This month the letter is Q.
The last one was an experiment. Cannot locate J and L anywhere so cannot make a complete set.

Just screams out to me Larry:
Good one Egg. Dare I ask who is that a photo of?
It's Desmond Llewelyn, the actor who played Q in the James Bond films Larry.....
That's clever, Egg.
This is a home-made "Q" framed in a matching design that the sharp-eyed among you will see is made using Larry's current Scribble.
The background texture inside the frame is made from a three-colour fill.
Bob.
Very good Bob. That could even be submitted as a scribble.
I'll be calling Q......uuuu
Not sure , I may have lost it here, but Q always goes with U. Nothing to do with drop capitals though so I'm probably way off topic :)
I don't understand why Q and U go together Egg, but, you can do it however you see fit. Good work though.
Larry, the list of words where there is a different letter than 'u' following a 'Q' is pretty short. I assume that's what Egg is referring to.
Mike
Mike, sorry to be such a "numb node" but I still fail to get the connection. If it were an F instead of a Q hen I might. :p Not that it isn't a nice drop cap, because it is, that's not what is giving me trouble, I just don't get the connection. Oh woe is me. If it is a reference to Star Trek's Q tnen I might.
The connection is simple Larry. There are very few words in the English language where a Q is not immeadiatly followed by a U:Quote:
I just don't get the connection
Quick
Quiet
Quilt
Quiz
Quack
Quiver
Quality
Etc
Try to think of any word starting with Q that isn't immeadiately followed by U :)
Thanks for clarifying that Egg, so Mike was right. However forgive me if I take exception to the use of two letters. I guess the way you are looking at it is replacing the first two letters rather than the first.
Maybe you are setting a new trend.
I was going to use a font for this, Black Oak Std. Perhaps my copy is a poor copy, but the "Q" was wonky, so I redrew it in XDP10. I liked the tail of the "Q" and the overall feel to me seems a bit old-western.
I used Filter Forge to make the Cartoon Wood background (default preset) with a flat brightness transparency for a painted-on look.
Bob.
Interesting Bob. I like it. You know, the more I find out about Drop Caps the more I realize how effective a single copital letter can be. But I have always liked the colorful ornate ones, so that's what I do. Granted I use a real font and mnipulte it in some way, right or wrong I don't know but that's usually what I do. The snow man O was completely origional though.
Okay, having totally confused Larry with my previous effort, here's one that should be slightly less difficult to grasp :)
OK Egg, get this one. A Morse code Q's on a Q. Good one.
A simple one from me!
Spot on Larry.
I named this attachment "God Save The Queen" as it was a way of learning morse code phonetically. So "God Save The Queen" related to dah dah de dah.
P: In a similar way "A Poor Poor Pip" related to de dah dah de
J: "A Large Jam Jar" related to de dah dah dah
L: "A Leath er ing" related to de dah de de
Sorry, totally off topic though.
Good one Rik.
Egg I used to know Morse code very well but have forgotten most of it now, so I had to look it up to see if I was right.
I remember some of my friends in the USMC were online for practice. One of the things they sent was "Bens best bent wire" That one definitely had a rhythm of dah dit dit dit kind of thing that made it real easy.
When I was up for my Second Mates certificate we had to do exams in both audible & visual signaling. The audiable wsa far easier to pick up due to the audio rythms which weren't so simple to decypher on the visual range such as a signal sent on an Aldis lamp.
Congratulations to iamtheblues. His Drop Cap was shown in all it's glory in this month's Outsider. This makes 2 months in a row that one of our contributors Drop Caps has been recognized. So thank all of you for making this a successful challenge. But we are not done yet, we still have several letters to go. Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with for the remainder of this particular challenge.
Thank you Bob for your outstanding Drop Cap. As pointed out in the outsider you not only did a great Drop Cap but also combined this months scribble into your design. Way to go, what an inspiration, you have given us all something to strive for.
Aw shucks, it wuz nuthin'...thanks Larry. ;)
Bob.
Hi all
Haven't been around for a while but here's my take on the letter 'Q' :)
Attachment 109705
This is a "where the hell are we" Q :D
Stygg
Good stuff here :)
I had to do this one, it was to simple not to, it's a child's pictograph.
EDIT: Source photo
Nice one Egg and seeing as your second mate, can you set course for these coodinates Latitude: 31°13.3332′ N
Longitude: 121°27.4836′ E across the Q chart, not been there for some time. :D
Stygg
Never got to Shanghai when I was deep sea Stygg. China was not a place to go 65-75 era. There was a Blue Funnel ship which was stuck in Shanghai for many months with the crew constantly being bombarded by the thoughts of Chairman Mao in chines over speakers day & night. Hong Kong & Pusan (now Busan) was the nearest I got mainland China.
Thanks for your reply Egg, your mention of the Blue Funnel Line brought back many memories of the British Merchant Shipping Fleets of yester year, Harrison Line, Bibby Line, Cairn Line and three I was so familiar with, Manchester Liners, Prince Line and two of my favorite ships, Pacific Stronghold and Pacific Norwest, ahh those were the days. I'll leave it at that before Larry tells me off for going well off topic. :D
Stygg
Nice ones mhjgkane, Stugg, amd Egg.
Yes you are off topic but I find the conversation interesting.
The only place I got to in China was Hong Kong, we were only there for one day so didn't get to see much.
Interesting that Egg in Navy (Royal Navy?), Stygg in Merchant Marines, Rik was in the Royal Navy, me US Marines. Those are the only ones I know at present,
No Larry, I was in the Merchant Navy, not the grey funnel line ;) Not to wander off topic I'll redirect Stygg to HERE It's either a British India or Harrison Line vessel in the background. When ships were ships!
Thinks Egg.
EDIT: To show my ignorance Egg, what is the Merchant Navy,
What I suppose you call the Merchant Marine. Cargo vessels (tankers, freight ships, ferries, cruise ships etc) , not vessels of war (like battleships, cruisers, destroyers, carriers, subs etc), although they always end up in the deep stuff ;)
Thanks Egg.
