I can see the text is messed up indeed! As for the responsiveness, the page doesn't change when I 'restore down' my browser, did you change the design for the variant?
Is the text for the full size version messed up as well?
And I assume that you have a backup copy that will work in a previous version of WD?
I can see the variant site but it does not look like you have contained your information to the page width.
The text in both the full size site and the variant is shared, as are the photos. If you change the text content on one version it will change it on the other. But I have no idea why the text would be so small in the full size site.
Yeah it is all messed up on the full size version. I did create a mobile variant but changing elements and text on the mobile must have also changed it on the full size as well, so when it was uploaded everything was messed up. Today I'll reload my backup and start over. What a major pain this is I gotta admit. Not at all what I was expecting.
Thanks guys.
When I try to load in Chrome, I get a very quick flash of red, then I can only see the background of the site which I would say is a large problem. When I load in IE i see the site but when I load the pages away from the first screen the text size is minute too difficult for me to read. In the text area there seems a lot of white space and if the site is responsive that must be the area where it is reducing the text size downwards but I could be talking nonsense here as I haven't downloaded Web Premium 10 so no experience in the programme.
Right now, there shouldn't be a mobile variant as I have uploaded all of the backup files before it was messed up. Xara will have to do a better job at explaining how all of these new features should be implemented before we allow the program to mess up hour and even weeks of work.
Utilities>>Website variants>>Stop sharing with variants - if it is sharing then it will stop and you can organise the text ... if it is a text area you've used, not just a line.
Sorry, just noticed Merlin's post! :o
Maybe if you get rid of the ticker script it will work as it should
Responsiveness is based on css and javascript
If using deprecated javascript it will break the javascript all together.
Hans
I did remove the ticker from the variant mobile version and it made no difference. I'm going back to the drawing board on this.
Nope... it's garbage! I followed along with what the video has said to do (Stop Sharing, reposition and resize, etc.) I guess if you were starting a website from one of the provided templates for a responsive site, things may work the way that they should, but trying to convert an existing site ends up as just a waste of valuable time and a loss of revenue. My client paid for the upgrade in hopes of having a mobile version of the website, but it looks like it isn't going to happen with this software.
If one of you succeeds in accomplishing this task, perhaps you could share the secret because I have not found it. My thought was that it would be more intuitive than what it has been since Xara software has always worked as stated for me in the past.
I'm giving up and waiting for CoffeeCup to get their responsive designer completed (not the markup version, I already have that one and I'll tell you to save your money and wait for the other also.)
Sorry Xara, but this was a waste of my money to upgrade!
Sorry to read about your problems, but with all due respect, surely you did a "save as" before trying out the RWD? New feature, common sense IMHO.
I've just started converting an existing site of mine - done in WP9P and so far, things are working just fine.
Before you resize any text or graphics, just make sure you select "stop sharing with variants".
Aside from always testing a site regardless of what is being used to build a site before it goes live...
The CoffeeCup Responsive Layout Maker Pro is a silly product. One can download dozens and dozens of responsive frameworks to use in DW or EW (which is free now). I cannot imagine using the product just to build the framework or work within its weird limitations.
Oh yeah, I ALWAYS have a backup. I learned that basic knowledge years ago! And I did test before uploading and like you said, everything "looked" fine... UNTIL it went live.
While I do not use Xara products for web sites (nor other WYSIWYG builders), I have helped many people with using them (Xara products included). The only times I have experienced a disconnect from what is exported locally and reviewed carefully in a variety of browsers to what the site looks like on the web, is when there is an incomplete upload to the host.
If the local export is fine, I would suggest wiping out the host's copy of the site and do a complete upload of the exported local site.
I always view the site in all of the major browsers to see how things are translating. Also, I have deleted all of the files from the server manually to make sure of a clean upload... that didn't change anything for me either. I typically never have a problem with the Xara software... Version 10 is a major exception. Nothing But problems.
Did you upload the contents of the folder that was exported or use the FTP inside the Xara product?
I have done it both ways.
Hi,
If your file looks fine but is not appearing correct when you publish, can you send it to me here: http://support.xara.com and I will try publishing and seeing what is possibly wrong.
Thanks
Rob
Me too. You have to Right-click on the text block, select Website variants, and tell it to Stop Updating. Otherwise, any changes you make on one variant will also be changed on all other variants. You can also Select All of the elements on one page, then right-click and Stop Updating the other variants... for that one page.
I have been begging Xara to include a way to Stop Updating completely, so that we can change things around without worrying about affecting other variants. Maybe you can also put in a request for that.
They can leave it as-is for the default - people who have simple sites with frequent changes can then leave it alone so any changes will update all variants. Then those of us who seldom want changes to affect all variants could turn off the updating site-wide, and then right-click and select Start Updating for items we want to update.
Sometimes headlines, captions for photos, even body text will fit fine on one page, but on a smaller page with different width text block, it is 1 or 2 characters too long, so you have to change it. No need to change it on the larger page. Or vice-versa, you might add something on the full size page that completely messes up our layout on the smaller variant page.
We each have our own way of working and our own preferences, I know that. If they just give us an option to turn off the updating, then those who like it the way it is can continue as they are now - it won't affect them.
Xara's reply to me was that most of their customers like the automatic updates on all variants. If so, I guess I'll keep on stopping the updates 1 page at a time.
Yes, I too found out the hard way about the "Stop Sharing." Could be more intuitive for sure. I'm still playing around with it and will see where it leads. Personally, I think the mobile variant should not share by default.
OK... I think I may be making headway with this. Check it out now and see what you think... http://ntunemusic.com
I have checked it out all the way down to my iPod Touch and it seems to be working and looking OK. I would still rather have some sort of option to have the navigation work better. I have a vertical navbar on the side that I wish would work the way I'm expecting in a responsive design. Hopefully you know what I mean by that. In a true responsive design, the navigation takes on a completely different form than what I'm seeing on this site.
Please, share your thoughts and ideas. I am open to suggestions. Of course, the client has to like it first and foremost and may not be as open to changes.
Thanks
Yep, could definitely make it look much better if I could figure a navbar solution that was more responsive. Otherwise, it IS working for now. I will continue to tweak and play but it's getting there.
I am noticing that some of the text is off in places. None of the text is being shared and it looks fine in the program, but upon publish, it's messed up in several areas. I'll have to figure out what is causing the problem... Can't seem to find it since all is well inside of WD10.
Sharing content and text is the whole idea / point of variants, otherwise you may as well simply have two websites for your RWD solution. The size and position of that content is local to each variant and this can be changed freely without effecting the other variants. If you do not want an item on the page to be shared across all variants just go to "Utilities" > "Website variants" > "Stop Sharing with variants" option.
It doesn't matter if the site is simple or complex, if you have multiple variants that you want to change the photo or description, its pointless having to go through each one and making changes, especially if you have a few and many changes. If the content is too big for your smaller size variants, just resize it or reduce the column / text area size so it falls on two or more lines.
If you click on an object, and look in the top right corner of it, it will have two backslashes "\\" to signify that it is being shared. Just look for this before making any changes to the content (again, moving it or resizing it is fine).
We will look into clarifying this better however.

“Xara Web Premium 10 RUINED My Clients Website!!!!”
Thank you for the special and very interesting wording of this headline.
With this post, it will be 26 smiles on my face.
“Please, share your thoughts and ideas.”
OK, please stop crying like some baby in grade school.
And in the end? "Can't seem to find it since all is well inside of WD10."
Come on, this is the first release of a program that has had many changes.
Xara has done a super job. Give them some time to fix the bugs. It may take two or three patches.
Xara had the foresight and committed resources to make RWD a reality and be one of the first to deliver.
It was not we are working on it, or we will release it sometime in the future or later this year. But now!
They deserve a lot of credit.
Hey, I was in the supermarket over the weekend and the National Enquirer had a headline about the real reason OJ killed Nicole Brown. She was carrying a fully-grown six year old alien child. The truth, stranger than fiction. Fits quite well in this thread.
Cheers, Donald
As Rob says, sharing text between variants is very powerful and saves you from typing things over and over again to keep your variants in sync manually.
To ensure that the /content/ of text is shared between variants but not the /style/ of the text, you should use "Update style in this variant" to protect the style in one variant from changing when the style is changed in another.
To create a single button navbar that automatically links to all the pages in your site, delete all the buttons in a navbar except one and then turn on "site navigation bar". You'll see that menu items are then added to that button for all the pages in your site.
Have a look at the templates labelled "(R)" in the Designs gallery to see all of this in action.

Hi Phil.
I understand.
When I added a variant for mobile on a site I created in version 9, the text boxes themselves needed to be moved on the mobile variant.
That moved them as well on the main site, which is a problem.
That's why I also stopped all my text boxes from being shared.
I got tired of having to go back and forth moving things constantly.
It's not an issue for me since the text itself hardly changes once it's set up, but I can see the frustration.
Hi Merlin,
Moving things in one variant should not move them in another, so something's wrong there. Can you post a file that does that here for us to look at?
Phil
On my desktop I'm having problems on your site with the scroll bars. They won't scroll" Mouse wheel will however.
Hello Egg... yeah I'm not sure why the scrollbar isn't working. I have noticed the same thing. I'm still tweaking with this site off and on, but at least now I believe I have the mobile variant working and the client is happy.
