Stop and Post January 2017
I'm filling in for Bob (iamtheblues) this month due to technical difficulties. Thanks Bob for bring back and old favourite!
So what ever you are working on be it a work in progress, just a doodle or maybe something you are experimenting with you are invited to stop and post your work and share with us how you are currently using your Xara software :)
To get the ball rolling here is a little something I doodled

Re: Stop and Post January 2017
The main "doodling" I do is recreating magazine or poster covers. The below are two of a series of six I just finished up. Part of the enjoyment for me is revitalizing old type faces from my archives and achieving a pleasing reproduction.

Re: Stop and Post January 2017
Firstly, thanks to Frances for stepping in this month, big hard drive problems which took longer to sort out than expected, but it's good to be back in the real world again.@Mike, looks like rather more than doodling to me. I can understand the attraction, I tend to do more type-related stuff than anything else.I've been experimenting in Xara to see if I can reproduce the results I get in Illustrator using the Texturino plug-in from Astute Graphics. As Texturino works with .png files, I can use the textures that come with the product within Xara. The results in Xara are encouraging. I wanted to achieve a grunge-like effect with the wood panelling texture, everything was made using the one texture, plus a sort of woodworm-y effect using some halftone dot textures. Adding transparencies is straightforward in both programs, too.Bob.I'll add a graphic when uploading here works.Apologies for the fact that all the text has run together, I don't seem to be able to make the carriage return work.

Re: Stop and Post January 2017

It is something I truly enjoy, Bob. And yep, I tend to be more layout / type oriented.
I think that by replicating layouts I appreciate, it tends to make me more conscious during the design of my own layouts. Here's a couple more from the set I drew.

That's actually pretty nice use of the pac-man font. I almost didn't recognize it at first since it was so out of context. Nice job!
-
Re: Stop and Post January 2017
The font used in Pac-Man is a different, albeit very similar, font (circa 1980).
The font used on the Re-Examine poster is P22 Constructivist Block (circa 1995). And P22 Constructivist Block is similar to the font used on the If You Carry poster which is Baby Teeth designed by Milton Glaser and I think first used in a Bob Dylan poster designed by Glaser (circa 1966).
All good things spawn other good things...

Here's the image I was wittering on about earlier."This site can’t be reachedThe webpage at http://www.talkgraphics.com/newattac...o=manageattach might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address."Still can't upload and still getting this problem with text layout. It works fine for me elsewhere, both online and offline. I seem to be wasting my time here.
-
Re: Stop and Post January 2017
Attempt to upload graphic.Test line spacingand carriage return.Well, that didn't work.@Gary - I followed your instructions, but sadly no dice. Can someone do a tutorial on how to upload graphics here? I seem to be either becoming senile or stupid - or both.Bob.addendum - smilies & links seem to be failing for me as well as all the other stuff.

Re: Stop and Post January 2017
Hi Larry,I've installed a brand new hard drive and computer management tells me all's well, as does Intel Rapid Storage Technology.I can't see why this is happening. The keyboard works fine in applications, all looks well enough as I am typing this, I get the carriage returns and the line spacing in the Quick Reply Box as I type.Bob.

Bob, have you tried a different browser--as well as the switch to the different uploader?
Also, I was on a forum once that in order to obtain a paragraph break I had to hit enter twice for each break. Dunno if that will help. It came down to me using a different keyboard layout in Windows and the code it was using wasn't being recognized as a return on that forum.

Re: Stop and Post January 2017
Hi Mike, I'm typing this from an Opera browser to see if this helps.[Line Space]I'll also try to upload a graphic here:well that hasn't worked either![Line Space]How the hell does one upload graphics here these days?[Line Space]Bob
-
Re: Stop and Post January 2017
The problems persists in Opera and I still can't upload graphics. I'm getting an inferiority complex now. (smiley)
-
Re: Stop and Post January 2017
As regards uploads, have you made the change in the forum preferences that Gary indicated:
https://www.talkgraphics.com/showthr...ts-to-TG-again
Did you try hitting enter twice in a row? If I recall, it was Opera I used back when I had issues. Are you pressing Return on the keyboard proper or on the number pad (if it has one)?

Cheers stygg, latest amendment. Nothing moves fast here :)
I'm pleased with the saw-tooth effect of the shadows created by the bargeboards. Hardly noticibale here but I think it adds depth to the image.
-
Re: Stop and Post January 2017
@ Mike: Yes I've followed Gary's instructions, but no dice.Bob. (line spacing and carriage returns and attachments still not working here).
-
Re: Stop and Post January 2017
Looking good Egg, l like the sawtooth shadow effect you have applied, excellent.

As a working delineator, those are the kind of little effects I always did. I always went the extra mile.
@ Stygg. Good job.
@ Bob, hope you get your problem fixed some how, even if it means reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling everything. Massive pain I know and I wouldn't do it except as a last resort.

It always suprises me Larry how such tiny inclusions can have so large an effect on the overall image. Just like adding a tiny white glint to an eyeball.

Very neat, and very nice perspective. Might I offer a suggestion? I've highlighted one spot among a few that could benefit from a little highlighting.

Done while working on a tutorial about general vector graphics. Just a simple bowl made from a couple of shapes and fun times with gradients.

I agree Ron, The different planes all seem to run together with no real visual separation.

Re: Stop and Post January 2017
Cheers Larry, thanks for the input. The drawing is of a local landmark & unfortunately it's North facing (the right hand side) whilst the East side is shadowed by a neighbouring building and I don't want to 'lie' about the light direction or shadows. However it's a work in progress, most of the colours are named so it's fairly simple to adjust things and I tend to do highlights once an image is almost complete.

"@ Bob, hope you get your problem fixed some how, even if it means reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling everything. Massive pain I know and I wouldn't do it except as a last resort." Thanks Larry, the list of things that don't work for me on TG gets longer. I can no longer post replies with quotes I just get a spinning wait icon. I am not convinced that my hard drive is responsible for what happens to me here at TG. I'm not prepared to format a hard drive based on a hunch that something must be wrong with it when everything I want to do on my PC is working normally, it doesn't make any sense to do that. Bob.

Re: Stop and Post January 2017
It could be a browser cache issue for this site if other sites are working fine. Aside from just forcing a refresh, the cache itself might need deleting. You may be able to use your main browser's tools/options or its developers tools to try it.

Re: Stop and Post January 2017
Thanks, Mike,I have deleted my browser cache and this to test if it has made any difference. [line spacing]I previously tried using the Opera browser instead of my regular Google one, but that made no difference. [line spacing]Bob. [line spacing]Well. that hasn't worked either. (smiley)

Agree with Mike. The 'cloud' effect is particularly impressive. The horse in clouds is very Beatle - Yellow Submaine with shading. Thanks for sharing Fred.
