These are of the "catlaya" seed line. My wife
has a tremendous variety of orchids. These are in bloom right now. So, I borrowed a plant and sat down and began drawing & painting in Xara X.
The very wonderful> line, color, transp, feather tools were used.
Enjoy..

You have a splendid feel for the beauty of flowers. I am inspired to try some more, myself.

Publish a book or some postcards or something! Just publish! All your flowers are a joy to see. Add the words "Puerto Rico" to the bottom and these orchids would make a great tourist postcard.

This is one of the most wonderful images I have seen on this board. The colour is so terrific too! Absolutely beautiful!

Very beautiful, very appealing! One of the reasons I like Xara is its ability to display strong vibrant colors (when, of course, its in the hands of someone with your talents) .... its perfect for flowers.
I'd really like to see the process from beginning to end of drawing such a flower recorded into a AVI movie similar to the what Xara uses for its demos. I think it would be facinating!

You da man, Bill.

Bill, a wonderful illustration. Your wife grows 'em and you painit 'em. Sounds like a winning combination. Vibrant and magical. Neil

... that is absolutely beautiful.
You really know your flowers!

A truely fantastic image. I particularly like the background composition.

But I don't think the transparency that covers the orchid on the left does anything for the drawing. I'd make it like the one on the right. There's just something off-putting about that for me.

Bill,
You are so prolific. Thanks for sharing your works.

And checking forum for some beautiful things... ...very refreshing. Thumbs up.

I have tried drawing flowers on a number of occasions and I can't get close. Without wishing to sound immodest, I consider myself to have good drawing skills, if not with Xara yet, at least with more traditional drawing tools. Your drawing seems to have a great empathy with the subject. You are obviously a lover of, or at least surrounded by, flowers. That weightless, translucency is remarkable.

...awesome and beautiful. A masterpiece. Just imagine to have it digitally printed in poster format with a glossy surface. It'll be a smashing hit for all poster companies around the globe. Or orchid growers, traders, importers...

..to share feelings that one can express in (painting) Xara. The creative spirit pushes one forward...Xara is so challanging.

I love it. I think flowers have to be drawn or painted from the real thing instead of a photo to catch their delicate and often translucent qualities. Not an easy task as they move with the light.

..I'm answering your post because you made a suggestion about a transparency on the left.
I couldn't decifer what exactly you had in mind..but I wanted to use your suggestion. Anyway, I did some re-doing..check out the new one. I deleted the first one and upload the reworked one.
See if you see where I used your suggestion or not. Thanks again!

I see the change Bill - And it is truly amazing how much more depth was generated with the change.
I've learned from your image tips on building depth into images through use of transparent compositional elements like your vertical strips and light rays. Thanks!

You've done what I had in mind, and - for me, anyway - the image looks right, now. It's really gorgeous, Bill

.....missed the first version but this is absolutely stunning - the brilliant colours combined with such a delicate touch is totally awe-inspiring. Thanx....Penny

Bill,
I think the change has improved the illustration - making the beautiful, more beautiful. It is possible to orchid more beautiful. I wouldn't have believed it. Good Work. Neil
