Problem with slicing tutorial
Hi there,
I tried to follow the slicing tutorial that you can find here.
I imported the .gif with the car, created the rectangles and made them semitransparent. Then the tutorial says that I should name the several slices (=rectangles).
Therefore I selected one of the rectangels with the Selector tool (arrow) but the icon to name slices (on the far right end of the Selector tool infobar) is not selectable (it is shown in light grey).
What have I done wrong? Thanks in advance!

Hello talpa, welcome to the forums.
I've made a video you can download HERE to watch the tutorial.
It is 4MB avi format file.

Availor.

Hello Availor,
Thanks for the quick reply! I watched your video and I really like your way of e-learning! Now I know what to do. The tutorial that I mentioned in my first post seems to be very brief.

Thanks :)
You didn't post where you are from, so regards to whenever you are :)
Re: Problem with slicing tutorial
I'm living in Frankfurt am Main (Germany).
The extension "am Main" describes that "my" Frankfurt is located at the river called "Main" because there is a second Frankfurt in the east of Germany next to the border of Poland.

Re: Problem with slicing tutorial
Hi Eric & John!
Thanks a lot for being welcome! Hope that my spelling is correct? :D
Sorry that I reply so lately, I forgot to subscribe my own thread so that I did not receive a mail when somebody replies. I'm going to change that now!
Last Friday I was out with a colleague from my company who is from Michigan. Here at Frankfurt there was "Night of the clubs". For 11,- Euro you can enter a lot of different clubs all over Frankfurt. While speaking english a lot of people came other and talked to us. They came from everythere in the states. That was a really funny evening.
Here in my thread I just came along again because I still have the same problem. I'm preparing a picture to explain it and will be back in five minutes.
Regards, talpa

Re: Problem with slicing tutorial
All right, I attached the picture. Here is my problem...
A brief overview of what I have done (according to the video of Availor):
- I created a rectangle and put it on top of my picture.
- With the Freehand Tool I drew two lines that divide my rectangle into three parts.
- I selected the rectangle and one of the lines together and choosed "Slice (cut) Shapes" from the Arrange Menu.
- I did the same with the remaining rectangle and the second line.
- On my attached picture you can see, that I dragged the rectangle-pieces apart like in Availors video.
- After that I selcted one piece of the rectangle in order to name the slice.
- Unfortunately the button to name slices is not available (shown in light grey, marked with the red circle).
What have I done wrong?
Regards, talpa

Nice tutorial, Availor. Thank you for sharing it.

Re: Problem with slicing tutorial
From the looks of your screenshot, you're running the Linux version of Xara. The Name gallery, and thus the ability to name objects, has not yet been implemented in that version of the software.
So you're not doing anything wrong, the software just isn't fully ported yet.
Re: Problem with slicing tutorial
Hi Odat,
that's what I worried about. :(
My first idea was, that I made something wrong. So I did not poste my question in the linux specific forum. I guess I'm going to post the question, if anybody knows when this feature will be available on Linux, overthere.
Thanks to all of you for the quick help!
Regards, talpa
Re: Problem with slicing tutorial

I tried to watch this video, but Quicktime says I am missing a component and sends me to a page with many plugins on it. Any idea which plugin I would need?
Re: Problem with slicing tutorial
It's a simple avi file you can open it with default windows media player or any other program like winamp.

Hello talpa,
i just did run into the same trouble some weeks ago :)
Don't worry, sometimes it's easier to slice the Image with Gimp anyway.
Gimp can also create html with PySlice, but i wouldn't recommend it because it use Tables for Layout.

Re: Problem with slicing tutorial
You don't need to use Gimp to slice a Xara Xtreme drawing, because you're able to export each object into a single file within Xara Xtreme:
- Select your object(s) and type "CTRL+E" to export only the selected object(s) and not the page as a whole.
- If there are some overlapped objects or only a small part of your drawing, you need to export in a single image, the following tip works:
- Create a new layer called "export".
- Draw a new rectangle over the part of your drawing, you want to export in a single file.
- Make this rectangle invisible ('no color' fill and 'no color' line).
- Export the rectangle in a PNG/JPG/GIF file.
- Repeat these steps for each separate part/section of your drawing.
- The result is one (or more) extract(s) from your drawing, saved in one (or more) PNG/JPG/GIF file(s). You can insert these file(s) into your web page.
Together with these steps you're able to create great webdesigns.

The same with Xara Xtreme's slice function (Menu "File->Export images in slice..."): This function creates a old fashioned HTML table layout. :(

Re: Problem with slicing tutorial
Thank you, the tutorial reminded me that I have to select everything in order to export slices.
I have seen several people mention that they can export one slice, I have not found how to do that, I always end up with a white rectangle!?
I am used to Fireworks, where the slicing is much more intuitive.

Re: Problem with slicing tutorial
Hi Alex,
This thread is 3 years old.
A lot of things can change in such a time.
The Xara tutorial remains available here
