Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Are there any ideas how to produce buttons / forms / textareas / drop down html fields in WD ?
with stylesheets connected to it?
that would be really great ...
and a possibility to "export" the CSS to a CSS File ? is there a way to do this?
thx for answers before buy ;-)
greetings michael

There are no visual tools to create forms (buttons, text fields, dropdown fields e.t.c.). But, if you can create HTML code for your form, you can easily insert it into your WD document.

And for example a script like Lightbox 2.04 ? Or SimpleViewer ? Can they be integrated ?

Lightbox is not a snippet. It can be embedded but there's no way to set "rel='lightbox'" property for objects that are supposed to use it. Unless you insert all these objects manually too.
However, WD has a built in image preview pop up capability similar to Lightbox.
Generaly speaking, you can embed any raw html code, including scripts, stylesheets e.t.c. within WD document.

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
hmmm
that seems not that there's a lot missing.
because nearly every website (and a lot of PDF files) need fields and sumit buttons / radio boxes etc to operate normally..
would be a lot of additional coding - and not straight forward coding.
we tried to work out a website with xara ... perfect in the interface but no way to produce good separation of css and html.
there may be less functionality in design - a better way. or some different modes ...
design a website as a "portal" website - with a lot of stuff coming from backend databases and RoR integration or PHP or something else. and the possibility to make shiny website presentations ....
my personal thoughts about the new product:
add forms and clear separation (TAG holding) for text ... means good perfect visual design with the ability to separate layout from real content completly
just my 2 cents....

Yes, but, unfortunately, if I understand you correctly, clearing separation for text shall make it not visual, or precisely speaking, not WYSIWYG anymore.

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Hi John,
isn't it possible to create two different export modes:
- WYSIWYG (with the acquiescence of tons of <div> tags) and
- optimized mode (with flexible floated layouts)

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Hello Remi.
There is no floating objects concept in Xara so it is not possible to create flexible floated layouts as you suggest.
-
Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Yes, I see what you mean. There is much more time and internal changes necessary to develop adequate tools for handling flexible floated layouts.

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Regarding forms and interactivity, Coffeecup software produce a range of interactive modules for video, audio, etc and their Website Form Builder (http://www.coffeecup.com/form-builder/) is excellent, is highly configurable and will write to a text file as well as submit to multiple email addresses. There are online form generators but the CC WFB isn't limited in any way and includes CAPTCHA which some providers only include as a paid monthly add-on.I've used it with the web export from Xara Xtreme Pro 4 in a place holder without any issues and give it a ride with XWD as soon as I get hold of a copy.

Hi....
That depends on: What you are doing with a website.
For example I personally often use blueprint.css for clear layouts. Means if there's a mode - like blueprint (attach the DIVs) to a grid in terms of width, not height.. this would be really wonderful.
Why WYSIWYG -OR- DATABASE Mode ;-)
Wysiwyg is more presentation
Database Mode - getting all the stuff from background ...
I normally develop most prototypes with Xara ... but coding itself is a lot of handwork...
Placeholders for collapsable DIVs:
Would be a great deal...
for example - design wysiwyg site - text inserted from database, if too much text - grow div with a mouseclick ....
could be a slick and shiny WYSIWYNG interface ;-)

Or, perhaps, add a scroller to the text block? Would it be ok?

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
There are some sites that let you create a form and then import the code into Web Designer such as JotForm.
You can paste the script into the Website Properties > Placeholder > Replace with HTML Text text entry box.
However, as John has warned, you cannot have any layers on this page, so any navigation buttons have to be on the MouseOff layer.
I have tried this and it is a pretty decent solution. The forms are free or for $9.95 US a month you can have advanced features such as captcha, that text you have to enter before you can submit the form.

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Hi bayoda,
I'm with you. I design all my projects with Xara Xtreme, but wouldn't use the absolute positioning HTML/CSS code of Xara's HTML export filter (and have discussed this fact here at TG almost too often). I code my (X)HTML/CSS websites just like you - by hand.
I don't use blueprint, but YAML in order to create flexible floated layouts (see also #1).
The reason for my question was, that I wonder why Xara don't try to develop an alternative export mode, in order to make their product more usable for someone like you and me.

Let me assure you that this approach was considered as early as the first html export filter development for the XXP4. No doubt, we would like to add this possibility. Though, as you say, it would involve too much changes to the Xtreme for a short run. But we make our steps in that direction. As you'll see in WD (soft groups, repeating objects, smart footers). Still there's no concept of the dynamic flow, but it's now a bit easier to implement in future versions.

Yes,
you are right but what is if your client has a high security setting in his office - he is not able to see this form because it has flash-elements in it - if this is not so important than this tool is O.K. but if not he cannot see, and send anything to you...

What kind of form editor would you like to see? Can you show the example of software that produces acceptable result?

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Hi John,
nearly same as it is in NetObjects or other Web-editors, but it should be possible to choose the script by myself to add it into my site for instance i create my whole form like the attached one:
but to load my script for instance here as a php-script from this site, or any other free script that is aviable from the net:
http://aktuell.de.selfhtml.org/artikel/php/form-mail/
beginning with the <? and ending with ?>
Maybe for the average user it makes sense to implement such a script into the default settings of Xara Web Designer; but it should be as simple as the rest of the program is.

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
I see. So this is a basic form editor with controls provided by html only. If I get you right, it shall not generate any JS, only single <form> element with necessary <input> elements within. Crrect?

Yes, and the rest does the "action" and then the form gets the action to run this what i have told in my php-script...

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Ok. Thank you.
This somewhat differs from most online form builders, including JotForms, as they tend to propose additional functionality.
Though, I think, it is possible to create such basic form builder as a standalone application.

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
The Coffeecup solution takes minutes to implement and for the majority of cases it may well be the answer: http://www.bostoninternet.co.uk/index.htm
The reply page hasn't been set in this example.

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
There's a load of interactivity available here for $5a shot...

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Why don't you search for free tools, instead of CoffeeCup or other commercial JavaScript snippets?
-
Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
I won't use anything that carries a branding as many free scripts do or you have to pay for the "Pro" version. If necessary I will always pay for de-branding where that is an option if I use a script that has that option. No-one wants a site that says "Gadgets by Thingamejig", well at least not someone who is paying good money. The main problem though with free stuff is that the developer moves on/loses interest and you are left in the lurch.
The "free" stuff that I use is things like Ubuntu, Joomla and Moodle, they are mature and won't go away, they have massive user bases. As regards Coffeecup, they are an established company that provide life-long free updates... and their stuff works.
Perhaps a definitive list of free and paid scripts for implementing various things could be established as opposed to trawling through the forum.

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Ok, but I think after 16 posts from your side with recommendings for CoffeeCup software it's not necessary to repeat them twice in one thread (postings #11 and #25).

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Just trying to help... there's no affiliate benefit or anything on my part. FWIW there is quite a bit of interest in the form generator which I recommend as the demo that I set up sends me a notification every time it's submitted.
I accept that paid options cost money but you get what you pay for and the one that I use is the best value by far even if it does cost almost as much as XWD, which itself is exceptional value for money!

Hi John,
I just purchased WD a few days ago and love working with it. I am looking to find out how to add a script for my google adsense and see you said we can add that in WD, can you tell me how that is done? Where do I go to place that code?
Thanks

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Hi Donna,
Create rectangle in your design that represence the location and size of your addon on your page. Select it. Open Web Properties dialog (Ctrl+Shift+W). Open "Placeholder" tab. Paste your snippet code into the "Replace with HTML code" filed. Click on "Apply" button.
That's it. :)

Re: Forms and interactive Elements in WD ?
Hi John,
THANK YOU so much, that is great, I never would have figured that one out! Is there a manual anywhere for the Web designer?
Thanks
