Spiders
I have always found spiders to be interesting and amazing creatures. They are somehow both ugly and beautiful at the same time, and provide great reference for sci-fi artwork.
I took this picture in my garden this afternoon. This specimen is a bit larger than our normal, being almost an inch in length, from face to spinner.
What kind of spiders are in your house or garden? - Andrew

Re: Spiders
Ballpoint,
The spider I photographed and Mike drew was a common garden spider ... also known as "Argiope aurantia". The spider Rich photographed may also be a type of "argiope".
Anton,
I hope that is a super closeup shot of a jumping spider. Otherwise, you have a BIG problem :D

Re: Spiders
It was quite a decent-sized spider. It was taken with flash (looking at the depth of illumination of that one eye, the spider must have been thinking the two-neuron equivalent of "wtf was that??"), and my wee digital compact can't do flash in macro mode, and anyway I didn't want to get that close in case it could jump...
It's actually looks quite cuddly, don't you think?

Re: Spiders
I took this one through our living room window the other day. This little fella has been living here for a while now and I noticed him rebuilding his web (I assume the one from the previous day got wrecked by the wind and rain) so took some pics of it. Absolutely fascinating to watch.....

Re: Spiders
I am no expert on spideys by any means, but I think that is a female. I heard once that only the females have spinerettes... Anybody out the know more about spideys? :o :)

Re: Spiders
Cool picture Andrew!
Nice fall colors and dew on the web... A regular fall day. Had a nice big ole black spidey in the house last night. This gal must have been 2-3 inches across. I just squished her with a hammer... Take no chances with big ole spideys... :)

Now put a little lady in the web instead of the spidey and you will have a contest winner... :)

Now this one was really big! Unfortunately there isn't anything in the photo for size reference. It resembled a small crab rather than a spider!

Re: Spiders
Very cool Rich,
did you try one with a flash? :)

Re: Spiders
This was in manual focus and manual exposure. I didn't think about using a flash. Rich

It was dark when I returned, and I couldn't see the web to manual focus. The spider had returned for a meal, and I was able to autofocus on it. Never saw any web, just the spider. Rich

I just discovered this thread today, and it just happens to be one of my favourite photographic subjects. I only really go picture-taking when I'm on vacation. Here are a couple of pictures of spiders in southern California (one of my main vacation destinations).
