Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
This new behaviour of double-clicking an object to edit it is driving me nuts. Whenever I want to rotate an object, I have to select it, count to three then click it again to get the rotation handles up. I've tried to get used to it but I just can't. Can we please get rid of it or change it to ALT+Click or something?

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
It really isn't anywhere near as long as having to count to three. It's a slow double click instead of the fast double click we have in XX5. And the bonus is that the fast double click brings up in most cases a handy context-sensitive option which, I have found, is a useful feature. I quite like the new change. I have gotten used to it and find the advantages outweight the disadvantages.

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
you can rotate it by moving your cursor to just inside the boundary handle, when the cursor will change to rotation/skew mode
you can set the origin point on the info bar without being in rotation mode too
one thing you cannot do this way though is move the origin point manually...

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
Ah who cares? You just have to get used to this. It's ain't bad and I find it useful.

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
May I remind everyone that the Dear Xara forums are not for discussion. If you agree with a request then post that you agree.
If you disagree please refrain from posting. Post count within a thread should indicate the number of people that support a request.
At this point there are 3 unnecessary posts within this one thread.

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
has there been a change of policy then Bill - because this post says we should

[mine is a disagree by the way]

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
No change in policy, that was John's opinion about posting, not the original intent of the Dear Xara forums.

If the moderators can't agree about how the forums are used, then you can hardly be surprised by how plebs like us use the forum.
I think that expressing a negative view for a particular feature is probably as valid as a positive one and may well comply with the original intent - to find features that the user base would like to see incorporated.
Yes, my post may be OT, but also entirely relevant.

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
Paul you and Steve seem to enjoy nit picking every thing any moderator posts.
Have it your way.
So long.

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
Bill, it's an opportunity for the moderators to clarify what is required of people, not some personal insult. Clearly there's an ambiguity. I think that the forum itself doesn't lend itself easily to guaging opinion on a feature (we really need a growing poll of features that collate for and against votes).
I don't go seeking out moderator posts to nitpick and I don't particularly like moderators suggesting I do, either. If I was so disposed, I could have a lot of fun, indeed. Better to read my posts as a constructive dialogue than some kind of moderation annoyance.
You guys do a good job, and in general, I would say that since recent upheavals the moderation note has been even more positive than it has been before.

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
I asked for clarification and I said thanks when I got an answer Bill
I am not nit-picking, and I don't like the suggestion either, I am trying to understand why moderators are not all following the same policy
And I agree with Paul - frankly Dear Xara has mostly been from the outset, in practice, both workarounds and nays as well as ayes; and this has got to be useful I would have thought

Yeah, I agree - it is just as important to know who thinks a feature is a bad idea as it is to know who thinks it's good. That said, all the people who disagree with me on this are just plain wrong. I don't see why it should be necessary for me to adjust my workflow every time some newbie wants something changed. After 10+ years of loyalty to Xara, I would hope I'd get a little more consideration than the average schmuck. Unlike beretgascon, I don't find changing tools a chore and really hate it when tools change themselves. Whilst it may not actually be a 3-count between clicks, the disruption that it causes me when I am working certainly makes it feel like that. Of course, it is almost always accompanied by the need to change back to the arrow tool first, so the actual delay is easily 4 or 5 seconds. It is one of those things that stops you dead in your tracks, like when shortcuts change for no reason [Duplicate - changing the shortcut has effectively stopped me using that feature altogether].
Handdrawn's suggested workaround is another thing that I find really annoying, even after more than a year to get used to it. I find it often gets in the way when I am trying to SHIFT-select adjacent objects and I don't really understand why it was put in, it seems to achieve nothing positive. Actually, that goes for both features.
Looks like I have opened a real can of worms for myself here. I've gone from being slightly miffed at one new change to being thoroughly annoyed at the sum effect of all these little changes over the last few versions. It is exactly why I stopped upgrading Photoshop after v 5.5 and switched to Corel - I figured if I have to keep relearning how to use it, I may as well see what else is out there. It makes me wonder what else I have gotten used to that has actually degraded my workflow over the years.

Valid point - agree 100%

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
I agree with you about the interruption to workflow - if you go back to my posts at the time of versions 3/4 you will see them peppered with comments about this, the detail of which is off topic here
also I agree that the cursor rotate can be annoying, I moaned about it at first but I have got used to it, so I offered it just for the record now that I find it useful, such is life - we are all different and we all evolve
now I just have to get used to cursor page resizing :D
as for what else is out there - they will change things too, you can bet on it....

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
There are at least a handful of things about XDP6 that annoy me immensely, don't worry, I'm far from being a fanboy. However, I am also a professional user and I realise that one man's bread is another man's Illustrator (oops, I mean poison). I therefore accept the little annoyances in favour of using a product that gives me the best personal workflow I know of. I stopped upgrading Photoshop after CS3 but I doubt I will stop upgrading X since, in general, its upgrades continue to expand the product into hitherto unknown areas and the upgrade price always remains well within my budget.

I disagree. The new behavior works well for me. :-)
-
Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
I also disagree, I find it quite intuitive to double click to edit .....

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
I agree. An observation, was it change for changes sake.

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
Can you tell me what advantage it has? I don't see double-clicking as being any less of a chore than pressing F4 or F8 or whatever, especially if you use a tablet, yet it gets in the way of functionality that has been there for more than a decade. It just forces you to make an adjustment to your workflow that slows you down.

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
I think what all you guys are saying is that "I wish Xara would allow more configuration choices in how the UI works, so we can keep old behaviours if we wish".
-
Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
I think your perception of whether double-clicking interferes with slow-clicking in the Selector depends on how slow or fast you have your double-click speed configured in Windows.
So, you may be able to improve things by setting you double-click time faster in Windows. Obviously that won't suit everyone but I just put it forward as a possible solution for some.

Double click to edit in the new version?
Edit: Okay, I downloaded and tried the new version. Tis much ado about nothing, now that I've tested. My apologies for the fist shaking. :)

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
Maybe I've missed something here?
2 clicks for the rotation/skew handles
Double-click to edit shape with orignal tool (eg: rectangle tool)
This is the same as Xtreme 5 / Xtreme Pro 5 / Web Designer 5 / Web Designer 6 / Photo & Graphics Designer.

Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
Not for me. Maybe it's a setting in Options, but it's different for me in XDP6 for the first time.
-
Re: Double-Click Behaviour is Really Annoying
I have to agree with beretgascon here, the behavior I've always seen in XX is that a double-click (when using the Selection tool) is treated as 2 separate clicks, one to select an object, the second to change to the rotation handles, no matter how fast you double-clicked.
That said, I'm liking the double-click to edit, as I have Windows' double-click set really fast, so I'm not likely to get tripped up by it. Also, with the addition (several versions ago) of being able to access the rotation/skew controls from the main handles, the only time I really need to switch to the rotation handles is when I need to manually move the rotation center.
-- Ben
[Edit: I just realized, if the double-click behavior was introduced in XXv5, I wouldn't have noticed it, because I only had version 5 for about a month before I upgraded to 6. I'm used to v3 and 4.]

That's right and it is still annoying as hell after all this time. It tripped me up several times again today and I noticed it causes something else even more annoying - if you have a multiple selection and you unintentionally invoke the editing tool, it deselects all but the object you click on. The faster you work, the more often it trips you up. It is driving me nuts.
I should sit down and make a list of all the "improvements" that make life harder than it used to be, except it would be too depressing.

yes that part is annoying
I still have not got my head completly round that fact that now if I change layer it deselects my objects -very bad news to some workflow when the new gallery was introduced, but no way round it [that I know of], so I have to live with it and adjust
