Web Designer importing images wrong size
I'm new to Xara Web Designer but we have a number of jpg images with a resolution of 72ppi and 760 pixels wide. When we import them into a 760 pixel wide page they come in about 500 pixels wide? Any way to bring them in so we don't have to resize them?
Thanks

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
Don't bother replying anyone I've found that this is how the program is designed. A bit bizarre in my opinion - why not set it to the maximum page size like 760. Anyway, I've found the XaReg which can change it.

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
Hello again Keven
72 dpi is default screen resolution for the Mac. Windows screen resolution is 96 dpi. Most Adobe programs insist on 72 dpi even though there many more Windows users than Mac users. And even though Adobe begrudgingly supports both platforms.

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
There was a lengthy thread about the 500pix issue here.

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
At first I thought the 500 pixel resize must be a bug but then realised sadly no! - it was actually coded like that. I mean a 1000 pixel limit would have been too much to ask. This undocumented "feature" wasted a good bit of my time trying to figure out what on earth was going on when trying to import a ridiculously wide, wait for it.... 575 pixel banner
It's frightening how a programmer or software team can arrive at such a daft limit! and accidentally visiting a forum and by chance finding the reason for this crazy behaviour was a real let down.
It must be the old maxim that a camel is a horse designed by a committee.

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
You can set this to your requirements
From the help file.
Quote:
Initial Photo size
When you import a photo into a drawing or web document, by default if it's bigger than 500 pixels wide the photo is automatically scaled down to 500 pixels. This is because it's rarely useful to drop a huge digital camera photo into a drawing document and have it displayed at its full size, so it's scaled down to a more manageable size. You can change this behavior on the View tab of the Utilities->Options dialog:

I must have been taken to an alternative universe or maybe the screenshot is from a distant version of XWD

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
My error, screen shot is from Xara Xtreme 5, forgot which forum I was in.
I would have thought this was possible in some way with XWD though, will have to investigate.

Hi broomcroft
Import your file and check the bitmap gallery. The image appears to be held as full size. I think all you have to do is resize the displayed version.

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
Yeah, Web Designer was "simplified" to make it easier for new users. I wish they would unsimplify it a bit. :D
The image may be reduced to the 500 pixel maximum width but you can resize it as long as the image does not exceed 96 dpi (the resolution is shown on the status bar in the lower left side of the window and changes as the image is resized).

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
The problem is that hindsight is a wonderful thing.
I, and I suspect many others - who remain blissfully unaware - did not realise I had a problem until things didn't look right on previewing the webpage. I did not think for one moment that my 575 pixel wide image would be reduced in any way shape or form at all! so my point is that until I was aware, I was, er totally unaware! and why should I have even suspected as nowhere in the documentation AFIK does it say that this barmy "feature" will occur!
I know now! - that's my point.....
I'm in the product forum to advertise for a time machine to go back and save the time I lost scratching my head and other areas trying to figure out what was going on!!!!!

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
Web Designer Help says:Photos
You can replace any photo by dragging and dropping it from your File Explorer onto any photo in Web Designer. If you drop it onto the background then it is imported and placed on the the page where you dropped it. All imported photos are shown as 500 pixels, but you can of course change this to be any size in the usual way with the Selector tool
You can also, by the way simply resize the photo (precisely) by entering a number at the Size 'H' or 'W' on the infobar.

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
Oh that's alright then. I must remember from now on when using programs that rely on graphics and images that when importing strange things like photopictures I must make allowances for the application to alter them as it sees fit unless I read the help files, that is, if I even noticed it had adjusted them..... er no, I don't think so.
I think you might find that anyone who buys XWD will not realise what is happening when they import an image that is wider than 500 pixels! and if a user drops down a 5MB image onto a webpage without realising the implications of this then they should have their computer taken away.

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
hopefully no-one who knew what they were doing would buy this program without taking advantage of the 30 day trial and learning things like this first ;)

Hey Broomcroft,
I'm brand new to XWD and to be honest, I found the image size very quickly. It depends on what you're doing with the program I think but really, be reasonable. This program is $49, not $490 like many others that aren't nearly as easy to use.
I feel this is great value for money and to be honest, there is a place for these kind of posts....maybe you should suggest the change, though I've seen many others have already.
I really hope you start finding out the great things about this program and help figuring out how to circumvent it's limitations....

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
I'm just fooling around - it is very good value, although I do often wonder how software decisions come about. I mean to implement a resize on images above 500 pixels wide on a program where all standard pre-defined page sizes are above 640 pixels wide is, well, beyond me!!
The simplest solution would be to, yes, resize any image that is larger than the width of the page to the width of the page! That way no-one could get into trouble.

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
Hello Dave (Broomcroft).
You can turn off the resizing of imported photos in Web Designer using XaReg. It is available from the shareware page of the XaraXone.

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
OK one last time...
If Microsoft or Adobe brought out a version of Word, Publisher or Photoshop, or indeed any other program from anyone else that resized images greater than 500 pixels and needed users to log into a product forum to, firstly find out about it and then to, by chance also find out there was a shareware utility program to correct this - I think there would be a few choice posts on the respective forums.

Dave,
It's in the XWD help file if you'd looked (under "Importing Photos" - oddly enough)
Attachment 63578
You been given decent answers, helpful answers. Continuing to complain about it is not going to change anything for this version.
That XaReg (Freeware by the way) was developed by one of the Mods and myself to help users tweak 'out-of-the-box' settings, is testament to the helpful nature of Talkgraphics members.

Adobe does allow trial software. Microsoft makes it's money on using people to troubleshoot their software WHILE paying for it. Choice posts? Sure, because for the most part, people have already paid (BIG BUCKS) for the software.
If it's offered as a trial and you don't take advantage of it and find out it's limitations, it's on you, not the software. The company that offers trial software is offering you a way to see if you like it.....if you don't, just don't buy it, if you do, become a part of the solution, not the problem.
People on this site are looking for answers, and for my part they have been very cooperative, almost entirely without complaint. They are working together to overcome the limitations of (did I mention the program was only $49) XWD. There are some, I've seen some but the software functions perfectly and better than most in that price range and above. No software is everthing to any style it was created for.
Please just enjoy it or let it go.
Thanks,
Ed.......:-)

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
The purpose of the resizing of imported photos is so people do not accidentally create web pages using extremely large files.
Most digital cameras create photos that are larger than most monitor resolutions.
The resizing is a precautionary measure.
You cannot please all of the people all of the time..... ;)

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
Hi Folks
First post... I think this 500 pixel limitation still applies in WD6? Sorry I know it does cos I'm trying to re-create something I created in another app where I have created the images at the exact size and resolution I want...
Do I need to tweak the XaReg thing, or is there another way of doing this in WD6?
Cheers

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
WD6 gives you an option when you import:
Quote:
If you import a photo which is bigger than 1920 pixels wide (HD screen size) or high, you will be asked if you want to import a reduced sized version, instead of the full sized original. For web use you should rarely need your photos to be bigger than this size, so importing a reduced version is almost always desirable. Using reduced sized photos is recommended to keep the size of your design (.web or .xar) file down and to reduce the amount of memory used when editing and exporting your website.

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
'Visually reduced' not physically. See the bitmap gallery.
Also as quoted above, the prompt is displayed when the imported image exceeds 1920px.
You can resize your page image to the same resolution as the original without loss via the info bar..
However as stated by Xara you should rarely need your photos to be bigger than 500pixels.
This is well covered in this thread and the help file.
Welcome to TG by the way Peter :)

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
Well, in this instance I do want this/these images to be wider than 500. They've been designed specifically to be so. I can use the resize in the info bar as you suggest so thanks for that tip.
Is there a means of changing WD6 functionality so that it doesn't re-size images? i.e. Will the XaReg tweak work for WD6?
Cheers
Peter

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
Yes, the XaReg utility is compatible with WD6

Re: Web Designer importing images wrong size
Many thanks. That does the trick for me.
