Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Version 3.2 of Xara Xtreme and Xara Xtreme Pro are now available for download and purchase from our website!
You can find an overview of What's New in 3.2 on our website here:
http://www.xara.com/products/xtreme/whatsnew.asp
but you can also download full release notes with the trials from here:
http://www.xara.com/downloads/xtreme/
(72 pages for Xtreme 3.2 and 18 pages for Xtreme Pro).
Prices:
The Xara Xtreme 3.2 upgrade is priced at $49 with an introductory offer price of $39
The Xara Xtreme Pro upgrade price is $59 with an introductory offer of $49
(plus VAT and shipping where relevant, intro offer lasts 4 weeks and ends 6 July. If you purchased Xtreme or Xtreme Pro in the last 6 weeks then upgrades are free, there's only the cost of shipping).
Upgrading:
Please review the features and improvements, try the new versions, and then decide whether the upgrade is for you. The upgrade for Xtreme owners is more substantial because it's been longer since the last version (2.0). For Xtreme Pro users this is a smaller upgrade (from version 3.0 to 3.2) and some may decide not to upgrade and wait for the next update. However for regular users of Pro we think that you should find some of the improvements worth the upgrade price (e.g. even minor points such as being able to resize rounded rectangles and keep the round corners, or the new improved zoom, or integration with external photo editors, make a substantial difference to the usability and workflow).
And compared to the recent upgrade of Adobe Illustrator (equivalent of $300 in the UK, more than the full retail price of Pro!) we feel the price is easily justifiable.
WARNING for PRO 3.0 users
You can download a trial of the new version, but this will install over your existing version without asking you. If you later decide not to upgrade then you will need to un-install 3.2 and re-install version 3.0 from your CD.
Regards,
The Xara Team

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Woot!!! Nice upgrades :)
The right click copy is worth its weight in gold.
Haven't had time to like other features.
Question though:
I now can export Flash Animations in Xara Xtreme (not Pro)
Is this a surprise? Yay! tytytytyty

Scratch that. Wrong download. Not firing on all cylinders today. Down with cold...

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Did you press trial instead of unlock?

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Wow. This is pretty cool.
"If you've ever drawn a line and then clicked a color and wondered why the line color didn't change, then you'll appreciate the new smart object coloring. Xtreme not detects whether the shape is open or closed and a left click will now set the line and fill color of an open path (i.e of an unfilled shape)."
I hope that there is a discount for those of us who already have X3D6. I think that $49 is a great price for the extra functionality of X3D, but if you already have it...not so much.
I'm installing the trial now. I guess I'll see soon.
Eric
I just checked...no discount for owners of X3D6...bummer.

It's great and all that X3D6 is now included-nice bonus. But for us loyal Xara users that paid seperately for X3D6, it would be a nice show of faith to give some discount, even a token discount.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
I recommend going for the upgrade from your current version of Xara Xtreme or Pro or previous version and see what the discount is calculated for you.
You can always cancel the purchase if you decide the upgrade price is more than you want to pay.

Perhaps it's a good idea to offer a "naked" Xara Xtreme Pro upgrade - I don't need such a software like Xara 3D or MAGIX foto clinic.

Ah-so you're saying there is a discount for users like me who own BOTH XXPro and f Xara3D? Sure would have been useful if they had made that clear in the 'prices' section of the announcement.
EDIT:No mention here:
http://xara.com/products/xtreme/upgrade.asp
of a discount for users like me who own both Xara Xtreme Pro ***AND*** Xara3D. What do I need another copy of X3D for?

Agreed. I have xara3D6 already.
And I don't need magix foto clinic as far as I can see - I have pixel editors and painters aplenty.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Yes I know an extra X3D is a waste for some of us (I think I may pass some of my spares onto friends!) but we are talking about $64 (with postage etc), so they might drop $10 off. For those of us who use XPro some or all of the time professionally, the tweaks will save most of us at least an hour a month so that will pay. And for the others, either don't upgrade or regard it as a charitable donation which keeps Xara interested in upgrading our favourite software.

Ah! I have seen nothing I don't like yet in Xara Xtreme 3.2! I'm still digging in the candy dish of the king of vector arts. Lime anyone? :D

A department manager where I work sends out a quote for the day every morning. The one he sent today seems to be appropriate :)

That is not to say you cannot identify a problem. The attitude that is projected when you make the problem known determines if it is a compaint or a helpful notification.

Yeah, I would go to the manager and make very clear not
to send me any quotes of the day anymore. Unless he/she
gives an opt out option. ;) (man, that would
be the pits, your manager as a spammer. ;))

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
So Do I have Until July 6th to upgrade ? I think that is what I read , I might be able to afford it by then .
I have downloaded the upgrade and I will try it out.

I don't agree with this quote. Just because you can not change something does not mean that it is right. And this does not mean that your attitude is wrong. Sure no one wants to hear constant complaining.
But if no one ever complained many things would never change. Sounds like a manager.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Fortunately for me, he is not my manager. My manager is about 200 miles away in another city and I only hear from him once a week on a 30 minute conference call with all the other network administrators :)
So far I like the new version and am getting comfortable using the few changes to how the previous versions operate.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Congrats Xara on the new version :)
I'll have to check it out to see if it's worth purchasing. The pro version offers some nice stuff too

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
This page contains mainly the new features in this release.
Have there been other bugfixes except for the ones reported on that page? I don't think the release notes (.pdf) contained much more than this and I had expected more of a "full report" in there; as the above page says: "And many other miscellaneous improvements including...." so I figured there's more :)

I am one who also has 3D6 I do not need another and it is rarely used.
The demo version does not have foto clinic and that is the one of the reasons to get the upgrade, why did they miss that out as it is part of the whole package?
So what pixel editors and painters would you suggest?

I have set mine to c:\windows\notepad.exe: it loads instantaneously and can be closed immediately when you accidentally double click a photo and the blasted bitmap editor opens up.
Please let us have a "No editor" in the next version, or allow the double click / Return option to be turned off. It's worse now than it was before because it takes effect on bitmap filled shapes as well as bitmaps.

Why indeed.
I don't think it is Magix policy to give free demos on their software - such faith they have. :D
As for which to get - what do you want to do with them? :)

It is interesting when they offer a free trial and then leave out part of the package.
How can one appraise what is for sale when you cannot see what is being sold.
Like taking a car for a test drive and being told you cannot see the dashboard until you buy it.
Just a bit more than the photo editor does, do not need Photoshop, perhaps have to get my head around Gimp.

Not sure gimp will work as xara external editor on windows. Quick test shows it will open when double clicking in xara, but a question mark over whether it will save back correctly.
That said gimp is a very good editor indeed and can always use .png to transfer.
I use photoshop elements a lot - even though mine is version 2 it still does most of what I currently need [channel splitting being an exception].
-
Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
The release notes say "This feature has been tested with Adobe Photoshop CS, Corel Paintshop Pro X and Gimp".
From the description of the feature, what's happening with stuff other than XPE (and probably Magix) is when it edits, it saves the jpeg to disk for editing, then invokes your editor, and watches to see when the file changes to automatically bring it in again.
In fact I recall mention that in order to support this the image is converted to a PNG if it's a jpeg, so that it doesn't suffer generation loss, with the side effect that it can make your Xar file tons bigger if you use a lot of large jpegs.
My assumption would be that this would work with anything that's capable of working with a PNG file.
-
Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Hi Odat
Yep I read the release - that's why I said question mark because it apparently should, but for me it didn't when I did a test.
Using the long suffering xara cat clipart - exported to gimp 2.2.14 removed background with transparency/color to alpha, and saved - but it didn't load back into xara.
May be a path thing but I have it installed as windows default [+ gimp gap, with GTK 2.10.6-1].
Seems to work fine with PSE2 and PS6.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Oh my, the new Update brings Albacore problems with PDF import, the PDF export isn't compatible with Corel Draw, there is this ominously layer bug, the progress bar error isn't repaired, the SVG export is not complete and SVG import isn't available in the year 2007, I don't see necessary improvements to the text tool, the text antialiasing problem isn't addressed, named colors aren't automatically added to the color bar, and all in all there are no new vector features available (no, I wouldn't talk about the missing scripting functionalities, because it seems to be utopian to expect such a thing from Xara).
All in all I'm really willing to support the further development of Xara Xtreme Pro. But I'm not willing to support these strategies to sold $49,- updates and increase the price tag for Xara Xtreme Pro from $199,- to $249,- and try to argue this with a bundle of (in my eyes) not so professional tools like Xara 3D there and another old MAGIX tool there. And that means, that I'm not willing to invest money in such kind of "progress".
I need a professional product with new vector tools and some of the discussed new feature ideas in this forum.
I will wait for the next upgrade/update, in order to see whether the Xara developers are really listen to the needs of their professional users and their tons of suggestions for a better Xara Xtreme Pro - postead already here in this forum.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
I've decided to miss this update too.
It would appear also that Win 98 SE is no longer supported, so I guess I ought to wait until I get a new computer, and that means waiting for Vista SP1

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Thanks for all the comments (so far!) guys.
Here’s some information relating to several of the points that have come up in this thread:-
- Using Gimp as photo editor. This should work. Try changing the file format that’s used to transfer images to and from bitmap editors (Effects & Plug-ins tab of the options dialog). Try selecting png if you’re introducing transparency into an image that doesn’t already have some. See the “Effects & Plug-ins tab” help page for an explanation of the different bitmap transfer options. If you still have problems, please submit details of the Gimp version, example bitmap, etc.
- Win 98 SE support. We’ve officially dropped support for W98, but that’s only really because we no longer test on that platform. It will probably work fine, so try the trial version.
- Trial does not include Magix photo editor. This is only because Magix don’t yet have a time limited trial version of their editor that we could include. And because we include the very latest 2007 version (not an old version as implied by someone in this thread above), we couldn’t just give it away for free with the trial.
- Regarding Remi’s list of problems. The “ominous layer bug” seems only to be a problem with the photos in the downloadable clipart. We’ll fix that soon. You also say “named colors aren't automatically added to the color bar”. Can you explain that comment please? Named colors are no longer created implicitly by 3.2 as they were in older versions (they should never be), but when you create a named color explicitly it appears on the color bar, just as always.
- To ugrade or not to upgrade. As I mentioned in the announcement at the start of this thread, 3.2 is only a point upgrade for Pro users because 3.0 is only a few months old. So some owners may not want to upgrade. But because we’ve made so many general improvements while preparing the release of the new consumer product “MAGIX Xtreme Photo & Graphic Designer”, we wanted to make those improvements available to Pro users as well as Xtreme users now, along with the new filters that have been developed such as XPS and SVG export. There is quite a list of improvements and we expect that many Pro owners will want to have the best version of the program that's available, and that's now definately 3.2.
Thanks
Neil

Neil,
What improvements have been made to PDF import/export. The comment by Charles Moir in the thread below implies there were some.
Thx,

And I'm happy to see that Xtreme is alive and well...

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Hi Neil,
I'm a little bit confused:

Perhaps I don't understand the difference between the old and the new functionality. Found also this text on your "What's new in Xara Xtreme" page:
"In older versions of Xara Xtreme, a new Named Color was created and added to the color line whenever you created a new color. This typically resulted in dozens of Named Colors appearing in the line, even though most of them weren't actually used. This no longer happens. When you create any color (e.g. click one of the Standard Palette colors) it just applies that as a local color to the object. You can of course edit this color using the Color Editor as always (Ctrl+E). Only if you select the 'New Named Color' icon in the color editor is a new Named Color created."
I'm not sure what you mean with "create a new color" together with that this color shows on the color bar? I mean, if I create a shape, select the color editor and choose a color for this shape, this new color is already handled as a local color to the object in Xara Xtreme Pro 3.0.2.781. Only when I choose to create a new "named color", the color bar shows the new named color. If I understand this right, you're saying, this behaviour is not changed. But then I don't understand, what's the difference between 3.0 and 3.2 with this?

but I am not sure what I have upgraded to, I will find out eventually.;)

Do you receive Magix Photo Editor when you purchase 3.2 or do you have to wait for the CD?

That text from the web site is a little confusing, so I'll get it changed.
In 2.0 or 3.0, start a new design, draw a rectangle and make it red by clicking on a palette color (one of the diamonds). You'll see a new 'named' color square appear on the color bar. That is not a very useful named color, because it's name is something like "RGB(100%,0,0)". As a result, load many old designs (into 2.0 or 3.0) and the color line is a mass of different named colors like these, and with names like "White 2" and "Black 3". Often somewhere amongst them are some useful named colors that the designer has explicitly given names to, like "Car color", or "Theme color 1". But finding them amongst the useless named colors is not always easy.
So now in 3.2 when you select a shape and click a palette color to change it's color, no named colors are implicitly created. So no new color blobs appear on the color line. But of course you can still create a named color for your "Car color" using the button provided in the color editor. And then that color does appear on the color line, because it's clearly an important named color.
The result is that designs created in 3.2 have on the color bar only named colors that were explicitly created by the designer. Plus of course whatever palette colors are turned on in the color gallery.
A related change in 3.2 to help with this problem in old designs, is the option to not save/load any unused named colors in the design (on by default - see View tab of options dialog).
And 3.2 also shows linked named colors with a smaller color square than the master named colors they are linked to. See web site description for more details on this.
All these changes are intended to result in a less cluttered, clearer color bar.
PDF - I'm pulling together a summary of the changes to PDF import/export made for 3.2. That will appear in the "New Pro PDF ..." thread.
Thanks
Neil

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
Thank you, Neil. Now I understand and it's a good solution with the new update. So, please forget my previous comment about named colors.

Thought I would update a confirmation on using Paint Shop Pro as the bitmap/photo editor for Xara Xtreme. It has been stated that version X of PSP works and I will now add that version XI (eleven) works as well.
Which is good news for both Xara and those who own Paint Shop Pro Photo XI.
Here's the pic. Clip art from Xara Xtreme 3.2 gallery.

Re: Xtreme Pro 3.2 & Xtreme 3.2 Released!
I bought the Pro upgrade and I am glad I did. Not major new tools, but fine tweaks on stuff I use all the time. :)
It is like your desk chair when you are busy as heck, you would never be able to tell what your chair looks like but you would definetly miss it if it was gone...
