Just thought I'd start this out.
1) PLEASE give us a little more control over the Glow/Shadow Tool. A slider and/or type box would make this area of the tool MUCH improved!!
When dragging the glow outwards I don't see any way to control it to exact points (as you have control over the blur and transparency) so sometimes on a complex object pulling a glow outwards (or inwards) can be time consuming for it to draw itself and most of the time it's either too large or too small!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif If a slider and/or type box were provided this area would be just about perfect!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
2) A Mesh Tool would really come in handy for when you want to create a fill that "flows" with curved areas that are not exactly perfect ovals or rectangles (including circles and square shapes).
3) and one that will get a whole new slew of mixed reviews but it's my wish so there!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif A built in Spell Checker!
Thanks! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

While we are on the shadow tool, I would like to be able to bring the shadow to the front of the object, not just behind. (i.e. 3D light source for my 2D object)
Another thing that would be nice is to have the NavBar tool update on the fly. When I enter a number of pixels space between buttons, and I don't get it right, I have to undo, and re-create the navbar until I get it right. This is a crummy trial and error way to do things when I have come to expect instant updates from Xara.
I'm sure I'll think of other things later.
Cheers,
Eric

Would it not be great if there was a feature request database; this would mean we had a single place for recording them, there could be a voting system, and Xara could make comments.
I know we could carry on using threads, but I have seen people v frustrated at having to say "I requested this back in 1875..."
I would offer to build and host it but it would be better to be part of TG as the same logon can be used.
-
1) Improved "Paste Attributes" when used with shadows, bevels etc. The current behaviour is a bit idiosyncratic...
2) Some sort of "stylesheet" system for attributes (including the above).
3) I quite like the "double-click on a group to edit" feature in Certain Other Products.
4) Maybe a bit more control over text flow - e.g. tabs and indents, separate line & para spacing. I know there's no point writing a wordprocessor, but it would be nice to (e.g.) do a hanging indent.
5. OK - flamebait! Dump the MDI window and have free-floating document windows and palettes (*cough* Artworks *cough*). I like to use 2 monitors whenever possible, which is fine if you've (e.g.) got Xara on one and Photoshop on t'other, but working on 2 docs in the same app is a pain with MDI.
-
A couple of small changes to the text handling in XaraX would be nice:-
1. Automatic text underlining - we have bold and italic buttons so why not underlining?
2. direct entering of accented text instead of having to back space to delete excess accents - (PS I know this a topic covered at length in other parts of the forum - its just a problem that really drives me wild as a foreign language user of XaraX)

If you select your Default Unit to be Pixels, that selection should reflect everywhere, including line width.
As noted in this thread:

(Bug or feature: This does work for font size, but the actual contents of the drop down menu will still be in points...)

Very sensible opinion, I think.
Even Microsoft has seen the error in their ways and gotten rid of MDI in .NET (and even its Office applications), so hopefully Xara X2 will do just that as well.

Ummmm, Daniel, have you tried using the main work area NOT maximized?? You CAN then move your galleries over and out of the main work area very easily. So I imagine you could grab the corner of the main window and pull it to the size you need (just don't maximize it) and then drag your galleries over to the other monitor screen! See the screen shot below. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Now imagine this with two monitors, it would work!! Personally for myself I'm all for having the option to dock the galleries to the side of the work area. So I'm on the oposite side of the fence here. Dialogs are more organized and easier to get too, IMHO!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
The only thing I think should be updated for the Galleries is to make them all the same size as they are pulled larger and make them sticky so they snap to each other (this would include any tool bars that are undocked too!!).
I'd also like when certain objects are selected, belonging to certain layers, the layer would automatically be selected for you. I have an issue when I am working away and may have selected another layer to work in and forget to re-select the layer where I want the objects to live and so then I have to select all those objects and click the "move" button to get them where I need them. When you are involved with a HUGE project (like the Space Being) you have so many things you are working on at the same time it would just make the work flow a little smoother!

(1) Pasting to locked layers.
The fact that XaraX allows me to paste to a locked layer, drives me mad. As it stands now, when I make the 'mistake', I have to unlock the layer, delete the paste, re-lock the layer, highlight the layer I want the paste to go to and re-paste. This makes absolutely no sense to me. If you have a lot of layers on a complicated drawing, it's so easy to have the wrong layer highlighted. It should not matter which layer you happen to have highlighted at the time, locked is locked, right. A simple popup saying "This layer's locked, dummy!" would save a lot of extra steps and reduce the profanity factor. I would dearly like to see this changed.
(2) Pasting text.
I noticed today, that although I had the page/template set up for the Arial font, when I pasted some text from a text processor, I got ##!@&** Times New Roman. I thought I'd seen the last of that font.
-
This is all great stuff guys. It does get noticed and suggestions do get added to the ‘great wish list’ from which new features and priorities are picked.
Can I ask for more clarification on the suggested feature from Daniel; ‘double click on a group to edit’. What exactly would this do or edit? Do you mean ungroup or just ‘select the object inside the group’?
We’ve certainly considered the black arrow / white arrow approach selecting objects inside groups as implemented by a number of different applications. While this approach is more complex for new users, it does have some merits for advanced users I can see.
-
Rework The layers gallery to add nestable folders. Would make complex drawings oh so much simpler.
-
A huge ditto to stratocast's not letting me add objects to locked layers. I must have done that at least three times a day for the last ten years, and it was definitely a factor in the breakup of my marriage.

WOW!! Sorry to hear that John! All over XaraX?? Well she was not a patient gal, now was she!?! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

RAMWolff,
we had a design agency on a very 'select' and quiet business park, the volume and range of my profanities, when software misbehaved, did make me infamous in the local area, which truly was a factor... I'm not really blamimg Xara though, of course.

The shadow tool, I wish I could carry the attribute to another object, so it would carry the same shadow settings as the original one.
-
A Scale and a Rotate tool that would affect selected points or entire objects, with a movable point of origin. Please! Pretty please.... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
-
Dan,
I think you can already partially do this in Xara X1.
Select your objec, double click on it for rotate selection and then the point of origin is in the center. You can then move it out so that the object can be rotated AROUND it's point of origin instead of rotating it in it's CENTER of origin.
I'm not at all sure what you could be referring to with wanting to rotate a selected point (node ? )? http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Hi Stratocastn and others,
FYI You DON'T have to go through all the steps you listed when accidentally pasting to a locked layer.
Just press CTRL+Z (undo). I have gotten so used to how this works I like the way Xara allows you to paste to a locked layer.
-
Thanks, Richard. Duh, I know Xara already does the whole object, don't know why I included that http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif.
What I SHOULD have said was that I would like a tool that would work the exact same way on a group of points as well as the object. I hate to say it, but Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw have had it for some time and I find it to be a pretty handy tool.
-
> dump MDI
If you mean duplicating the workspace and the toolbars for each open document, Please Don't. That's a big waste of real estate for those of us who don't use multiple monitors. As Rammie said, you can drag your palettes and toolbars all over the place now if your workspace isn't maximized.
> Galleries ... make them all the same size as they are pulled larger and make them sticky so they snap to each other (this would include any tool bars that are undocked too!!)
Docking and similar behavior is fine so long as there's an option to turn it off for those of us who don't want it, or only want it sometimes.
> Pasting to locked layers
Yep, that's one I can happily do without. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
BTW, stratocast, re pasting text — if Xara doesn't paste text from a wordprocessor as ASCII or ANSI, thus automatically cleaning out the formatting codes, the source app may be the culprit. I don't paste (or import) text from any app into another except as plain text because surprises frequently lurk behind the scenes. Word is particularly bad about including junk.
>The shadow tool, I wish I could carry the attribute to another object...
Me too.
And more than anything, I want some things I've asked for multiple times before: Align to Selected Object (instead of Align to Extreme), and a true origin in the upper left corner rather than the lower left.
Here's another I voted for in 2001 that would be nice: Option to save rotation point position with object and copy/apply with other attributes.
-
Ref Richards comment - have you tried using the main work area NOT maximized?? You CAN then move your galleries over and out of the main work area very easily.
just a point - I have no problems moving galleries out of the main work area even with XaraX maximised on my main monitor. No need to minimise at all it works like a charm.
Also as an aside . I use a great dual monitor tool called Untramon which allows me to instantly flip the main XaraX window to my second monitor when wanted without losing placement of the 'floating' galleries
This app is a godsend as in my work Im usually copy images from Acrobat documents into XaraX for editing and then export to file to then import into Word. I find having Word on monitor 1 and Acrobat on monitor 2 with XaraX floating between the two and brought to the front as required is great.

Is there a way for you to illustrate what you are trying to say here? I am totally confused with this line!! Even post an example from Draw if need be?? Not sure how you would do this but maybe in tutorial form where you would point out the points and what they are supposed to do and why this would be addition to Xara X1.
Thanks much! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Hi John,
Yes, of course you're right, hitting CTRL+Z will do the trick and I won't bore you with an explanation of my idiosyncratic way of working. However, I feel that I should be able to lock a layer to protect it from accidental modification, and that means all and any modification. The way X1 works at the moment is totally counter intuitive to me and although I've been using the app since CorelXara 1.x, I suspect that, unlike you, I will never be able to get my head around it. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Seems there are lots of folks so far that want to be able to copy and paste attibutes other than the color and transparency of another objects.
CorelDraw 12 has this under the Eye Dropper Tool called Object Attributes. See the screen shot below................
This sort of functionality belongs in Xara X1 IMHO!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Hi Allison,
I was actually pasting plain text from a so called "notepad replacement" app. You make a good point though and I'll investigate further.

NoteTab, BAC? http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Lately, I've occasionally had text coming in with some sort of default font. I wonder if NoteTab is being "helpful" or XP?
'Course, you may be right that it's the old Xara default rearing its ugly head. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Layers Gallery: I'm all for the suggestion that clicking on an object highlights the object AND the layer it's on. (At present you just have to turn layers visibility on and off to see which layer it's on)
Secondly I'd like to be able to just 'run' the mouse down the layers to select/deselect them. At present you have to click on each box in turn to select/deselect them)
Flash is excellent in both these fields.

Dockable Galleries: NO, I hate them and roll ups!
-
Text: Re accentuated characters & Font searching. Just add the OPTION of Xara3D's Text options window.
-
SWF Export: Fix the missing faces problems in Xara3D (Off Topic I know but I'm sure it's still under development)
-
A True Vector Bevel: Would it be possible to duplicate Xara3D's bevel option so we can create vector bevels as well as bitmap bevels? Xara3D does this nicely, if in a limited manner via swf, but this is just great file size wise.

Stratocast:
Hi. Although the locked layer issue does not bother me a great deal (anymore). I totally agree with you that functionality should follow what the user would LOGICALLY ANTICIPATE. Put my Yes Vote down for doing as you suggest.
Egg:
I like the check-marks very much. I just wish a person could use standard windows Shift and Ctrl selection techniques in the check-mark columns.
"clicking on an object highlights the object AND the layer it's on". Doesn't the layer name appear in Xara's task bar for the selected object?
-
I'd like to see a much larger work area, Xara 3D text options and lighting. A gradient mesh tool and a .pdf export.
-
John
Maybe I didn't explain myself very clearly or maybe I assume too much familarity with Flash. In Flash to select a layers visible or editable shape, it's just a very simple matter of holding down the left mouse button and running down the list to turn the arrows on/off as opposed to XaraX's method of selecting each box individually and the ticking/unticking it.
On the 2nd point you're correct but it would be more intuitive if the layer of the selected object was highlighted in the layers gallery itself instead of just the task bar.
Re the locked layer state in XaraX, at least this warns you that it can't be done, or can't be seen, whereas Flash just does nothing and issues no warning.
Egg
-
Egg,
Thanks for the further explanation. I'll have to find someone with Flash to demo this for me.
If a layer were to be highlighted when an object is selected, how would the active layer be indicated?
-
Richard, maybe this could illustrate to what I was referring.
http://home.neo.rr.com/nikko/images/...sformTools.jpg
Two rectangles were combined into one object, leaving a hole in the center. Selecting the points in the center and using the scale tool allows one to scale the size of the hole, from any point or from the center. The same goes for the Rotate tool, working just like the tools in Xara that can affect the entire object, with a movable center of rotation.
Does that make more sense?
-
Hey that's really cool Dan, I want a tool that does that too!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
