We have an idea going over in the Xara Gallery about posting a forum-wide challenge of a symbol of renewal--the mythological phoenix--the idea is to create one with your program of choice in any style or version which you like. It would be so cool to see all the different varieties and versions people can use their imagination and come up with. It translates well into logo and abstract techniques--anything goes. There is already a posting in the Gallery and one in the Xara Gallery (info on the symbolism, origin, etc. can be found on pg 2 of the "Brandon Lee" thread in the Xara Gallery if anyone is interested).
Time to show off your favorite program.

But I may not get to participate so here is one done by hand, almost all the way, had a tad of XaraX in there, so I guess it qualifies....
The image for those not familiar with Marvel comics Group is a pic I did of the Dark Phoenix from the X-Men comic.
Marvel Girl in her first incarnation, a telekinetic "marvel" in the X-Men. Then she was the giver of life in her second incarnation as the "Phoenix" and then the taker of life as the "Dark Phoenix". Jean Grey is now just Jean Grey again in the comics world, not the Dark Phoenix, Phoenix or Marvel Girl. She's a very interesting character that I love to read about her adventures every month.
Enjoy

Done entirely in Xara X. I may try one in Photoshop to see how well I can do in my "native" software.

::edit:: oops, guess I havent figured out the correct way to attach an image
::edit 2:: Well I tried to edit my post , but cant see an option for making the image appear in the thread as opposed to just being a downloadble attachment ? Humble apologies to the regulars. If a mod can/wants to do the honours, please feel free
Nice work by everyone btw and thanks Maya

your phoenix is such a fun one and I love the feathers and effects---it would be great if you'd like to add the image as a regular attachment so it will be immediately viewable with the others! Your phoenix has a lot of personality and made me smile !!! Thanks for sharing it!!!

P.S. If you haven't already discovered the way to attach your file...right after you type the text body of the message scroll down a ways till you see the upload attachment box, check it, then go back up to your message and click the "Post" button which then takes you to the next part where you type your title for the piece and then browse to your selected file. After which just click the "Upload Attachment" and after a bit it will tell you it has completed that task.
Go in under edit, scroll down to "Options" and click the underlined "Upload an attachment"...

wow ... some nice posts already
Ramwolf's looks as good here as in the other forum ... nice to see her here too
Dale I like you different interpretation and the colours and forms are nice
Ross has a seriously hot molten look happening there which looks very uncomfortable for the poor bird
vogonpoet ... your's looks like he/she's actually enjoying a warm bath
here's another one I did using the demo for Expressions 2 ( www.creaturehouse.com ) which is a purely vector program I'm trying out. It has awesome line drawing and even some impressive watery line styles. All lines are affected by tablet pressure which is cool.

Thanks Maya!
I have been reading some other threads about image posting and tested a bit in the 'testing' forum, but it seems that maybe my browser is having issue with uploading to this particular forum. No worries, and thanks for your help Sorry for interupting the continuity of this thread.

Another method for posting is this ...
ftp your image to your own webspace (I think most free hosting places like geocities won't allow this to work right). Then go to that in a browser and copy the url
post it here in your message window like this
(img)http://www.talkgraphicspic.com/mypic.jpg(/img)
except don't type the ( or ) but use [ and ] brackets .... I just typed it like that so it would show as text and not try to show the pic

Vogonpoet---was glad to help post it!!! It seems we don't have a moderator for this gallery...so I just did what I could. Maybe one will drop in and tiddy up our posting and get it placed within your post eventually.
Another cool one David!!! That sounds like an interesting vector program...I'll have to go check it out, looks like it can produce some neat effects with painting too .
Stu (Kiwi) over in the 3D forum has also contributed a wonderful phoenix---be sure to see it, I've asked if he would add it here.
Well, great start to the challenge and already it's a pleasure to view thanks to everyone !

too Soquili!!! Boy, the image really brings out fun play with colors too--very vibrant and good contrasts of warm and cool. I like the wing tips design and depth to the body as well. FUN!!! I'm having fun just seeing others ideas and uses of all sorts of programs--very inspiring, and a relaxing way to "play" and just enjoy creating without any pressures. Very nice, Soquili!!! Oh, there's also another new one over in the Photopaint forum by Cheryl--really wonderful and very interesting textures and techniques too, don't miss it!
I just finished goofing around with Painter Classic and then put it in XaraX to see how else I might modify it...will post it next...
Thanks Soquili!

All sorts of images flow into my head and ideas of how to create them in PhotoPaint and XaraX. It's amazing and much appreciated inspiration
I am rating this thread with a resounding 5 stars. It's earned it!!!!

Thought I'd try something that I would usually do in Xara X, and see how it went.
It went slowly! Xara is so fast, and slowing down to use the non-intuitive Illustrator functions is almost painful!
The jpeg compression was better in Illustrator, though. Not so much banding.

Fertile challenge! Here's my Phoenix done entirely in Painter 6, in about 8 layers.
I concentrated on the "rising from the ashes" aspect - when the cataclysm has passed then hope can rise from devastation. The ground was painted on with Soft Charcoal and Photo Brush-Grain variant to make it look more ashy. The flakes of ash thrown up by the beating wings were done with the Pixel Spray airbrush.
The pall of smoke (Digital Airbrush) was remembered from this summer's bushfires, and that led me to put in some gumtree branches.
A Happy Accident occurred - I was going to apply the Burnt Edges plug-in to the edges of the picture but forgot I still had the Bird layer selected, which left me with one well-charred Phoenix - I had to keep it!
So many great images in this thread!

I just got back from town and planting some spring flowers---and here's some more excellent artwork!!!
Dale---I absolutely loved your first phoenix image and this one is really cool too...interesting what the other programs encourage...I have only two (XaraX and PainterClassic with the PhotoshopLE which is a much smaller version of the one people here use, and I've really only used it so far to work on photos), but Illustrator should be an interesting one to use...why not use the best of each program you have. You've done great designs for the phoenix!!!
Maeve---Really a knock out image with the "happy accident" charring! That is how it happens sometimes while just experimenting with techniques and you make discoveries--this added a really interesting burnt edge texture and the ashes are wonderful too!!! I've not seen your work before and am so glad you decided to show us this marvelous creation!
Thanks again Dale and Maeve for contributing your visions!!!
