Vase
IN PROGRESS
it has taken tons of time and tedius work to get this shape just how I wanted it. using the selector-info bar {x / y} {w / H } and various 'combine shapes'. is there a simpler way to accomplish the same thing?
and as you can see--in combining the 2 shapes it has left a line that remains part of the outline (that goes away when no line color is selected) can anyone help me in how do I remove that part of the outline.....end result: all one fill color and an outline that does NOT include the obvious unwanted line? thanks

Re: Vase
Hi Nance
I just downloaded your vase jpg, took my shape editor tool and just redrew it. Took only a minute and got the result you may be looking for. Mind you, since I am seriously lacking talent and imagaination, I cheat.....I use plugins and anything else so your probably best off to ignore me!

Re: Vase
The way I do that is to leave the original with the lines, do a control K (clone shape or line) and then click none on line width. It leaves a perfect replica of the shape sans the lines. Make sure you group the shapes first.
You can see the clone of the shape on the right with no lines. Or you can simply make the line color the same as the fill color. Doing it the last way preserves the original dimensions of your art.

Re: Vase
Nance,
If you draw a circle and a line and group them, then drag the circle toward the line, you can get correct perspective.

Re: Vase
Rich thanks for the perspective tip
James...how simple--same fill color with line color. ultimately that is how it will end up. it will include perspective, gradient, and transparency. the present render tho threw me........ a black clone with 0 line width--thanks, I think I'll experiment with that
Seagull, a good idea too. I do really appreciate your comment on 'cheating'. doing art without a computer first I TRULY felt that digital art was just plain cheating:)
thanks guys

Re: Vase
vase IN PROGRESS
james, I tried both your ideas but unsucessfully. the only way I could see to make the line width at 0 was a 'button' on the selector toolbar that looked like -\ with the - as an arrow. and every clone attempt created the outline. wouldn't be surprized if I was doing sumthing wrong:confused:
Seagull, I tried your idea and the below is the result. it did take additional time and additional tedius work BUT I did accomplish what I wanted.
now--it appears on the left side of the vase there is some remnant of a line?? for the sake of learning anybody know how I can get rid of that? thanks
nance
ps: oh, I see it's also partially on the right side as well

Re: Vase
Here's how you use the Color Editor for a fill of a line or a shape with color.
There are a couple of other ways to do this as well.
Another way I talked about previously was to set the line to none after you clone your shape. Example is in the second image.
-
Re: Vase
OK. I'm fairly familiar with the color editor. but pointing out the line width and the 0 option on the scrolldown-- know about that too, but have rarely used it b4 (the 0 line width). of course using it in that manner per your instructions didn't occur to me:o .....:p
have discovered that the 'off' color in the outline might be related to setting the page color orange. be interesting to see how it goes without that
thankyou

Re: Vase
my effort, just drew a wide line round image and filled with appropriate colour
the apparent line on the right may be an optical illusion caused by the orange colour.

Re: Vase
I think this proves what you thought nance its the orange colour causing the illusion. Sorry about the change of shape in the first effort.

Re: Vase
Morning Nance
I was a bit dumb last night. I answered without really thinking. This morning, when I draw an elipse and then a rectangle, slightly overlap the two and when selecting both and adding, there is no black line between them, they become one shape, which I knew but didn't think. Maybe if you post the steps you took....actaully I'm being sneaky, I am curious about what you did but I also want to see how you created your elipse.
P.S. try not to look up at this bird.....I am starting a way of showing my emotions called the splat system......don't ask but always be nice to me.
-
Re: Vase
thanks Norm. my experiment with that showed the present blue outline against an orange page background darkened only parts of the outline, and that just doesn't seem right:confused: --while it does sorda explain it. if I remember correctly all other colors I changed it to had no problem
Seagull, I tried many times combining shapes--adding shapes b4 the first vase post. never got rid of the line. don't know if I needed to overlap them more:confused: --I was using a very small sized overlap, but it would again seem that that wouldn't matter
regarding the 'ellipse' and steps used to present shape. firstly I did not start with a seperate shape such an ellipse and or rectangle. started with a freehand draw. used the shape editor on that. at some point it seemed cutting into seperate shapes would make the editing easier. you wanted to know how I got that shape...many hours of detailed work. so as you can see the shape is not perfectly aligned, as Rich saw and probablly threw in the perspective tip. from an artisic point of view I take the viewpoint that nothing is truly perfect. but with a vase you have to get it very close at least, I think

Re: Vase
With regard to the dark line around your vase where there shouldn't be one. Try turning the antialias down a noch and see if that removes or reduces the phantom line.

Re: Vase
thanks masque, will give it a try

Re: Vase
I used the help index to look up how to change dithering. I tried changing from error-difusion, ordered, & none. I also tried changing the quality setting--got below 50% with no change. unless you have another means of changing the dithering these were both unsuccessful. I also must correct myself...the 'phantom' outline does occur for other lighter colors. fortunately dark colors which is the intended color for this vase as of yet show no 'phantom' outlines (have not yet put in any background color). so this remains a bit of a mystery

Re: Vase
this thot occurred to me while I was resting. I redrew the vase shape per Seagull's idea of how to get rid of the unwanted line in the outline. in redrawing it could there have been some portion of the original outline that remained underneath (??)
this vase will nolonger be of the color posted here. as others have done feel free to download these light blue shapes and do whatever you want with them including posting your own attemps if you like to solve mysterys

Re: Vase
OK, I'm having problems. this is the first time I've tried using Xtreme gradient fills. I want to use more than one seperate fill, but I can't find how to do that....how is this possible?
and when I try using the gradient fill with double-clicking a new 'handle' and color dropper-- the whole vase object goes white. quite frustrated:(
any ideas for help?

Hi Nance
Look at the attached xar file. Perhaps this might explain a few techniques.

Re: Vase
thanks egg, I check it out!

Re: Vase
Sorry Egg.....your not getting off that easy.
First your put everything in layers and when I try to select, nothing. Took a minute or two before I realized you had had made each layer uneditable probably trying to catch a lot of people and completely fustrate them. This was sneaky, underhanded, uncalled for and again way too large for my screen resolution and I love it.....You just went up another 2 points in my book, all except for the screen resolution. That's hitting below the belt cause it affects me.
However my guru....vase #1 has me puzzeled. Remove the high light and select just the vase and we have a blue vase with a two tone finish. When I select the fill tool it says many.......???????.......okay. that says a lot about nothing. Oh oh...for some reason I right clicked on it and bingo, I am offered the blend tool and......damn.....I started writting this too soon. I just removed your blend and I see what you have done. You sir are one sneaky rascal. You are the ultimate guru and I the humble grasshopper. Go find Parahandy and ask for another one of those unpalatable Guinness that he's brewing in his old wooden barrel. Mind you, it's not as good as a thread as this one, everyone over there is into alcohol of one sort or another.

Re: Vase
Seagull, while you are amusing, you sound like you have bubble-gum in your feathers:p :) :)
now, Egg, I just glanced at what you had me download. Seagull might be all in a tuft, but I thankyou very, very, VERY much for what I downloaded. I won't be as quick as Seagull in getting it, but it certainly provides other ways of experimenting (and probably easier methods than what I've been trying). I assume these are methods you have learned and used yourself (?)

Re: Vase
Oh, you're good this morning Nance...a tuft, feathers....great play on words. And you know seagulls, anything on the ground is fair game so I very well may have gum in the old feathers.
What happened yesterday was that both Xara and the forum were open and I was playing with the vases in xara at the same time I was writting. Actually, I opened the vases in the morning, left them while working in the yard, played with them a bit at lunch, started working again, got a call which egg can relate to, not a nice one at all I will mention, a rescue that ended up as a recovery) got home and started playing with the vases again to unwind and ended up writting a few seconds before I started to see the light. I realized at the time that the best solution was just to delete the post but I decided to post anyway so others could follow the illogical logic I was using and get the same results in a more efficient manner.
Don't you love what egg did with the blend tool? I have used it occassionly to make 3d, but always going from front to back, played morfing stars to circles and here is egg using it to blend colours in the front of an image to create 3d. That's why I'm here, waiting for the leaders to open the doors to new ideas while us flunkys get to drag the heavy boxes through the door. The tutorials in the xone are absolutly great but they are all written by Gary who thinks as Gary, while Egg thinks like Egg and the Twiddler thinks like the Twiddler. You all take different approaches, see beauty in different places and I am open to you all your ideas.....bet you egg wouldn't have thought of "tuft"....your up there with the best of them Nance...no splat award for you this morning.
-
Re: Vase
Seagull, you are a very noisey seagull. it's a challenge for me to follow what you say:) :D :) nevertheless, I did profit from your l o n g chirade in post #20
Egg your examples are really helpful and, well REALLY helpful. I was even able to take them apart:eek:(surprise face) thankyou one more time
by the way--others have made this mistake--my uzer name is TWIDDER not twiddLer. it was intended as a take on 'tweetybird'--twidderbird. but I'm thinking I should've chosen sumthung else
and I certainly DON'T feel comfortable to be put in the same category as Egg and Gary. this is the first time I'm attempting Xtreme gradients, blends, and transparancies...so as you can see senior member only means I reached a certain # of posts (I think?)--not that I know what I'm doing;)
nance
oh --thanks for the 'no splat zone' tho-- appreciate that

Re: Vase
Hey, I just discovered something here. Egg included instructions with the download. Unfortunatly I only just now found them when I zoomed out for an overall picture. It's the silly screen resolution thing again. I am trying to create the first of the two vases and for some reason my blend is not working like egg's. Will keep on trying

Re: Vase
Seagull
Blends can give strange effects. The main one being caused by having more or less nodes in 1 shape than the other.
So the first thing to do is to create a blend between shapes with an equal number of nodes.
Secondly, Xara doesn't know which nodes to blend to each other. However it does show you, showing a line between the outer shape and the inner shape, indicating what outer node is linked to what inner node.
You can reset this using the Blend tool, by just dragging from any outer node to a matching node on the inner shape.
I attach a xar file hopefully explaining this a bit better. (in full 800 x 600 pixel screen size). ;)
-
Re: Vase
First thing I did was to zoom out just to make sure you weren't hiding any instructions outside of my vision field, just so I wouldn't embarrass myself a second time. Then I started playing, very roughly of course since this is my nature, and found out that one important feature in doing this is to remove the outline. I do believe that the strange results in the first effort was caused by not having the same amount of nodes, since both the shapes were drawn seperatly. I was thinking the fault might have been because I converted both shapes to editable shapes to manipulate them, but maybe not. I have been playing with this all day between gardening and another call today. Two rescue / recovery jobs in two days, three in three weeks, emphasis on recovery on all three....this is not supposed to happen to volunteer firemen. This is where xara comes in great, I just open it and play, sometimes not even looking at what I'm doing, just unwinding. Now, I can blend as I unwind thanks to you, or draw bubbles, little mindless pursuits that get deleted when I am ready to leave the computer. And one of these days I hope to create your drinking glass, and if I do I guarantee I will post it making sure you get all the credit. Good night now and thanks for all the help.

START TO FINISH
Practiced last night before going to bed, then opened the computer this morning and did this in about 5 minutes, give or take one. 5 minutes qualifies as a doodle. Thanks for the help egg and thank you for the new idea nance.......was starting to get tired of bubbles I was. Oh, and getting back to the original thread, notice nance.....no black line...heh heh heh (that's a smug snicker in case you missed it cause I'm feeling good this morning)
-
Re: Vase
Glad to have helped Frank.
Remember you can always select either shape in a blend (best go to wireframe then Ctrl+Click to select either shape). Now you can drag the whole shape around or more usefully, with the shape editor tool drag individual nodes around and XaraX does lie onscreen updates!

Re: Vase
I really like your effect Bob. It's not a tool, at least I don't think it is, but it has a really stunning affect on me, almost hypnotic. Seems I'm the first ot download the file. I may have to ask you to slow down since my poor old hard drive is start to fill up with all these xara files I'm downloading. They are all filed waiting for a rainy day to play with, once the accounting has been brought up to date, stupid stuff gets the priority on rainy days

Re: Vase
really cool blend there, Drifter:cool:
Seagull, on your yellow vase from 2 seperate shapes #27--that is not from my original light blu vase that you got no dark outline--correct? or if it is from the original I'd like to know
well I'm glad you guys are having a good time and learning, but I'm still stuck. I'm getting better on the gradient fill which was my original frustration.....but I have to ask Egg about this blend tool and your vase2.xar file how did you get that great blend of 50 steps 'cut' and fitting perfectly inside the vase? And am I understanding correctly that you can shape-edit a blend with the shape editor tool?
going very slowly

Bob like the light/flame in your picture very illuminating don't you think.

NORM!!! (hahahahaha) I'm telling you - write and illustrate a children's book!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Vase
certainly a nice idea Norm. diddo on Bob-- illustrate children's books!
once I get this vase exactly how I want it I plan then to do a series with it as I did with Apples (non-xara gallery). I'm being very particular with it cuz this vase sits up on the bar-counter right in my view (as well as a bunch of other vases) while I work on the computer.
