How to do this...

Hi there,

I've been trying to learn how to use Xara Extreme for a while and just found the motivation and time to do it lately, being retired since last saturday...

Now, what I would like to learn is how to do drawings like this...

Ok, you should know what I'm looking for by now. I searched everywhere for a tutorial on how to do this type of drawing without success.

So PLEASE... if you can forward me to some info I could read and try, be my guess.

Btw, a bit about me... I used both DrawPLus and Xara Extreme for basic drawing, but I would like to stay with XE for now on. The reason I use DrawPlus is because I had vector graphics to do. And until now, I used XE only with photos.

P.S. I also have more things in mind, but I have to start somewhere...

For example, celtic knots in 3D, animations of knotting tutorial (how to tie a knot), etc...

I'm afraid those are actual photographs of tools and not drawings.

DrawPlus and Xara Xtreme (no beginning letter e) are vector drawing applications. Although they can achieve near photographic images what you seem to be after would require a 3D application.

You can download the free Truespace 7.61 from http://www.caligari.com/downloads.html

Other applications that can be used to create 3D images similar to the photos in your links and be created in many applications.

Cinema 4D, Maya, Rhinocerous, Blender, are among many other programs available. Some are free and some are very expensive.

Oops, XX not XE... you're right.

The drawings I posted were made entirely with Solid Works 3D, which I don't have or use.

I always thought that I couldn't do what I want because I didn't know how to work with what I have, but maybe that I really don't use the right programs.

i use solidworks, you could see if there is a trial copy avalible , or autodesk inventor

Truespace 7 can create images similar to those. There is a learning curve with any application. There are video tutorials for Truespace that help speed up the learning process.

The attached image was created 5 years ago when I was taking a class using Cinema 4D.

Cool... that's the kind of things I had in mind...

I'll think I'll give that free program a try. And as it is only for a hobby, I don't want to spend any more $$$ on another drawing program.

Solid Works has a free or trial version but only 2D if I remember well.

Attached is a little practice to keep myself up to date with C4D. Leaving tools out and not using them can lead to a little rust. ;)

You are making me jealous... I wish I could do such graphics...

I began my 3D experiments, trying to learn from the free Blender and Truespace tutorials and videos. That's a lot to learn, but I have plenty of time.

It's more work than I thought, but I'll see what I can do.

I produced a quick model for the fun of it, please excuse the imperfections. ;) This is how I did it.
I made the blade from a sweep profile, then I flattened the point with boolean operations. Next I made the bezel or what ever you call it from a cone primative, next came the handle, I used a cylinder primative, then the button on the end, a sphere primative. I used a boolean operation on the sphere to get rid of about two thirds of it, then I scaled it to flatten it out a bit. I used 3 shaders for the color, a dull silver and a dull gold for metal materials, a shinny black for the handle. I rendered the model with global illumination and an environment map for reflections. :cool:

I exchanged the black handle for a nice wooden one. :rolleyes:

If you can still get 3D World June it has a free copy of Realsoft 3D ver 5 and

PC Advisor June has Carrara 6 Pro free, need to register, no restrictions.

Anyway doing it in xara is a really cool challenge and you'll learn a lot doing it

ok, appart from the joke I'm fighting with truespace and I'm not getting to do anything, I didn't find a good tutorial as exists to xara in xaraxone.
What tool do you recommend me to learn?.

I would really suggest you take the suggestion to grab the free copy of Carrara v6 Pro. It is a very nice modeling and rendering program. It can do what you see in these images. You may want to take a look at the Carrara forums at Daz 3D _http://www.daz3d.com. Daz 3D owns Carrara. They are pretty active and are good about answering questions. :)

I would get Bryce 5.5 , to compliment Silo for rendering. Its a really cool program and its free from Daz.

Did I mention it is free? The only problem is you need to create an account with Daz, if thats not a problem and you could use a real nifty 3D rendering engine then go get it.
Bryce does a lot of stuff.
