This is my first time back to the forums in a very long time. The new house is finished (except for landscaping) and we are enjoying the country life. Still no snow here yet. I've yet to experience a Prince Edward Island winter.
I hope all of you have been well. It is going to take me a long time to get through all the posts since my last visit! Where I live high-speed internet isn't available. Living with dial-up after a few years with a cable modem is really difficult.
Regards, Ross

Ross! Old buddy, glad to hear you're alive and well! I've wondered what happened to you. I, too, live in the country side with no broadband, so welcome to the club! But I have a client in town fifteen minutes away, and I go and work there several days a week, where I have a good, fat connection - so I manage. And then I come home to my puny modem.

Welcome to Prince Edward Island Ross! One thing you'll learn about PEI is that the winters aren't as long as the spring! I live across the river from Charlottetown and have a wonderful view of ships going in and out of the Charlottetown harbour and the bright lights of the 'big' city. I guess I'm lucky to be able to live in the country and be able to get high speed internet access too here on PEI! It would be terrible listening to the BBC's Radio nan Gaidheal (Scottish Gaelic)on dialup...
This is my first time back to the forums in a very long time too - long recovery from back surgery.

Would you mind posting a crude sketch or two to the design?
The depth of the house in no more than one room.
What type of roofing was applied to the area of above porch? With a minimal pitch and in that harsh winter climate would it require a "special" treatment?
Curiously :-}, John
Hi Guys!
Good to hear the Wheelbrat has returned to the Island. I thought you went West?? From Mermaid I too see the lights of the big city.
Klaus -- any snow where you are yet?
John -- The house isn't really as narrow as it looks in the pic. The narrow end is the stair. In an earlier posting in the 3d graphics forum I posted some early design info. What is built is similar -- the usual evolution happened during development of the construction drawings. The elevated deck has a 'Duradeck' membrane system on it. It is a 60 mil reinforced pvc membrane that has a non-slip texture. We'll have to be careful that the legs of the patio furniture don't ever punch holes in the membrane! The deck is sloped 1/4" in a foot. I'm not sure how much snow the 10'x40' deck will catch. Hopefully not much because I'll have to shovel it off! (Not because of the weight, more to avoid water backing up behind the wall shingles).

Great to hear from you. Glad to see your settling in and ready to take up the mantle http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I've only just got Broardband, and after 4 weeks couldn't do with out.
Post a photo of the house in the first snowfall.

Nice to see you back. We needed your calm and decent nature here quite often lately, thanx you are back before Christmas at least! ;-)

Cool looking house. I wonder who the architect was http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Thanx Guys!
With my wife and I both trained as architects there was the potential for divorce. Actually things went very smoothly with practically no arguments. I've attached an interior view to show that the house isn't really so skinny.

Nope, no snow here, just rain - it's very warm, actually.

Thanks Gary! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif I spent about 6 weeks in New Zealand this year---it's every bit as beautiful and the people as friendly and wonderful as you've probably heard. I felt like it was a home away from home. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif I took a lot of photos and since returning have been learning several new aps---I have PS CS now and I love it to death! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif I also have been playing with Cinema 4D and Poser5 as well...so, some things I've posted here I put over in the regular Gallery as they used aps other than Xara. I'm glad to see Xara is still in the running though, it is the easiest to use for vectors hands down. I seem to have an affinity for PS though and find myself using it for everything and amazed at what can be done with it. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Here's a pic of me in New Zealand at the Moeraki Boulders beach on a winter day---but it was a great one! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Yes Ross, my wife & I did go out west - to Kamloops, British Columbia. She has been working on her degree but unfortunately I had to return in the summer for a 'medical experiment' on my back over in Halifax. Loved living in the Rockies, and especially working in all those different and extraordinary carving materials indigenous to the province. Over 40 different native trees and they even have deposits of jade but a very definite lack of the red soil and the salt air! Something about the "Red Isle" that always beckons... well that, 7 kids and a bunch of grandchildren.
Since Charlottetown is such a small city and there's a good chance we'll run into each other sometime and being the more recognizable... keep your eyes open for an old dude wearing a dirty old cowboy hat and riding a wild wheelchair, sometimes with a Chihuahua 'guide' dog or as one of my boys calls it a 'hood ornament'! It'd be nice to say hello in person and welcome y'all to the Island!

Hi Ross !!!
I am partly outside Xara X these times, working hardly at a project many times reported in 3D.
You were lacking and we were a little bit anxious.
How are your experients with S'ketchup? http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I really like them.
Do you know the brand, model and possibly if they are sold in the USA and by whom?
Richard - Thanks! I recently read all the stuff at your website. Your life story should be made into a movie! (Who would you like to play you?). Very inspiring that, through it all, you remain a very nice fellow.
Maya - Next time you go somewhere exotic can you take us all with you? By-the-way those boulders look like petrified eggs.
Wheelbrat - I've seen your pic someplace before. If I ever spot you I'll be sure to come over and introduce myself.
Ivan - I use SketchUp quite regularly. Almost all my SketchUp models still get postprocessed in Xara. I'll have to check out the3d forum and what you've been up to.
John - I assume you are refering to the low-voltage cable lights. We ordered online from IKEA so they should be available worldwide. Quite reasonably priced. Our electrical contractor had never seen anything like them (a sheltered soul) and refused to install them for fear of screwing it up. We ended up doing it ourselves and it was very easy.

the Ikea website (for the US and Canada). Can you paste the link or list the model #?
Thanks, John
P.S. Ikea has a store in Seattle (3 hours drive). I may have to go up there after Xmas and check the showroom out ... I've heard from a couple people it is supposed to be pretty slick.

Heh, yea, I've been told that by many. Unfortunetly it's all true and I had to leave allot out or I would have an online book. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Thanks for the nice sentiment. The feelings mutual! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif As for who would play me........ hmmm......... I always liked Andy Garcia or Alec Baldwin. John - I looked at the USA site but couldn't find them. On the Canadian site I found them here. That $20 price is in Canadian dollars. It is about $1.20 in US dollars. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif It notes the need to use 5 fixtures per cable system. We found that number far too busy for ceiling and have only three installed -- we have two 18' systems for a total of six fixtures covering living/dining. I assume we'll sacrifice bulb life by not having the recommended connected load. We have the pair of systems installed with two-way switching. One of the switches is an appropriate slide dimmer.
I suspect if you called Ikea they can supply you with the same ones.

There's a fun idea, Ross, the TG group on vacation in exotic lands...all aboard! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Bring your cameras and laptops and sketchpads, most comfortable attire and thirst for adventure! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/eek.gif (depending on locale maybe the bug spray too haha)...or you can journey with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and that most useful item---a towel! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
