[TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Using the <iframe> html tag in a placeholder it's quite straight forward to create a page that can re use a placeholder to display selectable resources.
Here I've show how to I've re used a placeholder to play a selection of embedded YouTube videos at any size.

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
And you can use placeholders with <iframe> on the popup layers. ;)
Just a hint, but think about it. :D
-
Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Yes that would allow the video window to only appear when a movie is selected.
-
Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
When I do a preview of your reusing single placeholder.web document, I get two error messages: line 2, char 1 is Invalid character; line 1, char 1 Object expected. The videos don't play.

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Can you post a screen shot?
No problems here on Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 beta or XP..

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Funny, when previewing from within WD I receive an error (see image) but exporting it as html and previewing it through a browser doesn't give the error and works correctly.

When viewing it IE7, it doesn't work, but in FF3 it does work. Funny stuff, web browsers...

Try running WUD (Windows updates) and rebooting your PC.
I have no such error message showing here in the WD preview, nor even with IE8 rc1.
Plays fine.

Sorry Sledger, should have made it a bit clearer. I have no problem running your example, it's the one on my site that's giving the problems. I'll attach it here.

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
OK - looked at, previewed in WD, exported then viewed in all browsers. No problems here, no IE error messages in the preview or in any browser And working fine in Windows 7 ;)
Looks like a local problem possibly caused by an IE add-on?
Try disabling them.
Tools->Options->programs->manage addons
Disable one at a time until you find the culprit?

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Navagate to the YouTube page, then click on the first black square under the large one, see if an error pops up then.
-
Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Yes I did that, tested all of them. No problems

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Still having problems, sledger. I even reinstalled IE7 (7.0.5730.13) and, as you suggested, disabled the add-ins, all of them. :(
I could just shrug, saying that this is only one set of code that doesn't work. But since you believe it has to do with IE, this is a problem because whenever I want to preview another web page in XWD and I get an error, I will not know whether the problem is caused by faulty code or by IE.
So, it's kind of important to find the culprit. I hope you have another suggestion. Thanks. :)

Well the <iframe> placeholder code works fine, but not on your PC. Why that is I can't tell because I can't repeat the problem here on any of my systems, so clearly the problem is caused by some other mishandling.
Your two screenshots show javascript errors (invalid character or object expected) which isn't part of the <iframe> placeholder code or the full screen YouTube URL (link) in the .web file.
nickydudes shows the same javascript error.
It might be the way your IE is handling the loading of the YouTube video, as you say - it works for you in FF, so clearly not a WD problem.

Is the in built preview using IE as a base?

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Ok.
Also, instead of making a new thread (which I can if you want :D) I have my page setup as 790 width but when viewing it at 800 x 600 the site is slightly wider than the browser and you have to scroll a little to the right. Does this happen to anyone else?

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Do you have an extra toolbar installed?
This will make your viewport smaller, hence the scrollbar
I use firefox with a webdevelopment-bar( http://chrispederick.com/work/web-developer/ )that shows the exact size of your viewport and you can try to accommodate to it
But you'll never know exact what your viewers will be using,like;
-extra toolbar like google
-panels open(history,favorites,rss)
-or even changed resolution for larger display

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
I've downloaded the webdev toolbar and still it seems wider than 800. I have nothing either side. See attached image.

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Your page is longer than 600pixels, so the browser needs to place a vertical scroll bar. The vertical scroll bar uses some of the 800pixel window space for itself, therefore a horizontal scroll bar is created to allow you to see the content that is hidden by the vertical scroll bar :)
You must account for this when creating a page which is longer than the vertical resolution of any monitor.

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
My toolbar showed 792pix width when resized to 800x600
This is with scroll bar included,so it must be about 20pix less.
** Steve, you beat me to the punch again:D

Clearly, the problem is with the installation/settings of my IE because when I change user account the YouTube links are working fine. I completely uninstalled IE7 and reinstalled & updated it, I emptied IE's cache, and I followed all other directions given in your Microsoft Tech link. But to no avail.
So, I have not been able to find the problem, but I want to thank you for all your help anyhow. Thanks!

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
I also get an error message as Boy did. I get the same error when using FrontPage's (ver. 2002) preview tab if I have a site with a Xara Webstyle Nav Bar. Vista 64bit Home Premium, all updated. In FrontPage, the Nav Bar isn't visible in either normal tab or preview tab. I gave up trying to correct the problem there. Here's what I see in XWD:

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Very neat, but when I change one of your links to different YouTube video, the new video doesn't fit correctly in the video (placeholder) window.
-
Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Not all YT Vids are wide screen / 720p (16:9 ratio). Many are still the older 4:3 ratio.
You will need to adjust your placeholder to fit those accordingly.
But you will note that YouTube uses a default widescreen player window too, so 4:3 ratio vids to not fill their player windows either.

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
covoxer/sledger,
I've used your examples for multiple YouTube videos successfully on several websites. But I can't get it to work on a popup layer. Can you tell me how it's done? I would like to be able to click a choice of buttons and have a popup layer appear with the associated video on it.
Thanks!

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
No, what I use is this iframe:
<iframe name=videosm src=# scrolling=no frameborder=0 height=100% width=100% bgcolor=#000000>Video Window</iframe>
With a button that links to a YouTube video and opens in the iframe:
http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=_5bFW0cNuyw
Is that possible?

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Jim, for a popup layer with a youtube vid, why not just use the embed code provided by youtube?
See my previous link, this is how I've done this. No need for an iframe for this.

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
sledger,
That's almost (99%) exactly what I was trying to do. I modified it somewhat and I'll send you the link tomorrow after I add it to the page. I was trying to modify what I had used before but it wasn't the embedded data. My current version required a placeholder on the page for the videos to display, this modified version doesn't. Here's what I'm currently doing: http://www.bluewatersportsmansassoci...com/combat.htm
Thanks a bunch!

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
sledger,
I've added the popup tweak and it works great. Here's one link: http://www.bluewatersportsmansassoci...om/handgun.htm
I like the idea of the button to close the popup layer as I've had clients ask me how to close a layer with a calendar etc. on it. They didn't try just clicking somewhere on the page, just got mad because it wouldn't go away! I have another page it will be added to also.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Sledger,
One problem I'm having: the videos stack up on top of each other and only close with the close video button. I'm getting some weird actions on the screen if each button is pushed while the other video is playing. Any suggestions?

Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
Can you attach your .xar/.web Jim?
-
Re: [TIP] How to re use a placeholder
sledger,
No I can't, it's over 15MB. I'm trying a variation of the flv-player-popup, that's where I have the problem. The popup-youtubes-1.xar works OK and I may just go back to that. This page right now has the problem: http://www.bluewatersportsmansassoci...wboyalbum2.htm. Mousing over the buttons after all are clicked causes flashing of the other videos as if it's a mouse-over effect. If you open and close each one it's OK. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Jim
EDIT: Here's what I tried. Button #1 is set to "Link to web address" with this javascript: javascript:my_open('rwvid1a');my_close('rwvid2a'); my_close('rwvid3a'); which only opens one layer and closes the other 2. Other 2 buttons I just switched the open/close around to match what I wanted that button to do. Unfortunately, without a link to a layer, the layer is visible. So I made a tiny transparent link to each layer so it wasn't visible. Sounds sort of a strange way to do what I want but it worked. Thanks sledger for your help. If you have a better suggestion to hide those layers please let me know. I do have one question: how can I make the videos autoplay when each button is clicked instead of having the video come up and then having to click the play button?
Thanks!
