Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hi All,
I just ran into a new problem with XXP5. Every now and then the application is spiking the CPU usage and then ultimately bombs forcing me to Ctrl Alt Del and stop the application. I have 512 megs on the grfx card and 4 gigs of memory.
Does anybody have any idea why XXP5 would be spiking the CPU?
Thanks

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Could you tell us a little more about your system?
Are you using a quad-core or dual-core system?
Which operations in Xtreme are you using when the spiking occurrs? Is it flash animation previews (for example)?
Which security suite is running on your PC?

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Try running the machine on safe/diagnostics mode. Make sure first that no other software is interfering with Xara.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hi All,
Sorry for the delay in response. Most of the spikes / crashing happens when I'm dealing with a multi-page layout.
I'll create a new page or copy an existing one and then I the CPU spikes, I get a runtime error and everything stops.
I hope this helps.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
I have experienced the same problem when I have a multipage design and click in utilities.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
I just opened a file that had 3 pages. I went to scroll thru the pages and XARA completely bombed out all the way to the desktop. We tried looking at the "event logs" to find out why XARA crashed and there was no record at all. Nothing to indicate XARA was even open.
I have worked with XARA for a LONG time and it has always been solid as a rock. But I am getting really frustrated with this issue.
Can anybody help at all? Is it a application or hardware error?
EDIT - the other issue is that "sometimes" if XARA bombs out when a file is active, I cannot reopen the file rendering it useless. What is going on?

Hi P,
Can you recreate the error or is it intermittent?
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hi,
can you post a XAR drawing with exact instructions on HOW TO CRASH IT ?
If other users would either be able to crash XARA, it would probably be a software error, otherwise it could be a windows or Hardware driver problem of your PC.
It could help.
Cheers

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
If you want to bring Xara to its knees, use the panorama feature.
I have use a program like this for several years in my real estate work and never had a problem - I do assume, however, that the program was on their server and not on my computer.
I used the panorama in Xara for several days last month and if I did so about 5 times, Xara came to a complete stop and the error message was something about lack of memory - don't remember exactly. The only way was to close Xara from the task menu and start again.
Found that I could do maybe 4 panoramas at a time and them shut Xara down and start on the next group. Just closing each page as I finished did not solve the problem - guessing that Xara is not dumping the buffer when a page is closed or something along those lines.
I am on a Acer 2.2 machine with 4mb of memory. - jb

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
4mb of memory would certainly be a big problem for you Jeb.
Likely you mean 4GB ;)
Of course, a 32bit system cannot address that much memory - being around the 3.5GB give or take.
If you are importing large images from a digital camera to create panorama - these jpegs are decompressed and held in memory during the time you are editing and creating the panorama. The result is re-compressed when you save it out as a final jpg.
But remember that Xtreme saves bitmaps in the bitmap gallery, so if you finish with one panorama, delete everything off the page then import the next set of files, you are *adding* to the bitmap gallery more uncompressed data.
Empty the bitmap gallery or start a new document to give some memory back to the system.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hi A,
in typical "life" fashion, the file I referred to no longer demonstrates the crashing I experienced a few days ago - argh. I can scroll through the pages without any issue at all.
This leads me to believe it is a hardware or OS issue. I'm looking through other multipage files for any sign issues.
Thanks

Just bumping for some help

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
I was working XXP5 and I moved a text block off the side of the page. The entire app just crashed without warning.
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hi Sofa King. Try contacting Xara support as this appears to be isolated to your system.
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
XARA Support, for the first time, has been no help at all. I just don't know what to do at this point.
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
I have the same problem. It doesn't happen all the time but if I move the pages around a lot scrolling up and down with my mouse I will get an error message and Xara will close. Sometimes it will just crash. I keep saving all the time but still a nuisance when it crashes...tao

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
UGH!!! I was applying a circular fill to a simple circle when I received:
Internal Program Error 4198.k.no.de
I was able to save but now the app is closed.
This is ridiculous.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Have you checked your system for malware infections?
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Yes we do. Can you think of anything else?
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Not without having access to the machine itself I'm afraid.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hi All,
I was working a file and I was adjusting the light souce on a 3D object when I received the first of 4 errors:
Access Violation Exception at 0x004F3682
I tried pressing "Continue" with the hope to save the file when I received this error:
There is insufficient memory to perform this operation. Do want to try to make room by deleting UNDO records?
I pressed ok. Then I received this error when I tried to save:
Internal program error 1083.k.st.es
I pressed ok when I then received this final error before Xara crashed:
Access violation exception at 0x007F30C4
4 errors in one shot. Does this info help give anybody any idea what might be going on?
EDIT: Also, our IT guy is convinced this is a problem exclusive only to Xara - an internal application error. But I have Xara installed on my PC at home and I push the application 10 times harder on my personal PC than I do here at work - but I don't get errors at home. I think it's a hardware issue.
EDIT 2: I shut the PC down and rebooted. I went to open the file I was working when Xara crashed when I received this error:
A read error occurred (file does not exist) with the file:
(the file location, blah blah blah)
I can see the file and its contents in the preview mode but it will not open. Any ideas?

I agree. Hardware issue, probably your hard disk drive.
Backup now.
And you have answered your own question, the IT guy is mistaken.

Preview mode only shows the embedded gif image thumbnail, not the file contents. The thumbnail image is in the file header, this does not indicate the file itself is intact.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hi S,
I had a feeling it was hardware. But this is a slippery slope. Right now I'm running Xara without anything else open - no IE, Outlook, etc and I'm going to see how the PC operates.
Also, can you try to open this file? I don't think it will open because something caused the file to become corrupt.
Thanks

That never even occured to me... dang it. The file is probably lost
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
That file is incomplete, suggesting a write error occurred when Xara tried to save.

Examining the file with a Hex Editor. See the two attached images.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Are these errors Xara related or hardware related?
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Thousands of people use Xtreme without problems.
Without having your machine physically here for me to examine it is very difficult to determine what may be causing your problems.
It could be hardware or it could be conflicts with some other software you have installed. It could be problems other software could have caused during installation.
Too many variables to consider without a complete analysis of your system.
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hi Soquili
I do appreciate your taking the time to help me diagnose what's going on. Another theory is that I might be running too many apps at the same time and unfortunately Xara is the one app that Windows decides to target and shut down.
I have received a few Memory Dump and Physical Memory errors obver the past several weeks. I'm beginning to suspect, this might be a major factor.
What do you think?
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hi SK,
If you're getting these memory errors it might not be a bad idea to test with other memory or remove one and see what happens.....worst case, memory is cheap so you could probably replace it easily enough. That could easily be your problems as could some other things but your logs are as you say showing problems.
Memory dumps are a sign something is wrong, could be memory, glitch in Windows, things like that.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hey Guys,
Is it true that MS XP is unstable if there are more than 3 gbs of ram? I have 4 and I wondering if this is too much?
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
4GB isn't too much if the mainboard can handle it. XP 32bit just can't use it all.
But SK, certainly from all that you have written in this thread, it is clear to me that your PC hardware needs checking, particularly the HDD and RAM.
If you know what you're doing you can check your own hardware for error using the UBCD available here.
There is some technical knowledge required.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
what printers do you have attached/ installed?
This may not be an issue but my surveying software just won't accept a RICOH printer and so I have the default printer set to BlueBeam PDF.
Otherwise it opens a file then crashes unexpectantly. I also get file violation errors and memory issues.
All these go away when I changed printer defaults.
I expect you may well have different printers - work & home.
-
Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
This is a work PC. The default printer a Konica Minolta C353. I've never heard of a printer causing problems - but I've seen stranger things.
I'm running XARA with nothing open (no IE, Outlook, etc) and I'm going to see if the computer running out of virtual memory - which I have also received multiple errors.

Re: Why is XXP5 Spiking the CPU Usage?
Hi All,
Well... I got a new PC this morning and I'm running Windows 7. Unfortunately, Xara crashed once again - another Access Violation Error - I was working with the Mould Tool when the crash happened. However, with the introduction of Windows 7 that opens a whole new can of worms.
BUT... I noticed something strange. Right before Xara crashes the PC begins to slow down. Sometimes Explorer will stop working and Outlook freezes all together. As I stated, it seems like Xara is the one application Windows decides to shut down.
I beginning to think that there is a network issue / anomoly.
What do you think?
