There used to be a cracker commercial that went something like, "If it sits on a Ritz"...
I used several of the textures in this, but probably nothing would make the design tasty.

New planet discovered, named Otis P (*).
(actually made using Gare's Driftwood texture with the help of an ancient Paintshop Pro 8 for the spherize and illumination effects). The rest was done in XDP 9 with the help of the Glitterato plugin from Flaming Pear.
(*) Named after the Otis P. Driftwood character played by Groucho in the Marx Brothers movie Night at the Opera from 1935.

Thanks Gare! My favorite is Decflor2 in terms of pretty but "Messy but elegant" is also very nice. I love some of the names you gave the tiles and my favorites are "Uncomfortable ice cubes" and "Alien ship hull".

Great image of the dragon Maya so sticking with the theme "Dragons" I came up with this, not used all the fills Gary posted this month but one from Tonal tiling fills. A wee bit late but - Happy New Year to everyone.

Thanks, boy. I hope the names are as appealing as the textures themselves. Honestly, it's hard to think up new names, clever or not, after building over 1,000 different textures over 15 to 20 years!
Show us what you can do with them, eh?
My Best,

Re: New Year's Giveaway -- Xara Xone January 2015
Well, I guess I came to the party a little late. I had to perform brain surgery on Jan 1st in Ethiopia, and forgot my TalkGraphics password, so I couldn't get a message to you folks until the private jet on my way home let me use wireless for ost of the way, except I didn't have a laptop on me, so I used an xBox.
I'm kidding, I've been preoccupied and I wanted to give away the monthly graphics loot close to New Year's as sort of a present.
I am DELIGHTED with what I see. You people have taken entirely different directions with using the textures and it's all beautiful stuff! I feel as though I gave you guys a sow's ear and you're all busy making silk purses!
Here's my whack at making a composition out of the textures. Abstract, but dimensional:

360 degree fun around here and let's see some more! We have 300 hits, but only 7 or 8 people!
Lurkers, come on out and join in the fun, or at least let us know who you are!

I'm late joining in this thread too but better late than never! :) Thanks for these wonderful tiles. I finally had time for a play with them. There are several of the textures in here some are easy to spot some are hidden in the details of the flowers and leaves.
edit: I added a closeup shot to show the textures in the flowers

Really like the new entry's from Francis and Maya, the flowers beautiful and delicate from Francis and the ammonite from Maya-excellent.
This one I used the concrete and rocks tile to make the lunar surface and obtain a blue moon. It's just the romanticism in me ;))

Hi Grace—
I don't know; I think "sin bin" is sort of self-explanatory in US, Australian, and Canadian English; I read stygg's remark sort of like our American, " and I will surely rot in hell for (lying, cheating, voting for fracking in your home state, others).
Ww can like a post by using one of the thumbs up icons available in this configuration of vBulletin, but not inline (only as a post subject icon), however, I've seen people agree to like something by posting just a +1 in the body of the post. Or +5, I think convention goes up to +10, which means of course a lot of people post +100, interpreted as "I agree a shipload with the previous post."
My Best,
Gary

If the light source, stygg, is coming from above and slightly to the left, all the panels facing away from the light source need to be much darker:

In post #16, what many people might not realize is that Maya faithfully duplicated a 3D, LEGO-like sculpture:
Attachment 105602
I think this took a phenomenal amount of patience, inspiration, and oh, I'd say a medium amount of Maya's inestimable talent. :)
What tipped me off, is that I know that a certain Secret Santa sent her the unassembled, extremely expensive toy this past Christmas.
Amazing what you find at Five Below...

Changed a couple of the textures on the blocks and made the right side faces darker. No idea why my reply to csehz posted twice.

Thanks Stygg and good idea, finally it has to be easy to create an ufoman shadow because who knows their real size :) So let's start the game :D

Let's forget titles or verbal explanations of what you've created, stygg. It's a beautiful composition, period. Nice use of contrasting colors, asymmetry, and it would be something I'd be pleased to hand on my wall.
People ask you what it is? You say, "Art."

csehz—
It's a beautiful, very compelling composition, and I don't think anyone should care about your motivation or source unless they're really curious!
That is to say, it stands on its own as a lovely study in reddish colours.
And that, my friend, is good enough for "Art".

That really is a beautiful piece of art. =D>
And I hope you will excuse me for spotting something. :(
The light appears (to me) to be coming from the left, so the shadow should be going to the right.
If I am correct in what I've spotted, and then if you change the shadow, it will look awesome.
Well, it will to me.

Thanks for your kind remarks Gare and Rik and if you think the shadow would look better to the right Rik then one image with shadow to right :D I altered the shadow angle in this one due to the slight incline of the ground to the right.

Re: New Year's Giveaway -- Xara Xone January 2015
Better Stygg. To me at least it appears that the light is coming from behind and to the left, but that is nit picking. I like the way you handled the shadow to follow the lay of the land. Very nice image.

Now, that definitely looks right to me. :-bd
And I really like the way the rock looks - the texture fits perfectly.

My comment and photo post were only intended to show the group how extremely difficult and committed an artist has to be to bring a 3D sculpture accurately into the domain of 2D. You did smashingly, IMO, all within the constraints of the texture collection!

Stygg, I noticed that you sort of petered-out with enthusiasm for your very interesting sculpture/drawing. I noticed something awry with it, only because I'm a jerk and fellow artist. Because you used orthographic perspective (non-converging, parallel perspective lines), it's not immediately evident that the piece looks a lot like one of M.C. Escher's "impossible" optical illusions.
So what I did (unasked for, as usual), is pull a quick model of what I think I'm seeing, and perhaps this can serve as a guide should you decide to try some more, work on lighting, or whatever. Now, if you want shadows, the sculpture has to lie on a plane, and if it does, it needs to be lit from more than one light source, or the right side will all be in shadow, so I added a minor area light, they're called.
