Thailand street scene, Bangkok
One of my brother's wife is Thai. He's been back to Thailand with her on a number of occasions to visit her family. He asked me if I could draw one of those really long tuk tuks as he thought they were really neat. So, rather than just drawing the tuk tuk itself, I put my foot in it and committed to a street scene; totally fabricated of course. I've been using different online photos to get a feel for what different streets look like there in Bangkok. I settled for drawing a suburb street as the inner city is too modern. Anyway, here's the start of it...

Cool, Ron!
Can't wait to see it finished.

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
It's a 3 wheeled Yang G'dang :D
Which, in the UK is a 50cc motorcycle with the silencer baffle removed (with a wood chisel) adorned with vertical scrapes down both sides, one mirror missing (if present the other one is broken) commonly seen being ridden by a spotty "yoof" late at night doing about 35mph in first gear.

Gary, the vehicle in the front of the pic is a tuk tuk, one form of taxi in Thailand. There are a number of styles, but this is probably the most familiar version in Bankok. It isnt finished. But I have to draw another one like it except that it will be much longer. Im doing my best to use perspective, but vehicles have lots of curves and angles that make them a greater challenge than say a building.

Well, the first of two tuk tuks is completed. Also, a little motor scooter, of which there are a lot over there.
This is going to take a while because the second tuk tuk is much longer with many more seats that have to be done to perspective.

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
I can already tell I'm going to like this one, Ron.

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
Looks like a lot of work for you Ron but looking forward to seeing the completed work.

Ok. Got the seats in the long tuk tuk. Still, I have a lot of trim to do and also the cloth top has to be finished.
After this tuk tuk is done, then it's time to work more on the background, which when done, will be blurred somewhat to give it the further perception of distance. (I hope).

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
Looking great, Ron.
It'll be wonderful to see the completed piece. Love the wire-frame in-progress screen shots!

Thanks Mike.
One thing I've learned about myself in these projects is that I keep making the same mistakes, having to go back and correct things, sometimes two or three times. (I'm a mental midget, you know) I've also learned that when dealing with perspective, there are NO short cuts. At least I haven't discovered any; not with complex drawings of this nature. Here's a wireframe of everything drawn so far...

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
Looks great so far Ron. Like Mike I am looking forward to seeing the final.

Thanks Larry and Mike.
Here's the long tuk tuk completed. Since my last posting I had decided that, even though I was near completing the long tuk tuk, it just wasn't right as regards its width. That is in respect to the photos I've looked at and used as guides. Soooooo, I NEARLY redrew the whole thing, and I'm glad I did...
I'm working on one of those bicycle taxis now, in the background.

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
From what I see, the perspective looks great Ron. You are getting to be a master of perspective, I can tell you have learned a lot. Looks like wen'll be taking be taking leessons from you.

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
Ron - Are you using foreshortening? I remember from years ago in perspective drawing class there was also a method of making sure there was no distortion by defining a circular area. But I would hard pressed to tell you any more than that.
-
Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
Thanks Larry.
Gary, No. I don't know foreshortening. If someone is able to dumb it down (waaay down), maybe I can use it.

Put the bicycle taxi in. Had to draw it twice as the program crashed and the file went to zero bytes. Good thing I'm saving this periodically with the same file name plus a numeral after it. I'm on #25 right now.

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
That's a lot of points. I bet your computer is taking awhile to redraw that too. That was the advantage of drawing perspectives by hand. Nor one computer crash.

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
That's looking good, Ron.

Larry: Well, funny thing is, it's not a problem so far. The redraw is doing just fine.
Graham: Thank you, sir.
Here's a lot more detail added, but still more to come...

Glad to hear that. I can't wait to see the finished product.

I've added some more people, but with all the lines you can't really see them. I'm nearing the end of this, but I have to say I'm not as excited with the end product as I had hoped I would be.
However, it was a learning process, so I'm glad about that.:)

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
Well, we'll be excited for you instead.
Looking great from my vantage point.

hseiken, here it is. Sorry I forgot. The background has been slightly blurred.

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
I think you're really onto something with these street scenes, Ron. Very nice piece of work.

Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
Love it Ron. Just wondering though about a curb behind the tuk tuks and motor scooter. Is it there and am I just not seeing it. Maybe you don't want one there, I don't know, your choice.
-
Re: Thailand street scene, Bangkok
Thanks Larry. It's there, just really hard to see.
