Our Bowling Association, not unlike all North American Associations, are moving to a SMO (Single Membership Organization. In the past, support organization for Bowling were divided into three (3) separate groups. The ABC (American Bowling Congress), the WIBC (Womens International Bowling Congress) and the YABA (Young American Bowling Alliance). All these organizations generally will be under one single membership organization in the United States.

Our Association, being in Canada, has joined forces with the CTF (Canadian Tenpin Federation) for our service headquarters. Our Local Association will now be one SMO. We'll be known as WECKBA (Windsor Essex Chatham Kent Bowling Association)

We're looking for a new Logo!

It's not someone who stumbled in from the street to post the same thread, as posted on every other forum on the web, for his sometimes make-believe business - and often with an unspecified reward.

I'm sure the moderators, and administrator can figure out a policy when it comes to posts like this.

I must admit I'm rather with Jens on this. It's pittance compared to what a logo would cost, and wrapping it up as a contest makes it look acceptable.

Having said that, we don't have any firm policy on such things like this. I'd need to speak to people like Gary off list. But I don't think we'd want the forum to become a place for competitions every few minutes so that companies can get cheap work (I'll count Xara logos as something a bit different, as you are after all dedicated Xara product users http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif).

But ED, how about more info? Namely is the organisation not-for-profit? What does it do? And why should people want to do the logo for you?

And will give you the author credit on your website?

We'll then make any decision accordingly after ED has replied.

Right idea ... wrong forum. I'm not "offended" by the "competition" because ED has been around awhile ... and I don't believe he is trying to "abuse the priviledge" by offering some remuneration for a winning design. This is a "BOWLING association" ... and those of us who have been involved in the past know how little budget these clubs have to play with. He could have just done the logo himself ... or could have gone to a local designer (I'm sure he knows a few) ... but he didn't. He came to the place where graphics are "fun and appreciated" to involve some "friends" in the process.

Is there any harm in that? I might have done the same thing ... only after hearing the responses here, I'll be sure to keep it to myself in the future ... wouldn't want to "offend" any of the sensitive types around here http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

It's not always about money. Sometimes its fun for some of our non-professional designers to see what they can come up with.

I remember the person who needed the pig rescue logo. Even some of the resident professional designers got involved here and the big winner was one of the non-designers.

So while I agree that $100 US or Canadian is not enough to get me to enter, maybe one of our talented conference members will take a crack at the logo and win some recognition and a little night on the town.

IMO, the Xara organised logo competition was something different. It was call for support from our favourite software developer whom everyone of us would be proud to return at least a little bit of what we earned using their software. Not to forget that we all knew that the logo chosen will used by the company that has the necessary reputation to get the logo used and exposed which is a prize with unidentifiable value. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif That's why so many of us entered the challenge.

However, maybe you have noticed that logo competitions aren't held this way. They are usually anonymous and works are evaluated by the jury. The logo designs aren't exposed to public comparison (at least not before the winner is announced). Also the prizes for the winning logo designs have usually more digits than 3.

I think that challenges of this kind are devaluating forum relationships. Some people here are professionals, some are not and it's clearly visible everytime there is this kind of forum challenge. Therefore I would rather suggest not to offer undignified prizes which professionals find offensive and rather make it prize-free, or make the logo competition go non-public under clear rules, taking few respected forum members as jurors. And the most important thing! You should guarantee that the chosen logo (if there will be any) will be used by the company and that it will not end in "trash".

OklaEd, if look at Jens' and Romans' post (and all in between), I think you will get an idea of some of the reservations some of us might have of posts of this kind.

Ed - Am I correct in understanding that the logo will be for your local WECKBA (Windsor Essex Chatham Kent Bowling Association)and not some national body? I found your initial explanation a little confusing.

Am I also correct in understanding WECKBA covers only ten-pin bowling and that you don't use the balls with the finger holes? (we ain't all bowlers here! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif ) I mention the 'no holes' because that might well be relevant in logo designs.

Besides bowlers and their fancy shoes, is there anything distinctive about the Windsor-Essex-Chatham-Kent area that might influence a logo design?

Here's my perspective as a non-designer in this forum: lighten up, you professionals. If you're offended by the small amount being offered for a small organization such as this, you can simply choose not to participate and let us non-professionals take a crack at it.

Yes.. we are a NON PROFIT voluntary service. The only guy that gets paid is the Association Secretary for doing all the areas and all the leagues sanctioning, awards etc. All the dues money that comes in pretty much most of it goes to the headquarters for membership costs. We get to retain enough to cover expenses. Many of us, not unlike other bowling associations, provide voluntary services and even choose to take money out of our own pockets to help the cause of and to promotion of bowling in our area.

If I was approached by some business to do a logo I too would not be bothered for this kind of fee, so I understand those on this side of the fence.

It's true, I've been here longer than most and have never asked for anything up until now. In fact you'll see my posts have been all associated with helping others out of the willingness to do so. But this has always been a two way street. I've learned a lot here too! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Regarding credit for the Author... Yes indeed and I'd like a picture of the winner to add with the announcement I'll do up. The Board members (me and others) along with our sanctioned membership will make the final choice. I'll be setting up a poll to aid in the selection, elimination, and final choice process.

Good question Ross... Your right on all counts including the stereotype http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif except for one... ten pin bowling DOES use holes. Generally 2 finger holes and one thumb hole

Bowling does suffer from an image problem, we all agree, but we would not want the bad stuff reflected in the logo. Actually over time we've been cleaning up our act. So no beer cans please http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif LOL!

We're located in the most Souther part of Ontario and in Canada for that matter which is the only unique part I can think of. We do have Canadian record holders and most all the top honour score holders are from southern Ontario.

The WECKBA is the most southernly area (next door to Detroit Mich., one of the largest Associations in North America) and does not include Niagara / Toronto / Montreal areas which are all further north.

OH WOW you notice that about me! Thanks indeed. The official ceremonies are in the Fall. In fact I was inducted into the Ontario Provincial HOF in May and less than two months later, made it into our local Association. I also hold a Canadian record for a 278 Triplicate.

Regarding the Rose... you are very observant! I think it has to do with Windsor the fact that our city is know as "the Rose City" most likely due to the downtown Dieppe Park/Gardens. This is an awesome city run park with a wonderfully exquisite display of roses in the spring. It's replanted with lots of other great plants during the rest of the year. Again... I have to emphasize that I really do understand the Pro's here regarding the award being insignificant and I do respect their position for not wanting to participate. If you don't then there are no hard feelings. I hear ya loud and clear.

At the same time I'd really like to see you jump in on this. Think of it as a promotional venture since it's my full intention to expose the winning individual (in a nice way) to the full extent. If this means he/she has a professional business and/or website you're going to get plugged on our website including pictures of you if you wish and links to your website.

$100 bucks Canadian is all our board approved and thus is all I have to offer.

It's up to you but if you have some free time and have nothing better to do then by all means give it your best shot.

I did a logo for 50 Canadian dollars a while ago, and ever since regret doing it for so cheap. We as artists should support each other and not sell ourselves so cheap. Man logo's are expensive. If you want a logo done, please do it if you do not have any portfolio pieces. Or better yet post a posting at Sheridan college for it. Sorry my prices are way above that.

ED has answered the questions fairly about the organisation's status etc. and all seems above board and fair.

So basically, if you don't want to enter, don't. If you do want to enter, gain some recognition and some pocket money then go for it.

ED, if you want to start a new thread feel free. This one has sidetracked. If you do, say so and I'll close this thread.

AntonyF... I'm fine with leaving the thread as is. The guys had came up with some good questions which I hope I've now been answered. They also had some fair criticism and I believe this too was addressed. I have no problem with either viewpoint.

I know Ed started this thing as a 'competition' but I say don't look at it that way. It is just an opportunity to have fun and hopefully help out Ed & his friends. Hopefully they'll get a whole bunch of interesting logo ideas and have a hard time picking something. I also note that this 'contest' is open to anyone - not just us here. Also we don't really know what they're looking for. Committee decisions!!! So please do participate, share your ideas, and you might just win.

Mike, join in the fun. I'm no good at logos, but I like to make an attempt. You never know, your idea may be the one selected.

Key to logo design... K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple Stupid) No fades, bevels. 1 color best, two if need be, three max. think of the most famous logo (Coke) simple two color. Reproduceable in any media...

Mickie's is the closest, so far, to being problem free and he even has a blend in it...

So... back to the drawing board contestants.

ED, there are some goofy anti-aliasing jaggies in there for some reason, which I can be fixed if my humble logo contribution gets the honour.

If my logo does get picked, I would like the prize money raffled amongst all other contributions.

Nice simple design Risto... the drop shadow looks good on screen, but will it work on paper/cloth/tv etc...

I have a few ideas bouncing around in my head on this one, I think I will let them rattle around in there a while longer before I shake one or two loose...

I removed the linear fill on the pin, dropped the number down to one and removed the black text from behind the red/white text.

The ones with a drop shadow is just to give an idea of what the logo could look like if turned 3D/Embossed (or spiffed up on a website...) The black one is to show how it could be used on a fax cover sheet...

Hi everyone...as a former designer of medals, badges, medallions, dies, moulds etc (using Xara, of course!)for many associations and institutions and a lot of bowling associations(mostly lawnbowls)I'd like to put in my two cents. The existing logo that Ed has looks to me as a photo of an actual badge that has been either cast or die struck, with either stove enamel or baked enamel fill...and this is important in the design of a logo for a sporting group. Are they going to have badges cast or a die made for either pins, medals, medallions, badges? If so, Risto's design is right on the money as it would be easy to covert to a die. Maybe WECKBA will only use plastic badges and pins (which is sad to me as nothing feels as good in the hand as metal) then the design can be printed instead of cast or struck, this then allows more artistic freedom with the design. Maybe Ed can reply as to exactly what the logo will be used on?

There was a request for a better image (Ross I believe) of our past logo. This is the best I was able to come up with...

Remember:
Old = WEKCBA as shown below
New = WECKBA

This is a scan off an awards plaque. It's engraved (carved out) of metal and painted up to be mounted on walnut award plaques. Some professional outfit does this for us. I think we have a few sizes we get made up depending on the size and prestige of the award. I'm going to say 3" x 4" is the largest. Bowler of the Year, for example gets one of the larger ones.

Other Awards we have range from crests to rings so the logo get embroderd, stamped on metal and engraved on jewelery.

Besides awards we have all the other stuff we do to support our area's bowlers and our association. We get teashirts done, towles where the logo will appear. We publish a yearbook with everyone's averages appears and the logo is front and center on this book. All letterhead gets this logo too. We run Association Tournaments once a year so this is one example where the logo would be on flyers and others similar hand-outs.

Risto... All opinions are welcome and respected. As mentioned before, I do understand the different view points. People are entitled to their opinion, no matter if it's right or wrong, it's still their opinion and I respect that. We will not go with plastic since we have always used metal in the past. I don't think we will ever go away from the metal.

So I have a question for you now.... We all like the designs with more detail so have you ever seen two versions of the same design? One that is more details used in print and a simplified version of the same design for die casting and such?
