Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
SPECIAL EDITION WORKBOOK
NEW XARA WEB DESIGNER PREVIEW
The new Xara Web Designer is almost here (available early next week) and trust me, you're going to love it! You can create your website in a very Xtreme like interface will all the tools you already know how to use and some new web-specific tools as well. The entire Workbook was produced in Web Designer and it was fun and surprisingly easy!
You can edit your text and SPELL CHECK IN A SELECTION OF LANGUAGES. And you can FTP your files directly to your web host right inside Web Designer. Flash movies have never been easier to embed, as well as website tracking code, and a ton of other really cool stuff.
In this special edition, I cover what's new and how it all comes together.
Check it out, and please let me know your reaction.

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Great news Gary.
I'm reading page 1 and it seems the paragraph about web safe fonts ends prematurely.
Quote:
...that certain fonts may not appear on many visitors computers and may be displayed as Arial or
Times Roman instead. (You can always group this text with another object in which case
The next paragraph begins about double click on any bitmap...

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Thanks for the detailed information Gary.
Looks sweet. Man, I want to buy it now, I'm about to start a new website design for a client. This will streamline the process a lot.

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
it seems an amazing program.
2 questions:
-I have written my own content management system for my clients to easily update their content. Can i use webdesigner?
-(regardless of the above)If i design a site for someone else, how does he/she update the content without the program?
thanks!
Matt

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
One more question from me Gary.
On Page 5 there is some overlapping of text and a link. Is it my browser or is it seen by everyone. See attached image.
Anyone can answer my question. Do you see that area of Page 5 of Gary's workbook as in my attached image?
Never mind....I answered my own question using different browsers and different computers. For some unknown reason one of my computers wants to place a random Amazon.com add in that space.

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
I hope that it is being sold stand alone, looks like it is. Nice workbook Gary.
-
Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Looks like a big improvement over the tools bundled with Xara4. I looked at your workbook Gary and checked the source files. These seem pretty clean and, I suppose, editable (although a zillion divs). Is this source code right out of the box, you didn't have to fiddle it?
I'm tempted to buy it, good price, but maybe I'll wait until some others have worked with it and commented on it here.
-
Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Bill - I am not seeing any problem with the web safe fonts text. What browser are you using?
Bruce - It will be sold as a stand alone.
Marcia - It should be available for download and sale early next week. Xara is doing some final tweaks.
Matt - The program is retailing for about $50 US. Your client will need to have a copy of Web Designer to do updates.
-
Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Just received by mail:
The program costs just $49 for US customers, £39 inc VAT in the EU. Better still if you have Xtreme 4 or Webstyle 4 you can purchase Web Designer for just $29 or £23 inc VAT (this is an introductory 2 month offer).
I'm buying it :)

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Gary,
Thanks for all your work introducing us all to Web Designer.
I did though notice that when you go to the 5th page of your tutorial that it opens up in the middle of the page. This seems like strange behavior for a webpage. Any idea why this is happening?

As you may see, there are numerous snippets inserted in this page. The Google snippet has code that transfers focus to it when the page is loaded. So it scrolls to this snippet.

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
So John, was this done intentionally to prove some feature of Web Designer?

I don't know. This we have to ask Gary about. ;) I just know why it works this way.
BTW - beware with all those snippets, quite a lot of them are badly programmed and may inroduce some unexpected behaviour to the page, or even brake it down. Please note, that all pages from this site successfully pass W3C validation except for page 5, because most snippets used there don't validate.

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
John, thank you for the response and explanation.

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
I inserted all those Google gadgets and the YouTube video to show how easily this can be accomplished. I tried some of the same gadgets in NetObjects Fusion 11 and had the same results with the page scrolling to the center.
I guess the smart thing to do if you are using Google gadgets or plug-ins (and Xara plans to include a list of recommended gadgets and how to set them up) place them at the top of your page.
The possibilities here are incredible given the fact that there are in excess of 64,000 Google gadgets available. And of course there are also public domain scripts you can embed and even some of the effects from Xara On-Line.
There is a complete list of all the features posted here.
Charles Moir turned me on to a really no-brainer free web-based form tool http://jotform.com/ that creates custom or wizard generated form code which you can paste into Web Designer to add forms. They have a pay version which lets you add captcha, the words you have to key in correctly before you submit the form. The pay version is under $10 US a month and if you do a lot of forms, it's a steal.
-
Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Gary, JotForm snippets can be used only if you don't use popups and rollovers. These snippets assume that there's no other scripts on page and may break it if it's not so.

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
It would be a nice bonus if it can import Webstyle 4 materials...

It's hard to say no to an offer like that! :-)

Question for Gary
In X4, if you create a button bar using the round-cornered-rectangles, then it automatically explodes the rectangle.
What happens in Web Desigener?

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Good point John. So then you have to place your form on its own page and only with the first layer. You can different layers for different pages, correct?
Here's an example of how to add a multi-clock Google gadget to your page.
Go to the Google Gadgets page and select a gadget like the multiple clock gadget.
Configure the settings you want to use. In this case, I selected two clocks (you can have up to 9, I think), UK and New Mexico.
Note the size, 320 x 300 on the page.
When you are finished configuring your clocks, click Get The Code.
Google produces a snipped of code. Copy this code to the clipboard.
Create a placeholder rectangle the same size as indicated (320 x 300) and position it where you want it on the page.
Open Website Properties > Placeholder tabbed section, and paste the code in the Replace With HTML Code box. Press Apply.
Press Export and Preview Website.
A browser window opens and shows the page with the working gadget.

Hi Gary,
i have tried it with Fusion 11 everything works good - i can place the gadget or youtube video without that the page scrolls to the gadget or video just look at it:
www.visual-net.de/gadget
So i do not know, why in this example site it scrolls down to it...that was the first time i heard it this way because i often embeded for instance Youtube videos in a Fusion Website, without the "scrolling" and "center"-effect.

Must be the German version? :-)
Perhaps John Horn can explain this. I cannot.

Just returning to Bills post #6 here's a screengrab from FF & IE. As John say's looks like poor scripting in the plug-ins
.

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Thanks Egg. Using IE7 on my Vista Ultimate machine I still see the extra graphic and text. Using Firefox 3.0 it displays correctly.
It is strange because using IE7 on my Vista Home Premium and XP SP3 machines it displays correctly.

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Wow, VERY impressive program--can't wait to try it out.
A few important questions:
1) Can XWD import existing websites (i.e. Frontpage or Sitespinner)?
2) Can XWD create pages with fields that can be edited by others? Say I want to design a site with four separate areas where each area can only be updated by me or by a specific department.
-
Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
Welcome Frank,
Basically no to both questions. XWD is a root a graphics program that creates html pages. It doesn't work in reverse. To change the site, you change the graphics not any underlaying html (In fact the html doesn't exist until you export it.)
On your second point again not in the traditional manner but there's nothing stopping xar sharing between departments to achieve the same results.

I figured as much, but "always ask".

But I don't want them to accidentally move or redesign anything by accident, so having an app that would let users edit just an area of a Web Designer page they've been given rights to do so would be awesome!
Thanks for the quick answers...now waiting 'til "mid-week". :D

You have used wrong snippet. The scrolling is done by this one:
<script src="http://www.gmodules.com/ig/ifr?url=http://blog.outer-court.com/homepage/miniweb.xml&synd=open&w=320&h=190& title=Mini+Web&border=%23ffffff%7C3px%2C1px+so lid+%23999999&output=js"></script>
Try it.

Webdesigner - Form design? Buttons / Fields?
Is there some enhancement to populate fields or something like that?
that would be cool too for Xara to produce PDFs with forms
but seems that there's nothing like that actually ... ?
any ideas?
thx for answer - if this would come true - wow ! - where's the online shop....

Hi John,
yes, you are right - for this i would not use this module if it forces me that the rest of my homepage gets ignored...and this exactly is the case because it forces the user to first put his eyes on this gadget before he can take a look at the rest...

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
I would sure want it, the question is, how am I going to pay for it.
Ditched my creditcard and I don`t have paypal. Hmm, have to figure out
how to pay now ;)

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
...i had taken a look at it and it looks great!
Yes it is a big step forward for us webdesigners; but one serious question is:
Is this webdesign feature implemented in the next release of Xtreme Pro 5?
My answer is clearly yes it will be, if you see the similar look of the program interface and the politics of Xara:
For instance they selling
Screenmaker 3D - This one is implemented in XARA 3D
a part of XARA 3D is implemented now in Xtreme so i am quite shure that
Xara Webdesigner will make it into the next Version of Xtreme...
Everyone of us who had used Xara-Webstyle and Xtreme maybe had often thought: It would be great to combine to programs together and now, it seems that this step is succeed because of the similar interfaces and it is only a programers code away to implement both programs together!
So maybe the reason to wait for the next release of Xtreme, because it is shure that everyone of us will update to the next version, isn't it.

I don't think it's so straightforward. It might be more attractive commercially for Xara to reign back web feature development on Xtreme to encourage customers to buy both programs. They've kinda made a rod for their own back with this release - if Xtreme includes this new functionality, will Xtreme owners that upgrade Xtreme be paying twice over for these new features? Should Xtreme owners just wait and see what's on the way for Xtreme? Could this herald a return to illustration roots for Xtreme?
I think it could be a good juncture to channel development of future web features away from Xtreme. Interesting times, whatever they do.
That said, the new software looks like a great product and a bargain. It should sell like hot cakes and could well outperform Xtreme as a revenue engine.

Welcome to the Xtreme Conference bayoda :)
There is no form tool but as I pointed out in an earlier post, there is are several form gadgets which can be used to create forms.
The PDF export is not an option. I just had a peek.

Methods of Payment:
http://site.xara.com/ordering/offline.asp
Also, for Paypal, just sign up on their site. It only takes 2 minutes or so. You don't need a credit card, you can transfer direct from your bank account to Paypal, then purchase from Xara with Paypal. Not a big deal once you've done it.

Re: Xara xone special edition: Xara web designer preview!!!
I am new to web design, my concern would be, and maybe you experts in web design can help me out.
My concern is that the code this program outputs is it understandable and done correctly for any web designer to go in and add or edit using dreamweaver or other authoring software?
How is the code?
