just a doodle I had kick'n around on my drive...boxed out in Wings3d, wire done in C4D, and rendered in Carrara Studio 2 http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Still needs a whole bunch of stuff added for sure.... I really need to study some newer style car lights to throw in this concept racer... some seats, etc etc... yea right... lol
The Virtual Mirror in Wings3d is awesome, and tools like bevel verts really made the lugnuts easy to create... the list goes on http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
So... while Wings3d won't allow one to create poly by poly method of modeling, it really does have a lot of cool tools which truly rock for boxing stuff out... this related to another recent discussion regarding the subject of modeling cars http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

and... just in case there is anybody who wishes to better understand just how quick and easy the workflow in Wings3d can be using the Virtual Mirror in conjunction with a few custom hotkey assignments.... check this out....
looks like a lot, but actualy... I select one edge, hit L,k,backspace, spacebar... one key after another, very quick like... then select center ngon, hit m... whoila, virtual mirror... and when I am finished I hit n and all is one...
and in this example we started with a whole model... for just starting with a cube... simply select any face, and go right to step 7, hit m ..... hehe, doesn't get much easier than this folks....
I mean when ya get right down to it, this VM is one great tool, no monkeying around moving this or that this way or that way as is the case found with VM's in other apps... nope, very simple, very very fast workflow, and couple this with the rest of the hotkey assignments that I posted here.... , and you are off to the boxmodeling races... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Very cool stuff your doing Gidgit. Your car model is pretty slick, I like it. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
-
Hi Gidgit.
Your car looks very nice .
I've found the solution to my earlier question "edge slide" this is how it's done:
1) Draw a cube
2) Select the edges of a face
3) Press shift+L
4) Evoque menu with RMB and select bump command
5) Now we've created a new edgeloop
6) Instead of confirming the command (bump) just press + or - to position the new edge loop.
7) do the same for others edges to get the desired result.
Now on smoothing this will produce nice chanfered edges wich I think it's very usefull to take the models to other programs.
Another question: On a tipical car project and working the entire car body in one piece how can you open the wheels holes in the final without messing to much with the car body?
And another: Wich version of Wings to use? This last one 0.98 16b freezes in my computer when applying virtual mirror

Hi Gidgit,
Great looking car! Wings3D is a lot easier to use than ZB. Have you imported a Wings .obj into ZB to see how well it works?
-
Sokili,
Wings 3d objects exported as .obj work very well in ZBrush and they work very well in Silo too.
kindly,
ivan

Thanks Mike... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif It's a pretty decent example of just how handy ngons can be in an app, and how an app capable of supporting ngons could/should work with em... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Emel... haha, I never even thought of "bump"... but you still have to reposition them loops... I lost you regarding the selection of all the face edges, as when you hit shift/l it simply changes the selection back to the face, which is what I originaly did to select the edges... select face and hit "e"... coverted the selection from f to e, then upon shift/l I am right back to where I started... hehe musical faces http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I think you will find the method I suggested as to being the most accurate for making those chanfers exactly the same size...in the manner of your example you posted that is...
For just plain chamfered edges, the suggestion made by Mike... just hit an edge, and ctrl/a, or if in face mode just ctrl/a to select all then hit e... and then do a bevel.... is the quickest way to chamfer out something... though you do get those corner tri"s eh... so you right click while all you edges are still selected, choose hardness>hard, hit f to convert to face mode, and hit "s" to smooth... notice becuase all the perimeter edges were defined hard, that the cube remains in shape, just divided into a couple of more segments is all, and more importantly, the chamfer corner tri's are now quads... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Hi Bill... thanks http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif ... yes, I have tried the import .obj into ZB a few times lol... still need to wrap my feeble brain around some of the finer nuances of the whole procedure is all... and yes, Wings3d is pretty durn easy to model with... I look forward to more of some ZBrush worx from you guys... maybe I can pick up a few tips from yas http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Emel... the wheel wells were factored in during the very earliest stages of boxing this car out...
once you have em as shown here, you can always select the inside well edges cut and connect and extrude to hollow things out more etc...
btw, I am using version .98.22

... out to finally shaping things some...
I mean you would do things slightly different if you were following a pic of a specific car for sure, but the having influence extrudes on each side of the wheel well areas, as well as an influence extrude along back x side would still be the same approach, just the positioning of the wheel wells, doors etc would be different is all...
but this here racer is just imagination... so we were much more free in how the design was approached http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
-
on and on it goes folks... just box the shape out moving around those faces and edges until you get the overall base shape just right in that boxy looking state...
then you can either select the whole thing and subdivide( see post below for info to keep some lines sharp ) , or, as I usualy do, you can select some horizontal and/or vertical edges, hit "g" to select edge ring, and then hit "c" to divide and connect said ring, or hit any number, and then "c" to divide into specific amounts...
So... have some fun and box out a car folks... use this design if you want, or better yet, come up with your own cool design http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
and btw, ya know what, setting up those hotkeys... might seem to be a bit of work at first, but I reiterate, once set up, you will find that modeling with them is very easy, and much more intuitive than working with the slide out menu's...
I mean you can still use the menu's when you wish, but I can tell you that for moving those f/e/v's around, and for extruding same, and scaling... using those F keys is really natural... the left key in each F key bunch is op>normal... and then op > x/y/z for the other three keys on the right of each bunch... your eyes, hands, will soon find this a quick and easy way to interact http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif anyways, all up to you http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
happy modeling http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

and.... here's a slightly altered version of this same original boxed out shape from above... altered in Silo...just for you Ivan http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
but yea, now you can see different design possibilities stemming just from one very cubular approach... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif move things around and this could become a ferrari, or pantera or lotus or lambordini or... what's your choice ?
you will notice the bottm edge all around the whole car is sharp even when subd'ed... this whole edge was selected and defined as "creased" in Silo, so that it would not round out... this would be defined as edge>harness>hard within Wings3d... you could do a slight bevel on this edge later on to round it out just slightly, or... on and on it goes... the power is in your minds and hands, to make this very simple box form into your specific dream car... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
and finally... hehe... I would imagine that this boxed out shape could be done in most any app such as Silo, C4D, Maya http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif etc, and the only part that would be different is in how the VM is set up,how welding or merging the two halves is approached.... and the hotkey's etc...,is all... but yea, just extrude and move those poly's ... in which ever app http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Have fun http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

and... just to take the original box form shown in the wheel well example several post's above here a few steps in a different direction... out of this form you can create all sorts of neat stuff... do a few extra cut and connects here and there, move some stuff around here and there, and whoila... a new car wip... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Yea yea, it still needs a ton of work... as usual... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif ...
Anyways... there ya have it... just create the original rectangular box form, and work it around some...
and if you have never modeled a car in 3D before, whatcha waiting for... it doesn't have to be an exact science ya know... it is supposed to be fun is all http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
come on, model a car... any car... real looking or just a funny cartoon like buggy... I know you can http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
oh, and before I forget, another couple of tips to make modeling easier on you... some of you know these, while others new to Wings3d may not...
'if you ever get your self into a spot whereby you can't seem to get to the spot you wish to work on... in Wings3d just hightlight/select a vert.edge or face in that general vacinity, and hit"a" for aim, and this will allow you to now scroll zoom to that area...'
and if you feel like just free moving a vert/edge or face around, just hit "t" for tweak mode, and select holding down the lmb, and without letting the lmb go, just move a selected part around... to exit "tweak mode" just right click... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif be sure to be in VM mode before tweaking, or else the tweak will only affect one side... unless of cource you are modeling in some dents or something, in which case, tweak on... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

gidge---
liked the rendering from carrara. ever try vue d'esprit?
thumbs up, all three of them,
Gare

Yea Mike... a Bug indeed, though as ever, far from finished http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Hi Gare... thanks... yes, I tried Vue a few times, and found that though it was pretty straight forward, and produced very nice results, it also was a tad too resource hungry for my little machine http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
