More Stereogram Experiments

Transitions that cover great depth in a small space can really distort the pattern in a disturbing and noticeable way.

So, I had an idea that if the portion of the pattern that has the most depth were condensed in height that his distortion could be minimized.

Attached are two images and their repeating patterns.

The first example uses a texture panel with no modifications.

The second example contains three sections where the pattern has been vertically condensed. The condensed areas are inside the cyan lines.

Does it work for you?

Once you have previewed both versions, use the Previous and Next arrow buttons to compare the results.

The texture in the second stereogram looks less distorted in the band near the top. Looks good.

The second image is less distorted. Easier to see the text for me.

The texture in the second image is definitely less distorted and as Bill says the text is easier to read. The second image also seemed easier to maintain the focus for me at least.

Agree, and the text is easier to read in the second image, even considered that you than already know what's the word.

Yes, the second one is much clearer and "poppier". I like the colours............Penny

I just had a thought while scrolling back and forth between the images. I noticed that once focused, I could go back and forth without having to refocus.

So, I was kinda wondering if an animation could be created, say having the sphere bouncing up and down and/or in and out. Have the first frame display long enough to focus and then start displaying the animation affect.

Here's how it turned out. Not one of my best but I learned some things which is what's important.

Chris - Considering that this small version is about 300K an animation, while possible, is not all that practical

I have seen some vector Flash stereoscopic animations, for example, and they can be effective but there is no hidden image.

This one is very tricky to pull out the text along with the other objects.

The spheres are easy and the many stars show themselves well, but even knowing what the text is does not help. The text wants to slip out of focus. Usually I can focus on an element of your stereograms and maintain it easily but not the text in this image. Only the spheres and stars can be maintained. The many levels of stars are very well done and I can focus on individual depths.

I think I was trying to be too tricky with the text. Instead of the text being flat on to the viewer, I had it curving back (see text side view), which in and of itself might have worked, but not with everything else going on. Also, even in this example, there is ambiguity between the P and T which makes it difficult.

It helps knowing that the text is at different depths from top to bottom. Something that may help more is how you have the text in Sample2 in your first post in the thread. The top of the text seems to be flowing toward the deepest depth within the image. That helps me to see the text better.
