FTP Error while publishing
Hello,
I get the following error while trying to publish my site to the server:
Unknown Error
Also on other attempts it states:
General FTP error
No 5xx error code found in server response
226-File successfully transferred
226 0.166 seconds (measured here), 12.01 Kbytes per second
200 TYPE is now 8-bit binary
Does anybody know how to fix this?
Thanks for your assistance.

Re: FTP Error while publishing
Are you publishing via the xara software or through a third party ftp such as filezilla?
-
Re: FTP Error while publishing
Hi and Thanks for responding.
I was uploading via the Xara software.
I did a Xara software repair procedure which didn't work then I reinstalled the Xara software entirely, still no change.
I contacted Bluehost.com and they said their servers were operating as normal and without any problems reported.

Re: FTP Error while publishing
There is a Microsoft related problem which has been effecting FTP publishing. I am not sure if this is what is causing your problem.
Xara has been working on a patch which should be available in a day or two.
-
Re: FTP Error while publishing
IF you ever have problems with the xara ftp then use filezilla to make sure that it is not your server which is causing the problems. As Gary has suggested there is currently a problem but that is with ie11 and that particular problem would not through up this error. 5xx errors are usually server related ( http://wasd.vsm.com.au/httpd/-/status5xx.html ), don't just take bluehosts word for it, that is why you need to check using an alternative method to upload (filezilla)

Re: FTP Error while publishing
Following your advice, I used Filezilla to upload and the pages were uploaded perfectly.
Note:
I have just realised that there are both .htm and .html files (exact copies) shown when I am exporting the files just before publishing them to the server.
Via filezilla, I can see that I have never uploaded the .html versions of these files. Only .htm files are shown on the server.
-
Re: FTP Error while publishing
.html will always load before .htm. So if you have two versions of your site the .html version will load even if it is older.
When you publish to the web or to a folder, change the file name to index.html. This forces all files to export as .html
-
Re: FTP Error while publishing
Stupid question: but where did the .html files come from?
I have never changed the file extensions. Also, originally the software always only exported/uploaded .htm files.
I've deleted all the copies of the .html files and will attempt to publish via Xara again.

Re: FTP Error while publishing
Well, I tried to upload via Xara and the following message was shown:
General FTP error
No 5xx error code found in server response
226-File successfully transferred
226 0.297 seconds (measured here), 6.69 Kbytes per second
200 TYPE is now 8-bit binary
The upload stops at 58%, so no change.
I will check with bluehost again now.

Re: FTP Error while publishing
Bluehost checked again and said the problem is not from their end.

Re: FTP Error while publishing
As I think I mentioned, this may be a Microsoft problem and Xara is releasing an fix in the next couple of days. In the mean time it is a major aggravation.
-
Re: FTP Error while publishing
I get the same error. I used my old Dreamweaver FTP program to up load the Xara website files to my server and it worked, so problem is with the Xara publisher.
-
Re: FTP Error while publishing
I had the same exact problem soon after I updated Internet Explorer to version 11. All attempts at uploading my site through Xara ended with an incomplete upload. After contacting my hosting company ( Purehost ), who could not help, I tried FileZilla on their recommendation and was able to upload my site perfectly.
This is just a note to let you guys know that I appreciate all the information and knowledge. And when I have a problem it is great to hear that we are not alone!
Thanks to all.

Well, not exactly, other companies' programs are having problems too and IE11 itself is misbehaving apparently. MS has changed some things with IE and that has caused compatibility problems. It doesn't matter if you actually use IE or not, it's on your computer and Xara uses one of the protocols to upload. But as Gary says, Xara are working on it :)

Re: FTP Error while publishing
Thanks to everybody for the assistance.
I will use Filezilla for now until Xara comes to the rescue.

Re: FTP Error while publishing
The patch is now available. Help > Check for Updates.

Re: FTP Error while publishing
UPDATE!!
I was told by Xara suport that I'll need to upgrade to the latest version to get the patch, otherwise I'll have to use a third party FTP software to upload.
-
Re: FTP Error while publishing
Well then, Filezilla is the cheapest alternative. :)

Hi Gary - Clarification please regarding the update/patch. Does this mean XDP7 will no longer upload properly without a 3rd party ftp thereby "suggesting" one upgrade to 9 in order to receive patch/update?
Thank you -
UPDATE: Well my ticket got a quick response so I will paste it below for clarification fro XARA.
Unfortunately yes, the latest update is for version 9 and you need to have a unlocked version to receive updates. You will have to either upgrade to the latest version of Web Designer/Designer Pro or continue using the method you have mentioned, export locally and publish using a third party FTP software.
Kind Regards

Re: FTP Error while publishing
If you roll back IE11 to 10, then the problem is fixed.

Re: FTP Error while publishing
Just to confirm that I have encountered this problem and doing a System Restore to uninstall IE11 and reinstall IE10 solves the problem. The "evil" Windows update was on 1st December 2013. After reinstalling IE10 make sure you unclick the "Install new versions automatically" box in the "About Internet Explorer" dialogue box.
-
Re: FTP Error while publishing
You don't need to do a system restore to do a roll back. To uninstall IE11:
Click the Start button, type Programs and Features in the search box, and then select View installed updates.
Under Uninstall an update, scroll down to the Microsoft Windows section.
Right-click [Windows] Internet Explorer 11, click Uninstall, and then, when prompted, click Yes.
Click one of the following:
Restart now (to finish the process of uninstalling Internet Explorer 11 and restore the previous version of Internet Explorer) or Restart later.

Re: FTP Error while publishing
Yes Miko. Many thanks for that. Probably best to keep the other bits of the windows update. I do think it is scandalous that Xara are not providing a patch to fix WD7 and older versions of WD. If you want IE11 it seems we will have to upgrade to WD9?

It would be good if they did, but from the other perspective, Xara built their software for use with the systems that were around when they made it, not for software that didn't exist. Should they be providing patches for every bit of software they've ever produced? No software developer would do that.

No. Just use Filezilla.

Even Adobe patched CS6 products for Mavericks and Windows 8.1 ;)
One version back doesn't sound unreasonable to me. The code change(s) should be pretty much identical in the previous Xara products as the current versions. A bit of goodwill goes a long ways.
-
Re: FTP Error while publishing
CS6 is the last 'physical' software release, I'm not surprised that they patched it.
Xara may well produce another patch, but there's a perfectly usable workaround and WD7 may be a bit too far back . It's not just a matter of changing a bit of code, you have to do some proper testing and the last thing you want to do is introduce unexpected bugs on a code-line that hasn't been touched for quite a while.
As you say, goodwill is good, but an upgrade is probably even better!

Re: FTP Error while publishing
Having worked for software development companies I agree that there is a lot of testing involved in any release so it involves time and money. However, I am using version 8/MX Premium of the product which I purchased THREE MONTHS AGO and to be told that part of it is already unusable is unacceptable. Even a cheap toaster has a warranty for a year. Hope Xara will reconsider this as it has seriously changed my view of the company.
-
Re: FTP Error while publishing
Hopefully Xara will do a patch for that version, but I don't feel they have an obligation to do so. If you return your system to the state it was in when you bought it (ie rollback to IE10), it will be entirely usable.
