Hi!
I have a 9-year-old file with an .art extension, that I believe was created in Xara X. We don't run Xara anymore, and I've tried everything to open this file! It would be very onerous to recreate, so I was hoping someone was still running XaraX and could convert it to something more useable.
Any takers? :D

That would actually predate Xara X. How large is the file? You can try attaching it here. But what could be more usable than Xara? I'm insulted you would even say that. :))
What do you consider more usable?

The removal of Xara predates me, too, so don't go shooting the messenger! ;) eps, ai, cdr or even a jpg would be usable.
Try it. If the file type is not recognized, then ZIP the file and upload the ZIP file here as an attachment.
How do you plan to use the content? There is a big difference between AI and JPEG.
We're a sign company and produced these decals for a casino, as chip counters. They need to be exact, but wouldn't change, so a high-res jpg would be ok to print more from. An AI or eps is preferable, though.

Well, I tried with Designer 6 Pro I didn't have any luck. Even with the .xar .art import option. Anybody out there with an older version of Xara?

John is correct. Examining the file with a Hex Editor reveals it is a compressed bitmap which matches the AOL image format description.
If you have a machine with AOL installed you should be able to open the file and save it as a jpeg.

I did consider the ArtCAM angle, because we did have that installed (very briefly) at some point. Due to the timelines, it made more sense that it was a Xara file - we had a designer here in 2002 that was using it (obviously a smart one!). And the internet told me that an .art file COULD be a Xara file, and we all know the internet is never wrong, right? ;)
I will probably have to rebuild the file, but it was worth a try. Thank you again for all your help!

I may be using 'header' loosely me being an artist not a tech - I just dragged it into notepad and there it says: 'ArtCAM 5.501 ArtCAM material parameter file........'
