Magix Xtreme limitations?
I've searched Talkgraphics, but can't really find a definitive answer to my question.
So here it goes: can someone confirm from first hand experience that Magix Xtreme has the same functionality as Xara Xtreme 3.2 (not pro of course) and there are no limitations whatsoever?

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
Magix software product range information is available from their UK website.
They appear to be bolting together XaraXtreme and their Magix photo software into a hybrid application they call Xtreme Photo & Graphic Designer.
I could be wrong, but I'd consider XaraXtremePro to be the best all 'round choice currently. I'd be curious to test XP&GD - but as they offer no trial it's not possible, at least for the moment.
You'll probably have more luck getting answers from Magix users by visiting their own support forum rather that here, however there's a catch - you need to be a registered user of their software in the first place.

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
@henkwww: Not sure, about the differences between the Magix product and Xara Xtreme. Xara should describe the differences on their homepage.

You don't need to register, you can click the "Forum betreten" button. Unfortunately you'll find no more infos about Magix Xtreme Foto & Grafik Designer at the Magix forum. There are only two threads about Xtreme available. (btw: As far as I see it's also a forum powered by Magix users, not from Magix employees.)

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
Thank you for the replies!
Since I'm using Xara almost exclusively for web design, I don't have that much use for the pro version.
I just ordered Magix Xtreme in Dutch for EUR 54 including VAT and delivery. If it's really a rebranded Xara Xtreme, it'd be a real bargain.
I'll report back with my findings...

Xara (UK) have nothing that I can see to describe any differences, they do however have links to the German Version of XaraXtremePro and I'm not referring to Magix badged Xtreme Photo & Graphic Designer - I'm referring to XXP German version as sold for € 349,99 - a big difference in price and as henkwww states "If it's really a rebranded Xara Xtreme, it'd be a real bargain. (EUR 54 including VAT and delivery)"
Not knowing German I can't read the text, but the site has similar layout and graphics to the UK version, if that's anything to go by?

Remi, the UK version of the MAGIX support page found HERE clearly states: "Only registered users will have access to the downloads, tutorials and the forum of the MAGIX support site." I think I posted the wrong link before which resolved to the German language site.
However you're right that clicking the Enter The Forum button does give you access to at least read posts, I didn't bother clicking when I last looked.
This is a general forum for users to discuss all MAGIX software with subforums for a particular application, however I could find no subforum listed to specifically discuss Xtreme or any current threads menioning Xtreme (UK version of the site).
So yes please henkwww, I welcome your report - please let us know your findings :)

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
There is a trial version of Magix Xtreme Foto & Grafik Designer available, but only a german version (as far as I see).

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
I just downloaded the trial version and I can confirm that if your computer is setup for English, everything displays in English. Also, I can confirm that the trial contains a full (with some things disabled) version of Xara Xtreme. The one thing that I found that didn't work were the live effects. So if you are looking for a cheep version of Xtreme this would seem to be it.

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
Great find!
Magix removed CMYK, but more importantly, I'm missing the Profile button for fill, transparency, feather, shadow.
I used that function frequently, so I think I'll have to cancel my order and get the regular Xara Xtreme.

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
I was reasonably curious until the download manager reported trial_fotografikdesigner_de.exe to be a 157.8mb file.. With features pruned away as reported by henkwww, why the extra megabytes me wonders?
Welcome to the bloat boat :(?
Comparison:
XaraXtreme 3.2 - 46.5MB dl
XaraXtremePro - 49.6MB dl

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
Hi Steve,
You forgot something, the clipart, movies and such are not in the download
they are on the cd tho, this makes pro 170mb
Hans

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
This wasn't my point.
I was comparing the downloadable trial versions.
Or are you saying the clipart and movies are included with the MAGIX trial download then?
-
Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
There's Magix Photo Manager 2008 in it, some other programs and example files.
-
Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
Updated list of missing features:
- Colors: CMYK
- Clipart gallery
- Name gallery (and Name objects)
- Create / edit brush
- Text: space before / after paragraph
- Profiles for 1) contour, 2) fill, 3) shadow, 4) transparency, 5) feather, 6) blend

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
clipart should be there - has different icon , as do quite a few items
the clipart appears to be included in the download - probably one reason for its size?
default set up different too - eg give new objects most recent attributes ticked by default in options/general
-
Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
Steve, you're absolutely right about the clipart.
Missing the profile function is the big difference. I'm amazed that Magix removed this from the original Xara program.
-
Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
Does seem strange yes - but I guess it is not intended to be the same product, and not at the same price... :D .
PS - not exactly the same clipart either is it
-
Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
Is anybody sure that these features have been taken out of the product or is it possible that they have just been disabled for the trial version? I don't know if anybody has installed the purchased version or not.
Just a question...

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
Fair point - since my German is not that good cannot check that :o

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
My German is pretty good...I'll have to check it out when I get time later....

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
Thanks Eric - it would be nice to know
-
Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
I took another look at their website and it doesn't say one way or another if any of the functions are disabled in the trial. Maybe Charles and company know something more.
Sorry but their website isn't much help. I also looked for some similar wording around their other pieces of software trials but there isn't anything there either.

Yes, I'm pretty sure about that.
First of all, why would Magix disable the profile function in the trial, instead of any other limitation. It doesn't make sense.
But here's real proof in 2 screenshots from Dutch reviews:
http://www.pcmweb.nl/software_review.jsp?productid=2665
http://www.techzine.nl/uploaded/7801_19a26fc4.jpg
Note the button on the top toolbar on the right. Xara Xtreme has the profile button for feathering in that spot. On the screenshots, it's missing. Neither of the screenshots have 'Trial' in the title bar.
This is the page about Magix Xtreme at the Xara website:
http://www.xara.com/products/xtreme/magixxtreme.asp
The Dutch text is 'The features of MAGIX Xtreme Photo & Graphic Designer are the same as in Xara Xtreme 3.2'. According to the German text, the features are 'comparable'.
I think Xara and Magix should be very clear about the differences. The profile function makes a big difference in my opinion.

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
FYI: Xara's history briefly:
(CorelXaras (1995), XaraX (January 2001) excluded)
Xara X1 (version 1.0, August 2004)
Xara Xtreme (version 2.0, December 2005)
Xara Xtreme Pro (version 3.0, December 2006)
---------------------------------------------
Magix Xtreme (version 3.1, early 2007)--released only because of Xara's acquisition by Magix.
Xara Xtreme/Pro 3.2 (version 3.2, June 2007)--released so Xara owners could have latest minor improvements available in Magix version + a few more.
-------my forecast--------
Xara (pro version) (presumably version 4+) (guessing mid-late 2008?--it's been a while now, must be good)
Charles has said that the Pro versions from now on will carry the Xara name, and non-pro versions the Magix name.
The point relevant to this thread is that Magix Xtreme was version 3.1, i.e. just prior to 3.2 by a few months. I think there was very little difference--only a few useability changes, such as the new drag-dropping rules and colour bar changes etc.

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
I bought Magix Xtreme as a Christmas present for a friend who doesn't speak English.
I believe it has the advantage of being in national languages so it can attract more users; the features are more or less just like 3.2 (not Pro), there are line profiles, pdf exports, clipart, etc.
There is also a basic printed manual and a more detailed one in pdf form, with movies (in italian).
You even get all the additional Magix stuff.
The boxed version sells for less than 70 euros.
So it is a good buy for non-professional ( and international) users.

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
This is all interesting information but that is all that it is (to me). As I have XXPro, I have no need for the Magix version other than as a possible gift to others.
Thanks for all the contributions.

I agree with your point about localized versions. I think this could be a great opportunity for less specialized users to get to know Xara's excellence.
I only hope they'll include the full Xara Xtreme 3.2 program in the next release of the Magix product.
Can you confirm some of the limitations of Magix Xtreme compared to Xara Xtreme 3.2 that were mentioned in this thread, or didn't you study it that closely?

The feather tool is included in Magix Xtreme, it may just be not visible in the default view. If you go to Windows > Control Bars and turn off 'Use large buttons' for Top you should then see the feather tool.

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
... and one way to check what is included and what is not, is to look at the buttons palette...

Magix Xtreme Graphic Designer 2
Magix Xtreme Graphic Designer 2:
This new version of the Xara clone seems to have the same features as Xara 4, however on my PC it is wayyyyy slower and actually is causing some system instabilities.

Re: Magix Xtreme limitations?
I saw a few unofficial localizations (Russian), but it always a bad solution due to special terms which are hard to translate in short. Also I always use all programs (AI, PSP, CD etc) with interface in English because of that issues. And actually, you just need to learn about 200 words to work with any programs. Maybe it's a good idea to have localizations, but not for Russian for sure )
