What happened to the moderator poll - cheeky!
Full size. As it was. I'm sure - know for certain - people are missing some stuff cos of the thumbnails. Been through all this at the time of the change though Gary ;)
Sadler - I removed the post because as I was posting it--first without the poll and then with the poll, I discovered that I had not thought it out very well. I will try to gather my thoughts in my addled brain and repost.
Where? What are you on about? I like thumbnails in my browser but Ilike full size images at a gallery.
@Bones - I'm pretty sure Gary means on the forum
Bones - I am referring to the thumbnail images that are attached in these posts. You have to click the thumbnail image to see the full sized image.Quote:

The question is: Do you like the thumbnail images or would you rather see the full size image when the thread opens?
I voted thumbnails because I have no problem clicking to view an image if it interests me, or clicking a couple of times if it needs to be opened at full size.
However as long as full size images are forced to not be so wide that it screws up reading the text of posts, that's keen too.
I prefer the full size images. I'm sure most of the TG members are going to be reasonable with the sizes, and only post what they need to view the content properly, and not overwhelm the forum. However, having said that if people keep posting images that need horizontal scrolling and long download times, then the thumbnails need to replace them. The other option is for thumbnails for everything over a certain size (as it is now), but make that size much bigger than it is now. Follow Xara's lead and go with 500 pix or so.
I think I'm remembering rightly: images used to be restricted in width and virtual size. Same restrictions as now, perhaps, only we get to see the full image straight away.
Just to clarify my position, I didn't intend that to mean that I think anyone on this forum used to or would post like that. Going back and reading it I may have chosen a poor wording. :o
In any case I've frequented some forums where it's almost impossible to read a lot of threads because of ridiculously huge attachments.
On the other hand, at least here we get thumbnails. The guitar forum I frequent doesn't even do that, and that's a real drag.
P.S. Xara should use their coding prowess to make a command line version of Xara that can render thumbnails, so that when people attach .xar files they'd be visible. :D
I voted thumbnail. Full size is just fine in a thread where there aren't many pictures, but on a busy thread where people are posting a lot of images, I prefer to click on the images to view it and when I revisit the thread, click on the new images. Threads load a lot faster that way.
I admit I prefer the full size images over the thumbnail versions. I don't know how many of these silly thumbnail images I've passed up clicking on the first several times through a thread only to end up clicking on one to see what all the fuss is about and finding that what looked like a ho-hum drawing in miniature is something quite different when viewed full size. Or, much to my surprise since there's no indication, the crummy thumbnail preview actually turns out to be an animated GIF.
I remember voicing my discontent over the thumbnail views when they were introduced a while back. I'm glad to see we're revisiting the issue and that we may have a chance of switching back to the full view as standard. Actually, back then, I thought it would be cool if the viewing preference could be a user selection available from everyone's control panel so an individual user could select their preference, full view or thumbnails. I believe Sledger was going to look into the possibility of making the view user selectable but, at that time, it was only available as a 'global' vBulletin setting.
That's my take,
Harry
Remember that some of us don't have a full fledged broadband internet connection. And as a general rule; I hate to use all resources we have. Servers are using energy, all that we can spare is profitable. Don't hog the lines when there's no real need, I'd say.
When the thumbnails first came about I didn't like them either but they have grown on me. I can prepare a page long tutorial and when the thumbnail is clicked and the larger image opens up one more click will open it up in a new window now the reader can use Ctrl+ to increase the size or even Ctrl+P to print it out.
I voted thumbnail, I only have 2GB fast speed, after that I go deadslow again, and I don`t want to waste that on big pictures I might not even want to see.
They are also handy on my handy (cellphone ;o) )
Please lets go back to full images.
Having to click and wait for a load is really annoying.
Most of the time I just squint at the thumb.
Well DD that is why I want thumbnails, if I use up up my 2Gb a month I have
to wait forever for a thread to load if it is all big pictures. ;)
Is there forum software that would allow the individual to change mode between thumbs and no thumbs ?
I’m sure I must be missing something with all this. As I see it you get a thumbnail, click on it and get a bigger image, click again and get a bigger version if it’s available?
How is having to do a whole extra click in anyway a great task or inconvenience, and if you’ve bothered to look at the thread in the first place, no doubt intrigued by the title, you’re surly going to notice that there’s a thumbnail to look at and that it might require a bit of a click if you want to look at it in greater detail. In fact you are probably more likely to look at it, as you haven’t 'clicked' off to another thread because some massive image is taking so long to load you’ve given up waiting.
Elsewhere there is a current thread that seems to be lamenting the fact that if images are posted on TG someone could pinch them; well print your name across it then. This thread on the other hand seems to be saying that it requires an extra click or two to get an image that is big enough to be worth downloading for whatever reason.
Every time I’ve come to this forum over the past couple of weeks all the posts seem to be about the forum itself rather than about; well anything else really.
It must be heat?
Derek
I agree Derek. We do seem to be getting away from the purpose of the forums, to ask questions and provide answers and show examples of images we have created.
But as you can see by the vote numbers, there is a good number of people on both sides of the issue. And it is interesting to hear people's reasons pro and con.
But yes, maybe some day we can get back to talking about graphics.
RE: Sizes.
When you post an image there is a chart (attached) that is below the Browse windows that indicates maximum file size and in many cases, maximum width for an image. The limitations are there for the very reasons stated by some members who do not want to open an thread with a 6MB image that someone has posted.
I believe that if an image larger than the specified size is attached it will appear in text as an attachment but will not be displayed until the visitor clicks on the link.
I agree, let's get back to talking about graphics and the Xara software.....it's not very educating to hear this much grumbling (from one who has grumbled a bit too much too).....good call, as usual Gary.
