This month is L
Attachment 103643 Attachment 103644 Attachment 103645
Hi Larry, thanks for this month's challenge.
Of all the letters, I find I, J and L are the least interesting. So I was looking for a distinctive L to use this month. Attached is The Upper Case L from Nick's Fonts - Speedball No2 NF Bold.
Despite the appearance of this drop cap, the result is pure vector. Not one pixel in the .xar file. What seem to be gradient fills are in fact inner contours with 500 steps, which create this metallic texture. If you were to copy the graphic into Illustrator, it would still be a bunch of vector shapes, which would not be the case if you were using gradient fills. (not that a gradient fill could follow the shape of the L in any case - or indeed the rounded rectangular frame) This is why the Contour tool is my favourite in the Xara toolbox, it's versatile, flexible and adaptable. This isn't the case in some other vector programs - how are contours working out for you guys using Serif DrawPlus?
Bob.
Webby has got me into cubes recently, so here's mine.
I like those Bob and Egg. Cool and possibly rusty I-beams Egg.
I know Webby is a regular on XU, but does he ever visit and contribute to TG? If he needs an invitation please do.
Hi
"L" is my wife's name initial letter, I've "embroidered" this for her

Pretty cool maxcon62. Just curious bow did you got that crochet look? Who knows, I may want to do that sometime.
First, I've observed carefully some crochets ;).
I've drawn the "L" with "shape tool". then I've created the holes with "Eraser tool" ... it has been a long work
I'm going to show you the vector draw

Finally, I've applied a Canvas texture (from the "fabric" library), I've used Transparency function modifying the "Transparency profile" (I've followed an Angelize tutorial on "Distressed Text")
That's all.
Max
Very nice job, I admire your patience.
Bob.
Another contour drop cap, this time using the Storybook font, plus the Lots of Frames font for the frame.
I also used a grungy texture, to which I gave a fractal plasma transparency to get the aged effect.
Bob.
Thank you Max. You sure did a lot of work to do that, but the end result is awesome. My hat is off to you. For anyone reading this, it shows that it's not always as easy as pushing a button and expecting the software to do it for you. What it does show is having an idea and the determination to make it happen. Well done Max. =D>=D>
Bob what ever you did to make this such a superb Drop Cap was awe inspiring. Well done Bob.
EDIT: I really like what you did.
Thanks Larry for your kind words, they make me very proud and incite me me to go on and improve myself.
I share your thoughts, many people think that it's easy to create graphics by computer, but the creativity is own of man, computers help only to process data.
I'm one of Magix.info moderators (the official forum of Magix), and every day I "fight" ;) with persons that only want to click on a button to create a film.

Here's another.
Very nice Egg, thank you.
Here are 3 more. One is a rehash of a previous one.

Particularly like the middle one Larry.
Thanks guys.
Here's my three to add to the bunch.
First one is "Snap ITC" font.
Blue one is "darling" font.
Third (striped) one is "real tec".
Thank you for taking a look.
All fine examples coldwetnoz. I personally like the first one best.
My "L" Drop Cap especially for kids :D

Very cool Igor. Kids love those blocks. Which ones did you render, lego blocks or lego duplo blocks. Not that it makes any difference really, just wondering.
The skELeton ;)

That is a lovely piece of work. Great crochet effect.
Thanks. I am sending my mess on screen - how I worked this Drop Cap
Attachment 103778
One rectangular, one square, small circles, text LEGO and 3d tool for shapes some lights and gradients.
One more Drop Cap L

@ larry
It's a good idea ... I'm going to try
@ Igor
Your works always surprise me
Just finished this one, although I could work on it for hours yet and change the scroll work more. Even when I think I'm finished when I post I always see places and intersections I don't like.

I almost ]fixed at least part of what was bothering me.

Hi Larry, I think it' s a really graceful "L" ! ;)
Max
With regard to the "Piano Keys" I have imagined the "L" as a "Grand Piano"...
like this...

Hi Max,
Love that Drop Cap. It immeadiately reminded me of a much loved & missed British comedian Les Dawson, one of who's talents was tho play piano very badly (of course he could play extremely well) So I've modified your Cap as a tribute to Les.
I like it MAX, But, i feel that the inclusion of the figure unnecessary. My fist impression on seeing the thumbnail was wihat are those angled shapes. I understood looking at the larger view. Which makes me wonder if I was all wet with my idea of piano keys because when reduced to a usable size for use as a Drop Cap the piano keys would mostly be lost. Was a valiant effort on your part. Sorry if I rained on your parade. Anyway I'm sure some of mine might suffer when reduced, i was just thinking, what if the keyboard was moved up, the height increased, and fewer keys? Or something like that. Just throwing out ideas.
Interesting Drop Cap Egg. Seeing this makes me wonder if I was all wet in my comments to Max. I don't think so but it made me wonder.
Lots of really great Drop Caps this month. I was tempted to do another raster based image this time, but I do prefer working with just vectors.
So this is a simple embossed design, using the font Funkydori by Laura Worthington (free for personal use). I added a noise texture from Filter Forge,
which I vectorized using Vector Magic, with a flat contrast transparency.
Bob.
