A 3D modeling Challenge
Ron Duke had made an ambiguous comment about "mesh" over here on this thread, and almost as if it were magic, 40,000 members posted with the same mislead conclusion I myself had. That Ron wanted to know about modeling...when actually the mesh he was referring to was the Color Mesh filter you use instead of a gradient tool in Illustrator.
But that spawned a thought in Mike Bailey's head: The 3D Graphics area isn't in hibernation—modeling folks just need a central place to gather that's of interest.
So how about this: we hold a semi-regular theme based Competition right here (or wherever the Mode prefers)?
I've got two ideas right from the start for a Competition theme. I think any modeler/renderer should be qualified, and perhaps if in the future a theme is broad enough, we should encourage animations.
1. Create a play on words. Take a phrase and make it literal. How about a "housefly"? Or a "fruitfly"? Or a "treehouse"? Gere, I've done a poor job of creating a literal pun from the word "Cowgirl."
Attachment 113372
You get the idea? If not, ask Igor.
2. Create artwork for a music album. I come from a time before fire was invented, and music was written to round pieces of vinyl, which came in there spectacularly decorated 13" square pieces of printed cardboard, taped together.
Then there was the Music CD jewel case insert, and although these guys measured only 4¾" square, they could still be breathtaking in their cover art work.
So I sort of miss this type of illustrative artwork, and very few of the millions of collections took advantage of 3D art because the "music album cover" imploded as an Art form in about 1980, before the invention of the Mac Classic.
That was a joke. Sort of.
Attachment 113373
This was a past project I had on hand, and it's not a good example of my proposed competition, but it works, doesn't it? I use Xara Designer a lot to put the finishing touches on a rendered 3D idea.
Thoughts?
C & C?
My Best,
Gare

Re: A coule of thoughts about a 3D COMPETITION
Hello Folks, First I want to thank Gary for getting this started.
My Idea for the challenge is a bit different. What I had in mind for anyone wanting to participate is to visit Xara Xone tutorial archive.
http://archive.xaraxone.com/html/tutorials.html
http://site.xaraxone.com/tutorials/
Pick one of the tutorials and model the object illustrated. The only rule is you have to make a 3D model, use any 3D software you have, you can also use Xara or any other software you want to make UV maps, decals, backgrounds, etc. There is no limit, post a wireframe or a full blown scene, just do it and have fun. I think this will be a good way to get started if your new to 3D or a good exercise for those folks with experience who want to practice there modeling skills. If you need help just ask, I'm sure someone will be here to assist.

Re: A coule of thoughts about a 3D COMPETITION
Let's go with your idea, Mike, happily!
I'm sure you've flattered at least 50% of the Garys who worked the Xone.
Um, should there be a limitation here that you probably don't want to model something I did that is a model to begin with?
Or would you like to leave the modeling work I did up for re-interpretastion?
Probably a good idea, because I had a definite time limit in which I could spend doing a lot of the content.
Ready, steady, go?

Yes I think that would be ok as long as you don't mind.

Re: A coule of thoughts about a 3D COMPETITION
I think this id a great idea, particularly for someone like me who wants to learn to model in 3D but has never invested the time to learn the software. Sure I have spent a lot of time watching tutorials and messing with Blender but can I really do it? No! Now maybe I'll get off my rusty dusty and do it, maybe with Blender or something else such as Art of Illusion which Gare recommended in another post. I know it will take time to learn but oh well I have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Re: A coule of thoughts about a 3D COMPETITION
Larry, its good to see you joining the challenge, start with something simple and you will do fine. Hint: Some of those tutorial objects can be modeled with simple 3D primitives (cubes, sphere's, cones etc...) Kinda like your shapes challenge. Take your time and have fun. :)

I will create something later today if can kick myself away from TV.

I chose the same one but this is little different and not an exact copy. (Would be hard to beat the one already posted.)
Not completely finished and needs adjusting here and there.

This is a great initiation, I think the most beneficial would be for everyone as theinonen posted, so showing some stages of his working process and by that hints for others, who would like to complete the same.
I selected the Rubik's cube tutorial from http://www.xaraxone.com/tutorials/mar10/, also registered the steps in Blender if someone is interested

I love Windows 10 so much.
Was working on rendering the stuff, when this awesome operating system restarted itself without a warning. Back to starting grid then and when I finally managed to set up everything again and was ready to press the render button... program error, software will be closed.
Simple things really should not be this hard.

A 3D Modeling Challenge
Gary Priester did a tutorial on how to draw French fries in a commercial fast food sleeve. I think it's the best illustration I've seen in commercial art to promote/show off a product, so naturally the only way to interpret his work in the September 2011 tutorial using non 2D tools is to get a little playful with the fries.
This is a WIP: I need to add ketcup, as Gary P. did. But I did manage to feature all the salt they put on the fries at America's Favorite Scottish Restaurant, and I'll try to simulate grease after adding the condiment:

GP's September 2005 tutorial, "Keep your eyes on the road"
The models you all have done look great. Its OK to do as many as you want.
Gary's fries are making me hungry, I'll have a quarter pounder to go.
I did a steps for those of you who want to see such a thing.

Re: A 3D Modeling Challenge
Your models and rendering are awesome, thanks for showing

Re: A 3D Modeling Challenge
You guys have inspired me to update my copy of Blender and while my modeling skills are rusty and I never was a great 3D modeler I'm going to have a go at a simple one.

Re: A 3D Modeling Challenge
Sorry to disappoint you, Mike, but we ran out of Quarter Pounders at noon. A big busload of Trump campaigners pulled in, and both of them wanted fifty-five Quarter Plunderers each.
It would have been nice if they'd paid for them, but fortunately I was able to nuke a Big Mac I had in the freezer. Gary P. did a stunning tutorial, very nicely done Velveeta, Gare, here, in Autumn 2012.
Lettuce was a monster of an endeavor. I had to subdivide the daylights out of a plane and then use a Turbulence filter using noise as the seed in C4D. Looking back, I should have applied some translucence and Subsurface Scattering, but I'm not getting paid to do this.
That was a joke.
Render is out of modo, Flame Painter was handy to create the smoke. P'shop to warm up the burger (beyond what I'd done in the microwave) using the updated Nik's Color fx gaggle of filters Google gave away, and is still giving away Today we're giving away Nik for the next three months :)

Re: A 3D Modeling Challenge
Someone might find Gary's Apple logo tutorial on link http://www.xaraxone.com/tutorials/jan09/, for that summarized a small sheet how to export the Apple logo as symbol from Xara to Blender in .svg format:
Attachment 113458
The +6 small tips are just my investigations for questions 1) the imported object arrives too small :), then 2) its center is not in the mass, 3) it is imported as curve, so need to be mesh, 4) it arrives with a lot of triangle faces, so how to simplify, 5) it is flat so should be extruded and 6) one face can be not enough for bevelling, so can be worth to create inset faces.
As I find bevelling such .svg object can be quite tricky depending on the shape, so surely more small tips would be needed :D

Have you tried exporting to Illustrator (*.ai) file format. Will your modeling program import them?
I lathed the bun parts in Post #19. I exported the paths from Xara. No problems at all.

Re: A 3D Modeling Challenge
Thanks Gare for the advice, basically there seems no issue with the export/import itself from Xara to Blender. Anyway in Xara yes selected this Adobe option:
Attachment 113460
This issue is rather at the bevelling attempt concretely, because there the vertices are quite ugly as cummulating there in the orange marked area and not being smooth at all :D
Attachment 113461
Sure that is some trick in Blender, but did not find the answer yet
-
Re: A 3D Modeling Challenge
csehz,
Can you send me the AI file. You have my home address, send it there.
I think the control points are messing you up. Where there are 5, thethere should be one.
I'll try to extrude it with a soft bevel and send it back to you with both the AI I'll do and an OBJ of the extrude, okay?

Re: A 3D Modeling Challenge
Gare thanks I have just sent the .svg file, because as default I can not import .ai file to Blender (anyway probably that is just enabling question of an add on)
Yes briefly sure some manual manipulation is needed on the vertices, for example where there is that narrow angle in the Apple logo, there has to be a manual triangle as face
Attachment 113464
Will play with it yet but after expecting to create beautiful inset faces on the top, by that the bevel should be also beautiful then :)

Ok here is my humble 3D water molecule. I know it needs a lot of improvement but considering I haven't touched a 3D modeling program in at least 3 years and I am at a beginner level I'm Ok with this.
Edit: I did do a little compositing in DP365
