Looks pretty good Stu! Sure looks like he has got lots of fire power!
Cheers Randy http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Ya not usually exactly my gig,but I was intrigued by these things and their structure for being able to walk. Most fun was denting the beastie up.The fire power was just what I thought might be realistic.
An update with some more grime and a friend gave me the idea for decals, not a big decal fan but they seem to work ok here I think.
Hey Stu.. nice mech...
This thing will look great within a scene... yikes http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Hey, got a wireshot for this beastie?
Looks good!...but seems very dark in coloring here -- perhaps will have more lighting on it in the scene?? I like the roughed up texturing and all the details. I'm not really wild about the red decals though...just something about them on the upper leg areas especially...seems too much or something in that area. I like the subtle one on the lower leg above the foot though. Less is more sometimes. Seems like the robot could use some sort of lights on it -- perhaps for tracking or scanning objects...another way to add a bit of color and maybe an excuse for colored reflections or glow on the metal here and there for interest so it isn't just monochromatic and dark. Just a thought. Nice modeling! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Excellent modeling Stu. I agree with Maya. I think maybe an ID number or something similar would be the maximum decal for a Mech.
The Mac/PC gamma differences has probably made the image darker than what you see. CRT monitors for PCs are darker than LCD or plasma monitors. I see your image very clearly with very good distressed metalic textures.
Thanks Gidge http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif..wire shot ya can do.. Its not one piece though eh.
Thanks Maya,ya the decal design is some jpgs a friend gave me,at about 1am so I kinda fired them on there and went to bed.As for lights inside the cicular mesh on the front is a lazer, forgot to put some glass tex on the inner poly loop in it.I wanted to get away from colored lights as well as its in a daytme scene/will be in a daytime scene.
Bill thanx http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Ya it needs an ID number, there is one on the side but I dont like it much,so will make another one,and some decent decals I think.
Excellent,I use a Mac and lcds and I generally render the image and then use the view menu in Photoshop, add an adjustment layer of levels and lift the middle slider to around 1.2 is usually ok,although it is a little dark to me today,I posted about 1:30 am think t was my time,so when you viewed it was it at night or during the day?,as I would like to get my levels adjustments a bit better.I have my monitor synced using Adobe Gamma and my NEC settings, but I was not aware CRT monitors for PC are darker then LCD,my LCD {NEC} came with a kind of yellowish tint so I changed to a cool blue white point to compensate.
Ah, okay, I see those areas at the top which would be glass lenses. It will look great in a daylight scene! I am using an LCD monitor -- but Windows XP might be the reason for the darker appearance on my screen...but the first robot posted at the top looks brighter to me than the second one with the decals...that image looks much darker to me. But fairly clear, though. Probably would be easier to see all the robot details if on a lighter colored background...but nevertheless it's looking great and am looking forward to seeing it do its stuff in the scene you create for it. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

ya the top one is lighter, the second has more grime.
This is the look I wanted, glowing guns was just an experiment.
Oh yeah! IMO the glowing guns really add a sense of something going to happen. Plus I just like the additional colors and the glow effect adds interest to it too. I like it! This was a good "experiment" in my view. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
---Maya
Yes, I likes it.
That looks pretty durn cool Stu... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Looks very good. The glow give the impression he is ready for anything. Fully charged and ready to start blasting http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Maybe my monitor is off, I couldn't see the model Stu so I brightened your image up a little bit. Its to cool of a mech. to be hidden in the dark.
Cheers Mike http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Woow thats real bright on my end now,its meant to be blackish in color.Does that now look really light to you Mike, like say polished aluminium or say mild steel? http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Thanks guys http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
This is about where the lighting looks right on my monitor, with a levels adjustment to 1.2 for the Mac to Windows calculation.
Hopefully the lighter background might be a bit better.
Yea, they both look good, and the lighter bg is alot better... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Just my 2 cents -- I've gotta hand it to ya Mike, I love the bright metal version you posted! I agree this is too good to be hidden in the dark.
The lighter background helps with the blackened metal version...but it's still soooo dark...but I think the potential of the brighter metal mech is very high, especially considering it's being added to a daylight scene. (Or perhaps the blackened version could be lightened up by the addition of dusty surfaces....) I think it would fit in and look like it belonged in a daylight scene, and its highlights would keep it from looking like it was composited into the scene. I like the brighter version best so far, it shows off all the details better, the textures also.
Anyway, it's coming along! Nice work!

Stu, You got night vision http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Is that lighting what you plan for the final image?
It was bud,but it looks like I need to sort some better callibration again http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif...didnt realize it was that dark...,and the bright version to me is like highly polished aluminium which is over polished,so off to the callibration mines I think..
Stu, The brightened image does have the appearance of stressed aluminium. Your last image is better, I can see the entire model, but I can't make out the decal on the leg. Is that the way you want it? Your images have always been dark, I just assumed that was your style.
ah cheers,I never realized my images were over dark, medium dark but not meant to be over dark.
New gamma and callibration this time http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
{OT}I dont know if I asked you this before or not Mike {crap memory} have you caught the show American chopper?,you would really enjoy it.

Much better Stu, http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Yes I have watched some of the chopper building shows, I don't care for Orange County choppers, watching those guys argue isn't my idea of intertainment.
great http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Ya,I kinda wonder about that dad who runs the business, hes kinda odd at times in his behavior, but I do enjoy the fabrication part, whih there isnt enough of http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
What a HUGE improvement! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Now it finally looks illuminated AND yet still of a dark metal that's grimey. This is a good calibration. The use of the light blue background helps greatly also.
I have to agree also with Mike, most of your images in the past are overwhelmingly dark and in shadows, like so much is being hidden...that works fine for the night scenes like the space dock sort...but a great many of the other images you've done were too dark...whether it was to do with the gamma or your visual perception difficulties, most of the images you've done (except the night ones) would benefit in some lightening...this one sure has as a good example.
---Maya
Ha, this looks good Stu... ikes, I can only imagine how hard it is to calibrate for a OS setiing that is not sitting in front of you (Windows) ...
Maybe a trip to the local puter store which carries PC's, and dialing to this thread from one of the display PC's at said store will allow you to better see what everybody is seeing here http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gifI just want to say, I hope you don't think anyone here is just trying to be rough on ya, Stu. Most of us know about the visual and perceptual difficulties you struggle with...and maybe there's this feeling that perhaps constructive crits --- although you've told me you always appreciate --- ought to just be left out about your WIP because of your situation, that it might make some reticent to mention things, or to just not bother you with them...but in the end, if we don't speak up and mention things like the darkness problem with your images, you will never know (as you stated you weren't aware of it), and that really doesn't do you any favors in the end. Please don't think the crit on it is just nit-picking. I don't think you'd be posting these images unless you wanted suggestions for improvement. So that's what they are...just "suggestions" meant to be constructive...meant to be helpful if you want to use them.

Cheers guys http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Maya - no,no problem,I didnt realize the LCD had further tweaked the gamma more into the dark spectrum yet again.Nit picking is cool.
Gidge - ya it is tricky,my monitors are NECs,and of course they come with fully tweaked out hot rodded color profiles for them, but fir XP,so I am having to sort of stumble along as I go,but my gamma is now 2.06 which is supposedly native with a different white point so I might leave it here.It had a yellow cast when I first strted them so I used a cool blue as a compensation, but that combined with the gamma of 1.8 was probably the problem.

quote:
but I do enjoy the fabrication part, whih there isnt enough of

Yep, I enjoy seeing the metal working too.
I built my own english wheel several years ago.
Its not pretty but it works like a charm. I can beat a piece of sheet metal into shape then smooth out the hammer marks or just start wheeling and raise the metal without hammering.
Its a cool thing to have if you want to do sheet metal forming.
Stu, it's looking great!! I like the darker versions as well as the latest.
http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Ditto! Looking great!

Ya I know what you mean Mike, they are used for forming panels like they make for old cars, has a foot lever and you roll it backwards and forwards under the wheel.Made your own good stuff http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Thanks guys http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
I remade the textures from the ground up basically, some more tweaking to do yet though.
Stu.
and with tweaks.
I really like the last render Stu!! Wonderful job!
Hey, Stu -- just keeps lookin' better every day! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif What are the white spots all over it? There are a lot of bigger "triangular spots" of very similar size and shape too....maybe if they varied a bit more, or less of them in some areas, they would look less uniform. Seems just a bit too many little white spots on the feet and various places. (I'm nit-pickin)Not bad though, probably only me seeing too many of them spots... It's lookin' good!
---Maya
Stu, I think this is the best!!!
Maya, I think those white spots are where the grime has been knocked off by automatic weapons fire http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Thanks Randy,Maya and Soquili http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Yep Bill wins the prize http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif ,they are areas where grimes has been removed by rubbing and bullets etc maybe, but also little specs of specular or scratches through the layers of paint.I agree though the patches dont look the same up top as they do in other places,ah the joys of balancing a myriad of different specular settings in your materials..... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Hmm maybe some dust might help..
http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif HOLD IT RIGHT THERE! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/eek.gif PERFECTION! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
(yeah I know, you'll probably go on tweaking it yet...but this latest one looks just SPECTACULAR, and again a big step above that first one you posted, SO MUCH SO that I think he's ready to cause some serious damage now!) http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Seriously, just some dust from whatever scene you put him in and you're good to go! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/cool.gif
---Maya
Yep! Looks great Stu.
