to come back until I know a bit more about what I'm doing.
Thanks again.
Re: Difficulty selecting text
Hope we were helpful. We all have done similar things and worse. Much worse. It is like learning a new language. You will learn. And we are always here to help.

No worries! Do come back if there are any questions at all. There's good people that have, and can, give great advice on the web stuff (not me. I'm just a graphics junkie).

Don't worry, we have all been there. I truly found an aha! moment with the application(s) and took off from there. You'll son be the same,
