This challenge is simple, using the text shapes I've provided create a text effect and in clear easy to follow steps tell us how you did it. with all the talent and creativity on Talkgraphics this thread could be come a great resource! To start things off I've come up with an extruded lava effect. I've also included the .xar file of my effect which may be easier to read and handy to pull apart for closer inspection

Re: Text effect challenge
Filled text with an earthy fill and 3d-ised it. Cloned it and dragged down to make reflection and added watery bitmap for it to be reflected in with some more surf/mist behind and a few drops of water on text.
Can't think of a situation where I would inflict this on a letter head or similar but thats my attempt.

Re: Text effect challenge
Snow text:
Create grey 3D extrusion.
Duplicate this extrusion and [convert to editable shapes]
Replace it's bitmap with a wood fill.
Make this wood fill bitmap shape into a [stained transparency].
Select original 'text' shape.
Give it a plasma fill (black and white).
Use [mould tool] to shape it's perspective onto the 3D text.
Create a transparent bitmap copy from this and remove original shape.
Duplicate this copy and give it a grey fill and use it as a [contrast transparency]
Group these 2 bitmaps and create a bitmap copy from it and remove original.
Use [Mehdi eraser classic] to remove most of black (not all).
Make a duplicate bitmap copy of this and remove original.
Alter [contone] colours of bitmap to white and greyish brown etc.
Do similar procedure which manual shapes to place snow on top.

Great effects guys! Remember you aren't limited to 3d effects. I hope to see lots more!

Re: Text effect challenge
I did this ages ago in AI and I thought I could compare the two in this challenge. Transforming the lettering was much easier in AI but when it came to using the Contour Tool in Xara as fast as anything. Swings and roundabouts come to mind.

Here's my text effect. Still, after all these years, playing around with creating that realistic chrome effect and still not being 100% happy with it. Not going to carry on with this one unless I get some inspiration (which is currently sorely lacking)

Re: Text effect challenge
That chrome looks good Frank. I see you managed to find a suitable bitmap for the job.

Re: Text effect challenge
Yeah, the presentation of chrome is absolutely dependent on the environment you place it in. Move the car and you have to redo the chrome. Maybe that's what's annoying me. I have a bee in my bonnet about chrome, maybe needs a few highlights? Dunno, aaaaargh...:banghead:
Still, thanks for the comments :)

Re: Text effect challenge
Here's my attempt at this challenge.
1. Filled the text with a seamless tile.
2.The Text and Flat Fill with 20% Black.
3. Bevel flat fill with chisel and convert to edible shape.
4. Ungroup beveled shape and fill center with 100% black.
5. Blue-black center to back and stretch to the right and down to create shadow.
6. Create three rectangles are layered in the back at 20% gray.
7. Fill center rectangle with seamless tile and create 20% gray circles to cover half circles on edge.
8. Bevel outer rectangle and create additional 100% black rectangle on top with linear transparency for highlighted colors.
I attached the seamless tile that I created for others to use in some other projects.
Enjoy, :-bd

Great job RUSS-USSR. I love the effect but I don't understand how you did it based on your outline. I really like the smoky trail effect. Thanks for sharing.

Each letter is an individual object with the same 3D effect. Various backgrounds, drop shadow, letters twisted around at random:

Hi Bill nice to hear from you!
I had a look at your entry which is great by the way! I had fun creating mine from scratch. Isn't it strange how one can come up with similar or same ideas as the next! I guess we are all influenced by what we see, feel and experience at the time. I guess we aren't so different after all!
Keep up your good work Bill, you are a diamond.

Wow cool stuff.
My contribution is pretty basic. Just a round beveled frame and some drop shadows. It's several yeas old...i will remake it with some of the cooler
techniques I am learning from you all.

Re: Text effect challenge
Because of the extrusion, I had a problem getting the shadow to align properly. I had to create a new copy of the text, convert it to editable shapes,
ungroup (twice) and after flipping, place each shape individually. There was still some work to do with stretching and skewing, too. Improvements to Xara's floor shadow feature wouldn't come amiss.
I was rather pleased with the candy striped fill (repeating linear fill) which seems to complement the font I used (LHF Letterhead Tuscan - $30 from here - a very nice site).
Saludos,
Bob.
