Xara Web Designer is focused on the absolute positioning of design elements to ensure true WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) across the various currently popular browsers. As far as I am aware, xWD does not support frames.
The concept of frames is cool, but the real world implementation is invariably inadequate.
Web Designer can link to frames (see attached).
But I bet there is an easy workaround in WD.
What do you like about frames? Perhaps we can work backwards.
It's kind of odd isn't it that WD includes the 'Open Link In' targets for framesets when WD cannot itself create these framesets. 'Framesets' are HTML methods.
Of course you can add iframes via a placeholder, these iframes can load content from a named page in your web design, so you can build a kind of frameset in this way.
Eg: A placeholder to load a page named menu.htm in an iframe, a placeholder to load a page named main.htm in an iframe and so on.
Here's a (rough and ready) example of what I mean.
Open it in Web Designer and then preview.
Steve - That is a good work around.
Could you achieve the same thing with layers?
I can't think why not. Though layering might get tricky.
The 'page' method might be is easier to get your head around when migrating from Dreamweaver's HTML 'frameset' mindset?
It's certainly easy to re edit in WD and see everything without having to hide/unhide layers.
A really compelling discussion with an excellent example. Thank you (all) for your dedication to this forum. BTW - where does the green come from on the mouseover? Chris
Nice one, Steve. Thanks for sharing your frameset example.
That is a very cool example, Steve! One of the problems with using frames is that web page printing is a bit unpredictable for the site visitor. With your example, would printing address more than the current frame?
I just uploaded Steve's frames-example to see how printing might behave.I note that as part of the File > Print dialog there is a tab called Options (should a site visitor realize that it's there ...). There I can instruct it to print the page in three different ways:
- Printing the page before clicking anywhere will print all page elements.
- Clicking LINK 1 in the left navigation pane will make that frame active. A File > Print will print only the navigation pane.
- Mouse clicking on any other pane, then printing, results in a partial page print.
- As laid out on screen
- Only the selected frame
- All frames individually
Printing frames is browser dependant, handling frame printing in various ways.
With IE, you can right-click a menu link and select 'Print Target' or right-click the frame contents and select 'Print'
Firefox uses the term 'Print this frame' when using the right-click context menu for a frame link or the frame content.
If you are producing a site with printable content in mind, it might be just as easy to provide a link to a printable version of that page or a prepared PDF version for printing.
Of course the better method might be to add <a href="javascript:print();">Print this page</a> placeholder to the page to print. It will only print the page in which the script is added.
Steve,
I am having a little problem with Iframes. I was OK until I loaded IE7. Now the slider doesn't function when attempting to scroll the text. If I dont have a slider e.g. your frames examples, I have no problem viewing, everything functions as it should. Could it be possible that I don't have a setting right in IE7?
Rupert
my reason for asking about frames is another site I maintain uses a frame at the bottom to keep a music player always with the visitor. I want to start useing WD for that page as there are many less hasseling features I like in this other than my cluelessness of frames
Thanks Steve. It is funny that it worked before in IE6. Now I will go through my other Iframes and check them.
Rupert
That fixed them all. Thanks Steve.
Border to the back!!
Rupert.
There has been some discussion in this thread and others within this forum about the benefits of and problems associated with frames (like this thread, for example).
Are there similar problems that occur when using precisely overlapping, locked popup layers? Consider the attached .web fiile as an example. Thanks.
EDIT -- Looking through the generated source, I see no reference to "frame" ...
Cursor,
I ran your file with no problem.
I don't know whether this is relevant but I had trouble with a mouse over when viewed in IE7 (OK in 6). I put the border back one step and that fixed it. Similar to what Steve suggested to get the Iframes working again.
Rupert
to all...
I don't know if it has been discussed but, i'm trying to "insert" a form created in my host "from tool" and it is a link to a page that contains the form..
From what I read I still don't get how you can reference another URL in to a "window" area inside my XWD web page...
simple but I'm no "coder" and barely make out the java scripts from what you guys post here regularly...
thanks
Through the use of an iframe through a placeholder. See my post in the 'SimpleViewer on new website' thread. You can put any web page in your website this way.
This is really cool! Learning many ways to use Xara.
Tested the iframeset.web and i have a question.
bottom: How is the text, Link1 able to link to page link1?
When viewing the Name Tags, or Web Properties, there is no link, yet it works!
Sadicus - it is linked.
You have included a space in the highlighted text. Make sure you highlight only 5 characters Link1
understood! thank you
