png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
Hi,
first, excuse my english please.
My problem is, i do not achieve good results exporting to png. I tried to export the word "design" but the edges of some letters are
very fuzzy - of course mainly letters with round shapes like "e, o". I converted the text to curves and i noticed directly
after converting a loss of quality. But even without converting text to curves, the export result is not very impressing.
Are there any recommended settings (size. dpi?), to get better results, than my example ul png?

Welcome to TalkGraphics
How do you want to use the image?
For print, 300dpi is best. For a web page 96dpi. Please tell us how you want to use the image and we will can give you a more specific answer. :)
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
Well it's trciky for any video system to render curves without a little 'fuzz' (anti-aliasing) on curves when working with square pixels. There are no curves on computer displays, so the small/tighter/thinner you get - the more pronounced this fuzziness is bound to show.
Your graphic looks fine to me at 1:1
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
Hi BusterKeaton,
Welcome to Talkgraphics. :) I export .pngs from Designer ProX for printing all the time and I have no problems as long as they are exported at 300dpi.
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
I really don't see what the issue is. The example image seems fine to me at that resolution.
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
Hi Buster, if there is a specific reason for exporting to PNG a 300DPI will give a good enough quality for most print jobs. However if you want a large format print the PDF/X file type will give excellent print quality even at very large output.
Hope this is of help to you..

Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
Hi angelize
I also have had less than great exports in .pngs. I tried again to export but could not see a place where I can select exporting at dpi.
So, how do I export at 300 dpi? Thanks
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
Hi Tabian,
I tried the PDF/x file type as you suggested, but this doesn't give a graphic file that can be imported into a new file. I thought PDF is pretty much a document type file. How can you take a graphic, that has been saved as a PDF/X file and import it into a new file? Thank you,
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
What kind of file are you importing the pdf into? If it's a xar file, you can certainly import pdfs into xar files.
If you need a bitmap for use in the xar file, you can always select the graphic and make a bitmap copy (Arrange | Create bitmap copy...).
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
Thanks for your welcoming and your replies,
i would like to use the word "design" for web/logo with further editing like colorfill etc.
(should have told you)
I exported it with 96dpi. I thought possibly there are one or the other "trick" of getting
smoother results with the curves.
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
Given the size of the image, I don't see how you can have a better result. It's pretty smooth as far as I can see. There are only 77 vertical pixels and I think few people (perhaps just one) would say that those curves are anything but smooth at that size.
What am I missing?

It's under the second tab (Bitmap Size) in the Export dialog box. It defaults to 96DPI (screen res).
Thing is, PNG was designed to be a screen format, so DPI is kind of superfluous. Most applications (as in uses, not programs) of the PNG format (such as displaying in web pages) need exact pixel dimensions.

Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
I was hoping to create photo quality clip art that I can export into Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. So creating the clip art worked great in Xara, but saving as .png was very disappointing. Still do not know how to save .png at a specified resolution, as when I export it only gives me a choice of what file type I want, and not dpi quality. Any suggestions? Thank You

Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
Not sure which program you have & whether the export options are the same in all versions but try Export png, give it a name and click options button, not the export button. In the options window select required dpi etc from the drop-down list. Ensure you have the minimise screen anti-aliasing selected too. Hit Export.
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
I tried again to export in .png, and when I clicked on export it did give me a choice, so I was able to export at 300 dpi. I then imported into PowerPoint and it had excellent resolution. Thank you for your help.
My version of Xara Designer Pro is the latest (bought yesterday). When exporting it does not give the OPTION button.
But, when I clicked on export, the option screen did come up.
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
The issue is really how the image is going to be used. If you are printing a document using a commercial printing company, then 300dpi is the resolution to use. But for a PowerPoint presentation, 96dpi should be adequate. 300dpi if the presentation is web or monitor based is over kill. Windows can only display 96dpi.
When you export, go to File > Export and then select PNG from the Files of Type drop down list. This will give you more options than if you select File > Export PNG.

Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
Interesting!
If I click on the “Export” button, I do not get an options button. However, when I click on export it gives me the options menu.

If I click on the “Export as png” button I do get a settings button.
Attachment 94203
Thought I would include this for anyone else who is wondering where the OPTIONS/SETTINGS button is!
Re: png export quality not really convincing DESIGNER PRO X
When you click on Export, the sequence is a little different, but AFAICT the options are the same.
Click Export, enter filename, click Export button. That's when the Options dialog appears.
As Beanpole says, if you click Export as PNG. the Settings button is shown in the Export file screen. Then the Settings button displays the Options dialog.

You don't seem to miss anything but i am the one...:'( since i have new spectacles, i see the pixels on the monitor more clearly...
i wish monitors with higher resolution for the 21th century ;))
