I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
I've used Xara Web Designer for several sites, first time I have run into this.
No matter how many times I publish to my host, the pages are blank once it's done. All the files upload, everything is there, but the pages are blank:
http://bereanministriescogic.org/
I removed the index page so that you can see all of the files, any html file you click on, they are blank.
What's up?

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
Even the html source is blank, it's uploading the html files, and the support files, but for some reason the html files are blank?
Is this a glitch? Do I need to redo this entire site?

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
I dont think anything Web Designer related would cause something like this. even when i viewed http://bereanministriescogic.org/indextest_html_files/ i could see that your image files werent being served either.
Id contact your server provider and ensure file types are being served correctly.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
This site is on the same server and was created using the same program:

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
Now that site isn't working either, is was earlier, but when I just did a test and updated it it's coming up blank to. So it must be server side like you said, thanks.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
I have 40 sites on this server, doesn't really make sense that the ALL work UNTIL I try to update one with xara web designer, then they stop working.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
I've confirmed that this is an Xara Web Designer issue.
There are no issues with my server.
To test I saved and exported my xara web designer project and then I uploaded it using a third party FTP. It worked fine and the page works.
If I then go back and try to use the ftp service within xara web designer I get blank pages and blank graphics. It uploads the file names but not the content of the files.
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the program.
Help would be appreciate. The FTP within the program is failing me.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
Please see the update to this post, it has to be an issue with the xara web designer ftp client. It's not working, if I upload the files via another ftp program it works. When I use the one inside the xara program I get blank pages and files.

It would have to be an impressive FTP client bug to suck out web page content as you publish the files to the server.
Re-examine your procedures for generating the site files. I suspect there's a mistake somewhere.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
Hi CJ and welcome to Talkgraphics,
I have just tested an upload using the XDP FTP client and it worked perfectly so, I'm afraid, I'm no nearer to I helping you find a solution to your problem, but for what it's worth, I always recommend not using the Xara FTP client. It's the most basic form of uploader and gives you no feedback whatsoever. Just stop using it and use Filezilla or any other fully-featured FTP client and you'll be so much happier. Using the Xara FTP client is like flying in fog.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
A quick question. Are you using Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall? If so, this may well be the cause of the problem. One of my most valuable tools when I go to see clients with PC problems is the Norton Removal Tool. It's amazing the kinds of problems that disappear when you remove that malware from your computer.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
Reexamine my procedure? It's Xara's procedure. I create a file, I save the file. I export it, I set up the FTP and I upload. It worked until a few days ago and now it's not, just uploads blank files and blank pages. It's a pain in the butt and it has to be Xara. I've uploaded the exact same files using another FTP and it works.
Thanks for the advice on using another FTP. I get that, but now I can't resell this program to my clients as a all in one solution for them to update and upload their site. The whole point of the program for me is that it's easy, drag and drop, and that I or they can upload from the same program, if they have to start using two different programs I lose them to hosting sites with online editors.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
No not using norton, you really just linked to an exe file in a forum? Not cool.

There's been quite a few Xara newbies that have started out feeling Xara screwed up only to find thirty or forty posts down the line that there's something simple they've missed (because this stuff is new to them) that throws a spanner in the works. They get red faces and it's very rarely that it turns out to be a problem with Xara. We just gotta keep on looking..

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
An anonymous source from North Queensland suggests the following:
If the transfer methods (ASCII or Binary) are unsupported, the ftp client (Xara's internal) will be able to create files (because thats just issuing a command)
but not able to upload data (open a data socket ) Can also happen if the wrong mode is selected (active vs passive)
He should check with his host as to which is best.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
Id recommend submitting a support ticket and including details for a test account that can be used to access the server you are publishing on.

No, I'm not a complete idiot :-O I linked to the Norton Removal Tool off the Norton/Symantec website.
Code:

Cool

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
If it was a Xara bug, wouldn't it hit us all then?
I've never had any such problems neither with Filezilla nor Xara 'publishing'.
If it used to work before I would check witht he ISP/host if they have changed anything related to their ftp-server.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
So no help at all and I'm an idiot. What a great group of folks.
It may very well be a setting but here's the thing. It was working and then it stopped, with no changes made. I published the sites they did fine. I went back to update them and it wouldn't upload. So it can be about three things, a bug, a setting that I am missing that really shouldn't be there because it should be automatic once I put in the FTP info, or, my server isn't allowing it to write for some reason. That's it.
To get all high and mighty and say that it can't possibly be a software issue is ignorant. I will work with support and won't bother with the forums any more. They seem to be about as useless as Yahoo comments.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
sorry, but I think you are over-reacting slightly ;)
hopefully support will sort it out - be interesting to see what develops for everyone's information, and I am sure bb2 will keep us informed
good luck

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
Idwdcom2,
Your rudeness is ill directed. There are a lot of experts here that give of their time freely to help anyone that asks for it. You've already said that uploading with a third party ftp program solves the problem, so why not use that for now until the problem is figured out? Since you are the only person out of thousands with this problem, don't you think that it just MIGHT be possible the problem lies with your system or server? You refuse to accept the fact that something may have changed. Without help from you your problem will never be solved. I'm sure there are a lot of Xara users (myself included) that would like to get this resolved in case it ever crops up again. If you choose to leave the forum that's fine with us, but it doesn't solve the problem. Have you considered the possibility that a program file may have become corrupt, and reinstalled the program? Do you upload the entire site each time, or re-publish changed files only? There are still options to pursue to solve this, if you choose to. If not, good luck.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
Is the site you are having problems with this one?
http://bereanministriescogic.org/indextest.html
The indextest.html is not a valid filename unless your web host has added that to be a default for your domain.
Most web hosts are configured to recognise default.html, index.html, and index.htm and serve them when a visitor does not specify more than the domain URL.

I think round these parts that's the pot calling the kettle black.
Soquily seems to have identified the problem despite there being very little to go on besides "it doesn't work".
Given the domain name, I assume you aren't one of the congregation, because a bit of understanding for your fellow man and humility always helps.

And a sense of humour wouldn't hurt either.

It's always amazing/depressing how some people find that a rude attitude is the best way to meet a lot of good (and free) advice with :-(

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
Well, I have to say that I follow most things on here for two reasons: first, I never know when someone else is having a problem similar to mine, and there's always that nice feeling you get when in the presence of REAL experts who show us mortals how to do something, and secondly the experts here are the friendliest and most polite bunch I think I've ever come across. When there are insults, they are obviously being humorous, and the rivalry between the experts is fun to watch too.
Like when an expert says 'do x', and then another one says, 'yeah, but you could do it the easy way, like this...' First expert will always come back with a humble apology(while sticking pins in a wax effigy, no doubt).
Long may you all continue!

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
I'm having a sort-of similar problem. My hosting site recently moved my domain to a new server, but didn't move my website <sigh>. So I decided to redo it with Xara. I love the ease of dragging and dropping and the other really kewl things it can do that other editors cannot.
I just started with 3 little pages - Welcome, a small photo gallery and a contact form. I used one of the form widgets for this. Everything publishes fine, but the form doesn't show up on the screen. It seems to be downloading something when the page is accessed, but nothing happens. Any suggestions? My website is http://www.krafters.net
Thanks.

Re: I'm getting blank pages when I publish to site
Nevermind. I opened the site and selected the form. I moved it to the back and then brought it to the front. I re-published and now it's working. Go figure <shrugging>.
This is a very helpful forum and I just LOVE Xara products!!
