Thanks to all your support over the past few years I am now frustrated with the logo I use for my own business.
I would greatly appreciate your comments on the attached. Version A is the current one. There is no real visual tie between the logo and the company, it excludes the option of sub-brands as in B2, it does not describe the business (other than owl-wise-wisdom which was the original idea). And my business coach urges a yellow/gold/orange colour as it is associated with respect etc.
Thanks

The owl does not seem to know where to perch.
Is there some way you can integrate the owl with the D in Design. That is, have the owl perching on the D and become part of the design.
I like the simplified version of the owl better.
My other suggestion is to look at placing the owl between the two words e.g. TLA |owl|Design.
The owl needs to be achored to something. At present he is too flighty http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I agree wuith Gary - could the view of the owl be changed?
How about viewing the owl face on with its wings open, as if in mid-flight? Then the wingspan could become an "underline" or a "hat" (are there proper words for this?) for the text. Perhaps the owl's head could even poke up through the middle of the two words, like GP suggetsed.
I think the whole owl image is best served as a bird, rather than an icon - flight suggests elevation, elation, success - the owl, obviously, and as you said, wisdom. But I feel that an owl sitting there like that can look a little contrived (no offence meant by this) - and I would associate that image with something a little more studious, but not in a good way.
Or...
I thought the owl could perch on top of the T - maybe give it some talons with which to grip onto its seat?
Hope I haven't spoken out of place.

I'll work on your ideas today.
"Hope I haven't spoken out of place." - certainly not; that's why I post here. I work on my own and having a source of frank and helpful comments and advice is invaluable.

Simon, have you tried putting the owl behind the D with it's head hanging over the front?
Mickie

I prefer the owl in C and D - what if the owl came at the beginning of the logo, and seemd to me the momentum behinf the italicised font?
Just a thought...

Here's my rough suggestion for your logo...
I personally try to steer clear of "exotic" typefaces when designing corporate stuff and I often find that simple black text plus a single colour ends up giving the maximum impact.
I have (very) quickly stylized your owl to make it more "designerish", but it could use a bit more work.
Anyhow, if nothing else, it may give you some more ideas. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
-- stratocast
-
I wil ltry moving the owl to the start; it would make sense with the italic font - pushing it.
And I like stratocast's ideas. I will stick with the red but have another look at fonts. The simplified owl looks good too.
Sometimes I wish XaraX was slow - it would force one to play with a smaller number of options!

I'd recommend to stick with one single type face.
Though I'm not good at drawing organic objects, I tried my best with a clip art to demonstrate what I mean.

I find it interesting to see how other people develop ideas - I know that I go through loads of phases before falling on a final design.
You could try using Verdana - crass I know, but it's an effective font - easy on the eye, everybody has it on their machines (so making websites etc. have an all-over corporate look would be easy)... use the old BoldUnbold thing, perhaps?
The owl looks great perched there on the A - looks like it's about to take off with it! Nice one.

It is sad, but I didn't like any version. Very very bad(disgusting fonts and owls)...but unfortunately I cannot create anything too... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

I love the black and red from Jens; this looks really classy.
I have based the owl on clipart and tracings of other images; perhaps I need to push the envelope.
I like the Serifa font; I used simple Courier in my last set. Something more compact would be good. As I want to be able to use a longer word (Consultancy), it would help if it is tight.
I'll try some single font variations, and light on dark too.
I'll make Xander happy one day!
Thanks again...

defined by the outline of the wing in the newer owl found in Option C, above.
Perhaps you could exploit that.

These are all single font, and showing the TLA and TL Consultancy uses for some. I think I could live with all of these.
I need to create a feeling in the TLA client of trust, 'get on and do', etc; that is my brief to myself.

Alex, great logos there.
For what's its worth, I personally think this is the route you should be taking Simon. I really, really don't want to offend but the logos you have come up with to date, in my opinion, just do not do you justice and are a bit weak. Sorry!

In these, I have (mostly) taken Alexander's view that I should scrap the poor owl.
I have played with TLA in lower case, bending the fonts and breaking them up into lines.
I will be interested to see if people think these are stronger; I will then have to add something in because they no longer say anything about the business!
It is so much easier when a client says "You have till Monday and I want the owl in" - even if you think it's horrible!
Thanks again... Hopefully all these iterations will be useful to someone!

you are not IBM, so forget just TLA. What does it mean? TransLucentAtlantic? Tough Love Ahead? Tossed Lots Around?
See what I mean? Your biz name should at least incluce your program, or better saying: your program or service or USP should reach the client in an instant through the biz name.
So at least you should have the word 'design' somewhere. Or 'consulting'. And your NAME, so that everybody knows who's behind the scene.
Maybe the basics in marketing are less important in today's world, but the past years showed how many companies and wanna-be-companies went down the gutter. I've grown up with TBWA (the acronym for an ad agency), and DMM and IBM, but not with TLA. TWA on the other hand does have a meaning to me, because I flew with them several times.
JGRB wouldn't say anything to you, but I guess Jens would say more. It's a face you remember, messages, tips and tricks, opinions.
You are an individual, so be proud of it, show pride in your capabilities and experience and forget the three meaningless letters.
Just my two cents...
I just imagine receiving a call Monday morning: this is TLA, I would like to talk to Mr. Benthien please... I'd say: who of who from where? But if the voice would say: This is Simon T. Lewis, I would like to talk to Mr. Benthien please, I'd **know** in a fraction of a second who you are and where you are from.
Simon T. Lewis is **someting**, but TLA is nothing. Toast Leverage Association. Total Lost Acronym. Tough Loser Asset.
Hm, don't take my playing with words personally, I just want to make the problem tangible for you.

This makes sense. 'TLA' also means 'three letter abbreviation' which to people in a consultancy world of endless such made a slight joke.

Scrapped 'TLA'; in full instead. The owl is in but more stylised. The fonts may still be disliked... Are these 'stronger'?

I did this fairly quickly - so there are a lot of possibilities. If you want the Xara File - let me know.

sorry, this doesn't mean to be an offense, but the # 1 and # 3 look more like a new brand for jeans. A logo for a designer or consultant should be more classic and straightforward, that means avoid the type faces you've used. American Typewriter looks good in fashion, but not in design...
Otherwise your logo developments are well executed!

I must really settle now! The attached is my shortlist; I am really grateful for everyones comments - it has been interesting to see the debate.
Some broad principles of logo design that I have collected... Please disagree or add to them!
1. Don't use just initials; but you can if you include a business description eg 'TLA Consultancy'.
2. Ideally use a single font; you can use mixes of normal, bold, italic, size, colour etc
3. If you want two fonts, make them strongly contrasting
4. On colour, remember the printing implications; one colour is cheapest, full colour costs the most (and loses impact)
5. On size; remember that the logo may be used very small or at low resolution so keep the design simple and bold
6. Integration; try to link the elements of the design. Wrap the words round a graphic, place them on top, inside, or stretch parts of the text to link them...
7. Graphics should have positive associations, convey a good mood etc
8. Avoid obvious use of clipart
9. Some people hate graphic elements, but they can contribute to uniqueness
10. Beware of clutter, of over-filling the space; leave air in the logo
11. Rather than doing endless close variations of one or two basic designs, aim for 6-8 totally different ideas; then try evolving the best one or two.

Sorry to butt in at what is probably the final hour, but do you have to use those colours? And is the Owl really necessary?
Can I have a go?
Sean
-
Of course you can have a go!
The owl is not necessary. The colours are dark red (because it always has been) and a yellow because my business coach recommends either blue and yellow or burgundy and yellow as they portray reliability, trust etc. So it ought to include some kind of yellow.

Ok,
here are some rough layout suggestions:
http://flyservers.registerfly.com/me...rel/index.html
Note that as i'm dumb as can be i missed there are 2 "l" in "tyrrell" - but then again look at it as a watermark http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
If you like a design, let me know and i will do a workover with the second "l" included http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Of course anything like colors, elements etc. can be replaced, combined or added as you wish.
Thanks,
Frank
P.S. As i'm doing this for a living, i'd rather prefer me finishing the logo (with your instructions in mind of course) so i can include it in my portfolio and keep the copyright/credits - all just in case you like my ideas at all anyway. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Here's a few variations on a simple idea. The wavy line mimics that style of brackett to emphasize the 'association' of T and L
http://seanf.bei.t-online.de/tlasheet.gif
Couldn't squeeze an owl in I'm afraid.
Sean

Frank:
I like these, but I can't have 'design' as a dominant element; I do some consultancy, some web design/graphics, and anything else someone will pay me for!
Thanks for your ideas. I need to finish my own design for the same reasons, but promise I won't run close to your ideas - to preserve your copyright.
Sean
Yes, these are nice and simple, but they don't grab me, I'm afraid. Thanks for your efforts too...

What a lot of variations!
I like the punch with the DESIGN element but as I said, I need the flexibility...
But no more prevaricating... SO the winner is Set 8/D
This has a single font, a discrete owl, doesn't trap me into 'Design', and gives me a motif and texture to use on the website. (The grid effect was simply done with Arrange/Slice.)
THANKS to all for your ideas. Hopefully you have got new samples to float at your own clients.
