Where to get free pictures for websites
Hey Guys, not exactly a Xara related question, I apologies in advanced if this is in the wrong section. I've been building websites for a while now, and where I struggle the most is when clients don't have good pictures. Stock pictures can be quite expensive to a client, I was wondering if there are any good places where there are royalty free pictures to use.
Thank you for your help.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
There are quite a few stock photo resources that are not expensive. I used Big Stock Photo http://www.bigstockphoto.com/ for a stereogram book project and found their images high quality and affordable.
If your clients are too cheap for even these images, then use their own images and let them be embarrassed.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
I have no idea what you are looking for but a while ago I bookmarked a listing of websites that offer free images:

Perhaps you find something useful.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
pixabay.com is a good source of Free images.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
thanks guys, these are great, I will add them to my list. As always your help is always greatly appreciated.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
Don't forget the free images and clip art in the Designs Gallery. There is some good stuff in there too. Especially in the later versions. See the bottom of this page for some examples http://xaraxone.magix.net/XWD9/index_4.htm

Another free resource is Morguefile: http://www.morguefile.com/

wow...did this thread miss google search? Select images and you can search for anything including pics with transparency and animated gifs. Some you can't use but I usually always find something to use very quickly.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
Google image search is not a list of stock images. Very rarely can you find one that you are licensed to use for free from it.

Are you familiar with copyrights ©?
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
I get a lot of clients saying just use google images, gwpriester is right on the money with his last post. You have to be careful on what pictures you use.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
gwpriester frequently does a Google search for 3D stereograms and finds many of his image being used without permission--one person even had a Kindle book, of my images. And then gwpriester has to spend time to have those images removed. :) The Kindle book came down in under 12 hours and the so-called author I am sure got an ear full.
richinri - Go to Amazon.com and buy a copy of Electronic Highway Robbery - An artists guide to copyrights in the digital era by Mary E. Carter. A very bright person who is near and dear to my heart.

Well, maybe Getty is getting warm to the subject. From another forum.

The digital images -- of paintings by Van Gogh, drawings by Rembrandt, and watercolors by Dürer -- had already fallen into the public domain, but the Getty's program makes their digital reproductions much easier to use on the web.
Hmm... perhaps not the frostbitten Getty we're used to, but still very, very cold and nowhere near close to thawing out just yet.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
I would say they are no longer a frozen block of ice. True, what they are releasing are in the public domain, but their digital images are nicer than I have seen around the web. There is some value in that.
It will be interesting to see the next several thousand come online. Takes money to serve what is going to be a large bandwidth hit.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
as I stated in my post on google search......some you can't use. But it is a rare event that I can't find one I can use.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
When we do not have an image a client needs we ask them to supply it, when they sign the order they know that any images they supply must be their own copyright our they must have the correct permissions etc. But some of the ones they supply are clearly from google, one idiot supplied a photo with a watermark on it and it was their competitors image. http://www.sxc.hu/ is one of the best for free images.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
Some moron published (very badly) a Kindle e-book entirely of my images found on the web. About 90% of these had my copyright clearly visible on the image.
I contacted Amazon. The book disappeared very quickly, and the guy will never have another book in the Kindle store.
Re: Where to get free pictures for websites
Thanks will check out.

And how do you distinguish those pictures which you can or can not use? Do you evaluate the copyright status all of them or how?
