Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 2013 to .PDF
I've just converted an A3 double sided file containing 100% text in 22 varying languages. The Xara a/w looks perfect but when I view the .PDF convertion it has added squares with a cross inside to several of the foriegn languages where there should be spaces.
I've tried varying the .pdf convertor set-ups but to no avail. Any ideas guys?
Re: Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 2013 to .PDF
How are you converting it? What PDF converter are you using?
Re: Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 2013 to .PDF
I think that some fonts that do not contain certain characters, display a box as you are describing.
Re: Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 2013 to .PDF
'Xara Xtreme PDF Preset', it's the panel that opens after I've named the file in the Export panel and hit 'Export'.

The copy is as received from the translators and I've checked their copy with my pasted one and it's fine.

Attachment 99380 This is the box that's being added to copy.
Attachment 99381This is how it appears and how it should look. (It's Latvian BTW)

If it wouldn't be too much work you could try changing the font of the affected spaces to one that does work.

Brilliant Christine, there's always a simple solution isn't there? That language now looks fine, there were obviously characters missing, I changed the font to Arial from Frutiger and it takes on a whole new look. If all the rest do the same and this problem's rectified, I owe you big time Christine, thank you! X
Re: Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 2013 to .PDF
Your welcome - Frutiger - is that a commercial font? not one I have come across before.

Re: Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 2013 to .PDF
Yes, Frutiger is a commercial font. Likely it is an older copy on the OP's system that simply doesn't support the required characters. A new version would if the correct one was purchased.
Re: Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 2013 to .PDF
seems hard to imagine any font not having a space character.

Frutiger is one of the classic fonts. http://www.linotype.com/469/frutiger-family.html
Looking at geez's screen shot it is clear that what is happening is the X boxes are appearing where accented characters are. These are non-standard characters that Frutiger does not recognize. A more recent font will have the extended language support and as discovered, the accented characters will now appear correctly.
Re: Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 2013 to .PDF
As far as I know it's not a commercial font but it is readily available to download. It's our company's corporate image font and it's widely used in all our publications and website now. I actual prefer it to Arial, but for this exercise they are going to have to put up with it. The final font size is 4pt so I don't suppose anyone will notice.
You're a life saver Christine, thanks again.
Re: Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 2013 to .PDF
At 4 pt I don't think anyone could tell the difference.
Frutiger is a commercial font:
Quote:
Frutiger is a sans-serif typeface by the Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger. It was commissioned in 1968 by the newly built Charles de Gaulle International Airport at Roissy, France, which needed a new directional sign system. Instead of using one of his previously designed typefaces like Univers, Frutiger chose to design a new one. The new typeface, originally called Roissy, was completed in 1975 and installed at the airport the same year.
If you purchase an updated OpenType version your foreign characters should be supported.

Another alternative, if you haven't already thought of it, is to get the PDF export to convert all text to shapes. Then, in theory, you can use any font you like that's on your PC and the PDF should look the same whether viewing it on an iphone, an Ubuntu laptop or a Windows 2000 PC.
