I've been looking all over for a little help on this. I would like to make a 3D cup. I have my shape, but am having a bit of trouble with the extrusion of the handle. Does anyone know of a good tutorial on how to make a 3D style cup or glass? I really want to learn how to do this on my own, so I'd really like tutorials if possible. Thanks!

While I cannot offer you a tutorial on how, I think you may need to make two seperate shapes. the cup and the handle and fit the two together. I'm fairly certain this can be done in Xara 3D Maker 7 but the shapes will have to be made in some vector program such as XDP7. I cannot tell from your profile what Xara software you have but you could make the entire thing in say XDP7, or an earlier version fairly easily.
Personaly I'd rather simulate the 3-d effect with a drawing, like this one:

Thanks for the responses. Sorry Larry, I guess I need to edit my profile to show what Xara software I'm using. I do plan on upgrading to Xara Design Pro 7, but am currently using Xara P&GD6 right now. I can create the vector in that and use the 3D tool to extrude it. I know the 3D tool is a lot more limited, but the basics are the same -aren't they? I've been watching a bunch of YouTube videos on 3D effects and really want to be able to do this. Guy - I could use a photo and simulate the effect - but honestly it's not the look I'm trying for. I am just learning some of this stuff, and know I have a long way to go, but I really want to learn how to do this. :)

I just couldn't get what I wanted with the Extrusion tool, so I did something I RARELY ever do anymore, I...yes, it's true, I used (another) traditional 3D modeling program(!) I wanted to 'curve' my website name into the cup. Made a cup. Made a handle. Made my name. Curved it. Stuck 'em together, rotated it and played with the lighting. But I can assure you, (just about) everything else on my site is XARA, all the way. and that would be just another old graphics designer's cup if it wasn't for the XWD website behind it jazzing it up.
Coleen, have you thought about trying one of the Free 3D Programs? Autodesk123D or Blender... While not Xara, they are fun to explore as see what can be done. Tom aka Hwy101
Now that is what I'm talking about! I'm not looking to do the same exact effect with the raised text on the cup, but yeah, that is really what I'm looking for! Did you do the cup in Xara? I'm working on one, but it's very amateurish in comparison! Love the look - thanks. Any advice?
Swift 3D. Though the coffee ripples were Live Effects in Xara.

I worked on mine a little bit yesterday (haven't yet today) I'm going to try for a multi-colored mug next, but James, that is really awesome - and you even spelled my name correctly! Wow - Thanks! I fully agree with Coleen, James. That is an awsome image. Looking at the foam in the cups are you sure it's coffee and not cola or root bear? :)

The texture for the coffee was from a photograph. (What's this "root bear" that you speak of?) ;) You reminded me of a very pleasant childhood memory of going to the A & W Drive-in for very delicious burgers.... never really cared much for root beer though.
I did this (in Blender) the same way that I would likely do it in Xara. Take a texture, lay it down in perspective and then use it as a bitmap fill on an ellipse.
If I hadn't been lazy, I would have modified the texture of the coffee so that they didn't look exactly alike. Still, it is obvious that I am just showing examples of the coffee cup, so let it go as is. (I probably should have at least rotated the texture to make it less obvious that they're duplicates...)
May I offer you your own cup? (though I have a feeling you probably like your coffee black)

Very nice James. You keep amazing me with the things you can do with Blender.
I had a brief look at it a while ago but found it too complex to start working with it. Maybe I should give it another try.

I too was very intimidated when I started with Blender. It was version 2.49, which wasn't laid out nearly as logically as 2.5+ versions. My advice is just take it one little piece at a time and to PLAY with it, so it never gets to be an agonizing chore.
On another thread, Larry was trying to animate a kaleidoscope. I can't for the life of me figure out (yet!) how to do it in Xara, so got the idea of doing it in Blender. I really just built the thing in Blender as if I was making it in the real world. Take three mirrors at 120° angles and put the camera at one end, the moving image at the other.
I dearly love it. As I've said too much about I am sure, I just think Xara and Blender work great together. Very often, both are open and I'm going back and forth as I need assets in Blender, I make them or edit them in Xara. [Objects in Blender can have up to 10 textures applied to them, controlling everything from coloring, to specularity, to mirroring, to transparency, etc.]
If you take the plunge, feel free to message me with any questions or problems that you come across. I like to be a resource where possible!
One other thing, if you have interest, I can easily provide the packed blend file and you can just open it up in Blender and see what I did and also edit it to your heart's content while learning.

I have to say one thing about Xara users...I love how helpful everyone is. I've been a part of many boards for programming and often find that either no one has an answer, or no one will answer. The goblet looks just a little bit washed out, but it might be sitting in a bright environment. The part that doesn't seem right is that the goblet has a lid.
A very cool application of Xara 3D, though!!!

The right hand goblet was made with the inclusion of another X3D image to remove the 'lid'.
The left image with added XDP wine.
Love the stem on the goblet. I like the second set, they look great! I think I'd fill mine with a red wine though... ;)
